Maklt Candor.— It is much lets rfiffi
cult to respect these who me candid in their
professions, whatever the, degree of moral
turpitude disclosed, than the sleek culprit
who plots his villany in rm angel’s garb and
attempts to impose on society by the plea ol
innocence. There is a great deal in politics,
as practised by the modern school of would'
be statesmen, which answers to the cbaracs
ter last described, lint language like the
following from the Philadelphia North Amer
iam is plaiD spoken and honest;
“What has happened in Tennessee will
happen in the ten conquered States aa soon
as elections can be held. But shall we let
Maryland aud Kentucky escape the benefits
of the same policy because technically they
did not rebel ? We say no.”
The writer talks in a malter-of fact way
about “conquered States,” and his desire to
include more in the same category is frankly
avowed. There is another class of editors
who are too timid to call things by tboir
light name, and who, we might reasonably
jnfer, are ignorant of the stupendous changes
which, in a few fleeting mouths, have come
over this government. The language of our
Philadelphia contemporary is deeply sugges
tive.—JY. Y. Jour, of Com.
Popular Sovereignty Exemplified. —ln
18GG, the peoplo of Texas had nil election for
Governor which resulted as follows:
Governor—Throckmorton 48,071
“ E. M. IVase 12,051
Pease was the Radical candidate, and the
people intimated that they did not want him
by a vote of four to one. But of what avail is
a vote of the people of a sovereign State ? Tho
choice was not satisfactory to that most impor
tant personage, General Sheridan, known an
f’Philip the Puke of Orleans,” who is now gov*
erning the South-west nfter tho fashion of an
Emperor. By the Puke’s fiat, Mr. Tlirock'
morton is set aside and Peaso substituted in
his stead. This is the glorious popular sov

American llepublio!— Mont. Mail.
A Mountain Kent Asunder. —Tho fol
lowing is an extract of a letter .’by a
young gentleman in Feldkitch, Switzerland,
to bis parents in Liverpool: “Not [far from
here, part of a mountain has set itself in mo
tion, and is sliding down inlo tho valley.-*-*
The inhabitants of the village at its foot are
in gieat consternation at the occurrence.—
Last winter we had much snow and rain, and
the water has trickled down through all the
crevices of the mountain inlo the ground.
It has undermined tho foundation inoiE
part, and has caused it to fall in about three
weeks ago. Other pieces have since followed
this one. Every few minutes a now crack
shows itself; at first as broad as a piece ol
thread, it becomes gradually broader and
broader, and one piece of tho mountain rap
idly follows another. At present a very
largo surface is in motion to the depth of
perhaps a thousand feet. A river and nil
the brooks which flowed down the mountain
have disappeared in the cracks ; paths which
were formerly nearly level been sepa
rated into little pieces of which some
are twenty feet higher than the next
one, and though the mountain was for
merly covered with large -forests, there is
now scarcely a single tree on it in its natural
position. They have been wrenched out of
the earth and thrown away in all directions,
some of them lying with their roots in the
air, and their heads in the cracks of the
mouutaiu.”
“Why, Mt. D- ,” said a tall youth to
a little person who was in company with
half a dozen huge men, “I protest you are
so very small I did not see you before.”—
“Very likely,” replied the gentleman 1 “I am
like a sixpeuce among six copper pennies—
not easily perceived, but worth tho whole of
them.”
If cucumber and melon vines are touched
once with a feather dipped in kerosene, bugs
or insects of any kind will not trouble them.
It will protect turnips and other tender plants
from the ravages of the fly. A, correspon
dent says he has used calomel for the last ten
years, with invaluable success. lie sprinkles
a few grains on each hill, and never loses a

No people, says the Memphis Bulletin,
have ever, after a long revolutionary strug
gle, escaped the clutches of just such a
party as that which is now ravaging the
Constitution, and trampling upon the
rights and liberties of the people. Ar.d
such parties just as surely die, and are
gibbetted by history for their crimes, as
do the seasons succeed each other. And
their end is always hastened by the crimes
of a brutal, ignorant, time-serving and
corrupt judiciary, such as that to winch
Radicalism has given birth.
An old freedman, in Texas, was asked,
a few days ago, if he was not going to
register. He wished to know how he
would have to proceed. On being told
that lie had to swear to support the Con
stitution, liis eyes widened, and, drawing
a long breath, he said he could’nt do
it, because he could’nt support himself!
“My son, said elder Spriggles to
Spriggles junior, thinking to enlighten
the boy on the propagation of the hen
species—“my son, do you know that
chickens come out of eggs ?” ‘Ho they ?’
said Spriggles junior, as he licked hi s
plate ; “I thought eggs come out of chick
ens.” Thus ended the first lesson.
