Juat Befora the Battle, Mother- A Parody—By TIAb. Just before the battle, mother, I was drinking mountain dew AY hen I heard Ibc foe a marching, •£ To the rear I quickly flew ; Thcro the stragglers were u flying. Thinking of their homes and wives, _ ’Twna not the foe that they were fearing, But their own precious live*. Chorus— Farewell, mother, you will shortly Sec your darling son ngnin, For if he only can sky-ddodle Dear mother he’ll come home to thee. Oh I long to see you, mother, And the other ones nt home. If I can get a chnnce, dear mother, I certainly will come. Beef and hard tack, dear mother, Are not the things to make one brave, 'Tis against my constitution To fill an early honored grave. llark ! I hear the bugle sounding, ’Tis the signal for the fray, I’ll crawl to some big tree, dear mother, And then I will he all O. K. I have no taste foi martial glory, Fame and honor is all in iny eye, I had rather be a homespu* private Than a Brigadier come home to die. Longevity.—Samuel Mittcr of Loch Sheldrake, Sullivan County, though nine ty years of ago is as rugged and vigor ous as are most men at fifty five. He ■till does about as much and as hard work on the farm as any of the workmen. Last Saturday he was in the field all day, reaping buckwheat and did a big day’s work at that. Mr. M. we are told erected the first building ever put up in Monticello. lie sawed the tops off of four trees at the point where the Liberty road joins Main street in that village, and built a house for those about to com mence work on the Newburgh and Coch ecton Turnpike. This was before the turnpike had been opened farther than Bridgcville, and, the old gentleman says, it took his party four days to get their teams through from Bridgeville to Mon ticello. Old as he is, and notwithstanding the fact that he has worked on several canals, he never saw either a canal or a railroad in operation.— Monticello, N. Y. Watchman. The Asiilky-Butlf.h Conspiracy.— It is said that a mass of testimony bear ing upon the alleged Ashlcy-Butler con spiracy has been collected since the pub lication of the Conover disclosures, and will soon be given out in another elabo rate paper from the office of the Attorney General. The additional testimony will include an affidavit of Capt. Chandler, formerly of the jail here, in which some important items are developed as to the proceedings of the alleged congressional conspirators, showing the connection with Conover and the way in which his aid was to bo obtained. Interviews between Mr. Dunham and Gen. Butler are said to be sworn to in ono of the affidavits, and one of the affidavits relates an occas sion where Butler is alleged to have paid SSO to Mrs. Dunham, and to haveupbraid ed her for not accomplishing what was expected from her. Chandler is said to be a man of good character, against whom nothing damaging can be produced. He is also a Radical, but bo is said to have teen so disgusted by what he saw and heard that lie deemed it his duty to inform the Government. — Wath, Cor. N, Y. Herald. Revolution.—Radical Journals at the South arc emphatic in their declarations that Congress will not submit to the Constitutional proclamations of President Johnson; they strive, in the same breath, to fasten the guilt of inciting revolution upon the Conservative papers. That’s an old trick of malefactors. Resolved upon war, or pretending to be, in case of defeat in politics, they vehemently and basely denounce innocent men as incen diaries and strife-provokers. It is a sly game, but a foolish one. If any war should grow out of present perplexities, the Southern Conservatives will have nothing to do with it ; but, from the or ganization and drills of the Grand Army of the Republic, Loyal Leagues, etc., the Southern Radicals seem determined to have a sanguinary finger in the pie, although that pie should be baked a thou sand miles away.— Constitutionalist. Rich and Poor—“ When I had noth ing of my own'' says one, “I felt as if the trees of the forest, the grass of the meadows, the sea and the sky all the stars verp mine, hut since I purchased this old house and garden I have no longer any thing else but a home and a garden.” A correspondent at the Virginia Springs where Gen. Lee is stopping, says that the General never talks politics, and pre fers the society of the other sex. Every morning he saddles his old grey horse and takes a ride, in company with two or three friends. Mrs. Lee is with him—“an old lady, of quiet, pleasant ways, almost helpless from rheumatism, confined to her cottage chiefly, and moving about only in a chair.” Gen. W. Custis Lee is also with the party. Good.—General Ord has caused the aarest of an officer charged with com plicity in the recent destruction of the office of the Arkansas Constitutional Eagle, and has ordered an investigation. — Exchange. To Kill Warts.—The following is said never to fail if properly applied : Make a strong steep, from red oak bark, in hot water ; when cold, apply as con venient ; the oftener the better. In a lew days the wart will disappear. II E 11 M A N N , . vt.mi.li is Fine Wnlelics, JetVcHj, Clock*, and sHVcr-l*ttr«i And Spectacles of all kinds. I have on hand a splendiiLsloek of DIAiIQNDS.
