JOHN M. SLATON,
Governor.
By the Governor:
PHILIP COOK,
Secretary of State.
TO MR. R. B. STEPHENS.
We have noticed y mr letter and
beg to say as w have heretofore
said that we did not raise the taxes
of the Farmers Bank and if you or
any man will go before an officer au
thorized to administer an oath and
swear that we did, we will have the
Grand Jury investigate that oath.
You know that the Farmers Bank
pays taxes to the amount of tit) per
cent of its worth. That is what all
the banks in Monroe county pay.
You are the first one who called our
attention to the fact that the returns
of the Farmers Bank had been
changed from $50,100.00 to $44,-
000.00, so you must know who made
the change. In reply to what you
said when we started to the court
house for you to show us this change
you know that when we got to the
court house and Mr. Holloway said
that he would go up the stairs and
get Mr. Sutton, who was on the
Grand Jury, and while he was gone
you left before be could return. We
do not care to have any further con
troversy with you for you are just
mad with the Farmers Bank and not
us. If you do not like your picture
since “Uncle Jonah” showed it to
you, we are not responsible.
We do not intend to pay any fur
ther attention to your card writing.
You just let someone or yourself
make the affidavit and then we will
have the Grand Jury investigate all.
