Notwithstanding the rain
which has fallen in such tor
tents during the present
month and which has caus
ed such a set-back to the far
mers. we have reas ms to be
thankful. No cyclones or
windstorms destroyed pro

county; indeed the Fates
dealt much more kindly
with Monroe County than
with many other sections of
this country. So, {after all,
we should be glad.

Placing Party And
Principle Above Self
We are creatures of sel
fishness. Most of our im
pulses are selfish; most of our
actions are selfish and most
of our desires are selfish.
How refreshing then it is to
find public servants who, in
the face of gratuitous snubs
by their colleagues, can
place party abovejself,
The statement of Senator
Tillman that he is not
“brooding” over the fact
that the Democratic Steer
ing Committee of the Senate
“turned him down” fcr the
position to which by length
of service and experience he
was entitled, but was ready
to work for the success of
the Wilson administration is
a lesson that we might all
well take to heart. ’Tis hu
man nature to grieve and
sulk over our wrongs, real or
fancied but that man who
can lay aside his personal
feelings in his desire to see
the success of party or prin
ciple is a patriot indeed ; and
the people of the United
States can but have a higher
regard for Senator Tillman
for the manliness of his ut
terances.
“What puzzles me,” the
senator said, “is how Mar
tin jumped over my head to
become a progressive, and if
he was not progressive
enough to be made chairman
of the caucas why ne should
have been made chairman
of the appropriation com
mittee.”
“But I most earnestly de
sire Wilson’s success as pres
ident, and the realization of
the hopes of the country,
than anything for myself.
Party first, self last!
Both Senator Tillman and
Senator Bacon, tho they have
just cause to be aggrieved
and offended at the action of
certain members of their
party, have seemingly for
gotten their own grievances
in their desire to bring about
the success of the Democra
tic party.
For their devotion to duty
and their placing of party
above self they have risen
immeasurably in the eyes of
the American people.
The Country is proud of
them for Democracy has no
moro valiant servants than
these two.
Rifle Range for
Quitman Guards
The Quitman Guards are
in need of a rille range. They
need one badly. A soldier
without actua 1 experience in
the use of his rille is a poor
soldier indeed: and by not
having a rifle range Company
M. is seriously handicapped
Aside from lowering her
otherwise high record each
year, Company M. cannot- be
efficient as a fighting force
until each of her members
can go upon the rille range
and qualify.
Not only would an ade
quate range serve to stimu
late interest, in the company
but it would put company M.
in a position to be of greater
benefit in the event they
should be called to perform
any service.
As an advertisement to
the town and county Com
pany M. is valuable; as a
protection to the community
and to the State it is of
great service and in the event
of war it will serve as a neu
cleus around which an effi
cient lighting force can be
builded; and what is needed
now more than anything else
is a rille range.
A 600 yard range is abso
lutely {necessary and the
State desires a 1000 yard
range, if it can be obtained.
The range must be reason
able level and must be at
the foot, of hill sufficiently
large and high to stop the
high power steel bullets and
since the Springfield rilles
now in use have a maximum
range of something uver two
miles, the hill must be of
reasonable size.
The company is prepared
to lease a suitable range and
if any of the readers of the
Advertiser has a plat of
ground or knows of one that
would be suitable, the infor
mation would be appreciated
by the Company. The dis
tance from Forsyth must
not be too great.
Keep your eyes open and
help Company M. get a
range. It’s a pressing need
