If Bryant, & Cos, will rernaiau at home, we would anticipate a brighter fu tore tor he colored race in Greene, Union Point Academy. The first terra of the present year, at this Institution, was closed by a series exercises extending through Thursday and Friday the 4th and sth ir.st. As to the examination we have heard but one opinion, viz : that it was tbormgh and searching and highly creditable to the Principals of the Academy and their pu> pils. The exhibitions and concerts on both nights went off wiih great eclat. A brill ant point in the litirary festival of the oecason, was an address by J, N, Mcllenrv of our little city. I.t was admirably done, was worthy of the gifted epe»kcr and of tne occassion, and was listened to with rapt attention by an admiring and delighted audience. Capt Smith the Pfihelpal of the Academy is a gentleman of fine scholarly attainments a man of untiring energy and a faithful and enthusiastic teacher. Tho’ not Soiithnrn horn, he has won by his gallant sword, on many a battle field in defence of the late so-called Confederacy, a higher right than could he g'ven by the mere accident of bi'tli to be called a Son of the South. Under his charge and that of his cxcelent Associate Principal, T. II Thornton, Esq. so well and so favorably known in our County with the Misses Jackson superintend ing with decided success, the departments of Mnsie, French, Drawing and Painting the Union Point Academy stands forth as an Institution taking rank among the best of its kind in the country. As u' sual, a large and respectable number of peoplo were in attendance. The Exer cises passed off pleasantly, and one felt like old time had been revived. It is truly refreshing in these dal! times when the mind is burdened with tribula tions incident to the present status of affairs, to be present on such an occasion Or. Monday the Sophomore Class dev claimed. The young gentlemen acquit' ted themselves admirably. The Ist prize was awarded to Mr. Albert VV. Foster,of Madison, and the 2nd, to Mr. It. Ligon McYV horter, of Greene, The prizes were delivered by J. 15. Cummins, Esq., of Augusta, with a brief but elegant speech which was UstenecJ to with pro found silence. At 4 o’clock in the evening the crowd reassembled and were highly entertain ed ifith a I'ocrn from the gifted scholar rttid poet, A. R. Watson, Esq., Editor of the Ladies Home.
