ANNIVEBSARY CELEBRATION OF
THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG.
General A J. West, representa
tive of the State of Georgia to the
fiftieth anniversary celebration of
of the battle of Gettysburg, has
received hundreds of requisitions
from veterans all over the state
who expect to go to Gettysburg
July 1-4 inclusive.
General West was appointed on
the Gettysburg commission by
Governor Brown and he is supply
ing veterans with information
about arrangements for the affair.
The State of Pennsylvania has
appropriated $250,000 and the
United States government $150,-
Wj to care lor the veterans of the
Union and Confederate armies
while they are encamped, and
General West expects an assem
blage of 250,000 people Railroad
fare is ail that it will cost the
visiting vets.
According to General West:
“Gettysburg wa s founded b y
James Getty m 1780, three years
alter the declaration of indepen
dence. At the time the famous
buttle was fought, it han about 1,-
500 inhabitants, but the popula
tion has increased to more than
5,000. Over 200,000 strangers
visit Gettysburg every year.
The battlefield of Gettysbvrg
covers 25 square miles of ground
Near the ‘Valley of Death’ is lo
cated the monument of the Second
Maryland Regiment, C. S. A ,
the only Confederate regimental
monument on the battlefield,
The Confederate army was led
by General Robert Edward Lee,
and General George G. Meade
commanded the Union army.
More than 500 stately monu
ments, masterpieces of art, have
been erected , I’ ive hundred tab
lets, descriptive of the spots of
historical fume they mark, aie
placed on every side. Over 1,000
markers designate the position ol
various troops.
Five great steel towers for ob
servation purposes have been e
rected at the highest points, giv
ing splendid views of the battle
field. Over 100 miles of magnifi
cent roads have been constructed,
giving easy access to all parts of
battlefield. General Lee’s head
quarters on the Chambersburg
pike, one-half mile west of the
town, is a point of world wide in
terest.
On Confederate Avenue and on
the very spot from which Gener
al L p e reviewed the battle from
the back of his trusty horse, Trav
eler, is being erected a handsome
equestrian statue to General Lee.
In the trunk of a tree which
was recently cut down were found
900 shot and rille balls of various
kinds ami sizes- Houses every
where retain the cld shutters,
punctured with many shot, and
door frames innumeiable retain
the scars of the minnie balls.
Trees with scarred and shattered
trunks, gnarled limbs and twist
ed boughs bear silent evidence to
the awful ram of shot and shell.
The round trip railroad fare
from Atlanta will be less than
twenty dollars.”

IMPROVEMENT ON LEE STREET.
For several days of the past
two weeks, whenever the weather
permitted, the City road gang has
been busily engaged in “knocking
off” the ridge on North Lee Street
in front of the residences of Mr.
T. J. Hardin and Mr. J. A. Floyd.
There has been a big bump in
the road at this place, which has
been nit only unsightly but a
hard pull on stock coming up the
hill.
The property owners along the
street have agreed to sod 1 he slop
ing banks and this, together with
the reducing of the grade of the
road, and will add much to the
appearance of the street.
