Kellogg of Newnan was in our city last week, introducing a patent So* lution which is likely to prove a valuable assistance to housekeepers. This Solution is used for preserving peiishable fruits <md vegetables, and has been aualized by .istinguished physicians and is found to ontain nothing that may de deleteiious to tealh, We have tasted fruit preserved by it .nd are satisfied that it is equally as good i the hist ‘'canned" fruits. Do you know of what ingred'ents tiiat article of food : s composed ? I shad not go into a chem ical analysis of all the elements which go to constitute a biscuit, but will merely suggest what you probably know, that flue >s the principal element in this species of diet. To have good biscuit, good flour is necessary, and in theso degenerate days when white and black pass for the same color in bread, as well ns in morals, politics, and citizenship, good flour is a thing rarely to be met with. Now having great gastronomic weakness, I have made many efforts to ob'nin a good article of flour, and have succeeded ? lam now using a enek manufactured by Col. Steadman, whose magniSrcicnt Mill is near Covington,Ga. And now, Mr. Editor, just say to all ye.ttr numerous readers about Grcensbo-o, and else where, if they want a real, genu’ne siiiete of good, fresh flour, and not a barrel of the Wes tern article ground before the tear, or mixed in with ]>ras, and such other deleciiblc compounds just go to Davis <fe 13ro. of youre’tv, and older a sack of Col. Steadman’s best, and they wMI keep their wives in a good humor, their chil dren happy, and the Ethiopian superinten dent of pots and kettles perfectly serene. Col. Steadman is a rer.omt.-ucttonivt of (be right stamp, lie is a five man all over. lie goes for rcronsfi tiding tiic Flour Mills. Facto ries and dilapidated interest of our noble old State. Such men as Col. Steadman, n-e public benefactors, they deserve and should leceive the encouragement of an npprecbtling pub'ic. S. P. SANFORD. Pen field,July 27 th, 18G7. *‘J nilge not, that ye be not J itdgetl.” I wonder how many there arc that take to heart this command, delivered l,v the living Christ whilst ho sojourns cd on earth. Many profess to fellow his footsteps in eir daily walks through life ; they sit weekly at the feet of his embassadors on earth ; they pray fervently to bo kept from evil; they study with zeal the holy B : dc ; they desire to appear as‘shining l'ghis’ before the world ; they give liberally when charity is asked of them, and go out of their way to clothe and feed the poor ; they take active parts in aiding the ‘Rome Missions’ for the benefit of the heathen across the seas ; they follow out the doctrine of old, of paying out the last tithe ot Anise and Cummin. But, “Alas for the rarity of Christian charily under the sun.”— Os that charity that thinks no evil, that looks with pitying eye when the evil is irrenied able, that seeks to palliate the sin, and lead the sinner back to the “better path.’ How much of it do wc meet with? Alas! little, almost none. It is true, in spile ot its inconsistency, t >at the very ones who profess to wear the signet of Christ upon their fronts, who have felt the itoly waters of baptism upon their brow, are Oitcn the first to strike the blow that shaterts forever the repu tation ol some fellow-being- There is uo evil, they say, in indulging in a 1 i«.- tie pleasant gossip—no evil in assist ing at a sceial anatomy. No evil, Dot a particle. They may be parents themselves, lair young daughters muy stand blushing upou the threshhold of life, and their hearts arc full of proud liepes for their future. No blight must full upou their pure names, no evil tongues sully their snow-white reputa tion. Dear to them as their own life blood arc these young daughters fame. Is there no evil in poisoning another parents’ fenced Is there no evil in the coarse inuendo, tlio doubh entendre tha.t withers up a reputation as surely as the out-spoken word could do ? Is it following out the precept a of the lowly Nazarcnc. to form a social junto ami condemn a follow oreaturc without jadge or jury. I think in this ere is a painful absence of that charity which sußereth much.’ What wid--spread suffering have th c harsh Judgment wrought, 'l'lie suflercr may be inno cent -appearances maj conspire against him—indiscretion may be the strong est and only evidence they can produce. But woe lo the culprit. The poor wretch who felt the folds of the hide ous Sanbeuif* close about him in the days of the inquisition was not more surely doomed, or the offender against the brotherhood of Loyola more cru elly marked, 'lhc poor victim n:ay have youth—life stretching brightly be fore hint—hope wooing him with silver song—perhaps ambition, a natural do-i s.re to win bis way to sonic eminence in the world, but woe to all these as pirations, if the cruel tongue of slander has a-sailed him, his rare gifts of mind or person awaken no pity. They are but incentives to the scathing breath of scandal. Not many weeks since 1 heard a minister touch on this wide spread evil of oil ciilating uncharitable rumors. Fie said, “If it is brought to your door let it lie there, don’t carry it any further.” And in spite of its homely vernacular, I thought his argu ment as strong and wise a one as I ev er heard. He saw the evil in all its cruel enormity, and was zealous enough in tiio cause lie upheld to point it out. It is right that society should uphold virtue and punish vice ; that the evil doer should suffer for his crime. But “circumstantial evidence’ Las done cruel wo! k in its t ; me. It has made C’ uel pitilc-s judges of those who have been commended to love their neighbor as themselves, and to "judge not. lest ye be judged.’ Do they ever |ielurc to themselves their position if the same harsh judgment with which they have stigmatized another, should bclcie’ed at them? Ar; their livesso blameless, actions so pure that they can afford to raise theory against another. Laßochc foncauld, 1 believe, says, “There is something not altogether unpleasant in the inisfoi tune of our best friend.” And though the old Frenchman was a noto rious cynic, I cannot but think he was fight, For women, gentle and lovas ble as they are supposed to be, are of ten in tHe foremost tanks of denuncia tion when the linger of scandal is lev eled at one of their sex. even though that one he a friend or sister. They assist in sending fV rlh the formula which is as arbitiary in its nature as an imperial uka-c could be, in banishing peace forever from the heart of some fellowMjcing. Why should they hesi tate to do it ? It is a matter of slight importance lo them, they aio environ ed with father and brothers who could, should it assail them, nip the rising Lnealh of scandal in its birth. Is ii, nothing to them that a relined and cultivated man or woman is exposed by their idle gossip to the covert sree. s of the vulgar, and the cold avoidance of the worthy. Nothing to them that an existence is tendered hopeless, a la tere blank ro another. Oil 1 then in deed the light of charity must burn very dimly in their hearts, and they must be very cold disciples of him who said, “Judge not that ye be not judged.' e.'a. n. Greensboro, July 21st.
