Gossip From
Capital City
OVE I SIXTEEN MILLION INCREASE.
April 3, 1913. With all Georgias
wonderful development, this state
still possesses the advantages of
the old “frontier” as compared
with many very crowded and over
populated sections of the country.
The consolidation of Georgia s
tax digest has brought to light at
the capitol some tacts that are
scarcely realizable. The digest
shows that wild lands decreased
nearly a million acres in extent
during last year alone, and na
turely increased materially in
value. Farm lands throughout
Georgia increased both in acreage
and intrinsic value. The advance
in values in Georgia is not limited
however, to farm lands, or to any
special group of interests. It ap
plies also to urban territories.
Town and city property was
valued at two hundred and fifteen
million, six hundred and forty
nine thousand, four hundred and
ten dollars m 1911: in 1912, it
was valued at two hundred and
thirtv-two million one hundred
and seventy-seven thousand, two
hundred and eighty-five dollars.

Look to Your Plumbing.
gYou know what happens in a house
in which tiie plumbing is in poor con
dition —everybody in the house is
liable to contract typhoid or some
other fever. The. digestive organs per
form the same functions in the human
body as the plumbing does for the
house, and they should be kept in first
class condition all the time. If you
have any trouble with your digestion
take Chamberlain’s Tablets and you
are certain to get quick relief. *or

GEORGIA NINTH IN AGRICULTURE.
April 3, 1913. Figures compiled
in the state department of Agri
culture at the Capitol show that
for the year just past, Georgia
was the second southern state and
the 9th state in the union in the
value of agricultural products. .<
But what is still more interest
ing, it is predicted by the state
commissioner that Georgia will
probably move up at least one
more notch when the crops of
1913 are harvested. Tnis state
has a greater area than either Ill
inois or lowa, which rank 2nd
and 3rd among crop producing
states. More intensive farming,
diversification of crops, greater
attention to the raising of meat
animals, and land drainage, will
assure Georgia eventually, it is
stated, of becoming the greatest
agricultural state in the Union.
Georgia is already making great
progress in the right direction,
particularly in crop diversification
and in intensive cultivation.
While Texas has four times as
much area as Georgia, her crops
last year were worth only two and
a half times as much.

SENATOR SMITHU WHEELHORSE.
April 3, 1913. While on his
short visit to his home in Atlanta
Senator Hoke Smith talked to
hundreds of Georgia democrats.
I'here were dozens of them in his
parlor at every hour of the day.
anxious to learn from his lips
what the prospects were for ma
terial reform under the Wilson
administration. They were pro
poundly impressed with Senator
Smith’s hopeful outlook. The
Senator declared that the reports
of dissension in democratic ranks
emanated almost entirely from
sensation mongers, and that unit
ed democracy in both the House
and Senate would stand solidly be
hind President Wilson iu his big
task.
Dispatches from Washington
say that Senator Smith himself is
expected to be a wheel borse in
the democratic administration,
and that he is counted cn to give
as much aid as a leader in the Se
nate as he possibly could have as
a member of the cabinet.
