Trip Lightly. .Trip lightly over trouble, Trip lightly over wrong, YTc only nmbo grief double By dwelling on it long. \Vhy clasp woe’s hand so tightly T Why sigh o’er blossoms dead? Why cling to forms unsightly ? Why riot sees joy instead ? Trip tightly over sorrow, Though all the day he davb, The son may shine to morrow, Ami gaily sing the lark ; Fair hopes hare uot departed, Though roses may have fled: Then nevor lie down hearted, But look for joy instead. Trip lightly over sadness, Stand not to rail at doom ; We’ve pearls to string of gladness, On this side of the tomb ; Whilst stars are nightly shining, Aud tlio heaven is overhead, Encourage not repining. 15ut look for joy instead. Why Cannot a Woman Become a Mason? At the late anniversary celebration of the Masons at Austin, Nevada, the orator of the day thus discoursed upoo thia vexed ques tion ; “Woman sometimes complains that she i« not permitted to enter our lodges and work with the Craft in their labors, and learn all there is to be learned in the institution. We will explain the reason. We learn that, before the Almighty had finished his work ( he was in some doubt about creating Eve. The creation of every living and creeping thing had been accomplished, and the Al mighty had made Adam, (who was the first M ison,) and created for him the finest lodge in the world, and called it Paradise No. I. He then caused all the beasts of the field and the (owls of the air to pass before him to name them, which was a piece of work he had to do alone, so that no confusion might thereafter arise from Eve, whom lie knew would make trouble if she was allowed to participate in it, if created beforehand, Adam being very much fatigued with the labors ofliis first task fell asleep,ar.d when be awoke he found Eve in the lodge with him. Adam, being senior warden, placed Eve a? the pillar of beauty in the south, and they received their instructions from the Grand Master in the east, which, when finished, she immediately called the craft from labor to refreshment. Instead of attending to the duties of her office as she ought, she left her station, violated her obligation, and let in an expelled Mason, who bad no business there and wentnround with him, leaving Ad am to look after the jewels. Thia fellow had been expelled from the Grand Lodgo, with several others, some lime before. But hear, ing the footsteps of the Grand Master, ho tnd de nly took his leave, telling Eve to go to making aprons, as she and Adam were not in proper regalia. She went and told Adam, and when the Grand Master returned to the lodge he found his gavel had been stolen. He called for the junior and senior war dens, who hud neglected to guard the door, and found them absent. After searching some time he came to where they were hid, and demanding of Adam what lie was doing there, instead cf occupying his official station, Adam replied he was waiting sot Eve to call the crafi from refreshment to labor again, and that the craft was not properly clothed, which they were making provisions for.— Turning to Eve, ho asked her what she had to offer in excuse for her urn ft ial and un masonic conduct. She replied that a fellow passing himself off as a grand iecturer had been giving her instructions, and she thought it was no harm lo Irani them. The Grand Master then asked her what had btcome of his gavel; she snid she didn’t know, unless the fellow had taken it away. Finding that Eve was no longer trust worthy, and that she had caused Adam to neglect bis duty, and had let in one whom He had expelled, the Grand Master closed the lodge, and turning them out, set a faithful tyler to gmrd the door, with a fl imirg sword. Adam, repenting his folly, went to work like a man and a good Mason in order to get reinstated again. Not so with Eve; she got angry about it and com' radioed raising Cain. Adam, on account of refoim.ation, was permitted to establish lodges and work in the lower degrees ; and while Eve was allowed to join him in the works of charity outside, she was never again to be admitted lo assist in the regular work of the craft, lie nee the reason why woman J cannot btcome an inside Mason.” A fond parent heard his daughter and her fellow plan an elopement. The next day the old man waited upon the young one and addressed him thus : “You are a fine, brave youth, and I don’t object to you as a soo-inslaw.— Here’s a hundred to aid in an elopement. Mav you live happily in the same house, and may no accident occur to throw the least shade on the sunshine of your life. AH I request is, that jou elope with my daughter —she’s a mighty fine gtrl you know, but somehow her mother and I could never travel with her ; ; wc don t know her good points ; elope with her o such a distance that she won’t return to her loving father and mother anymore. Good bye sonny, and may you always be happy.” There was’an elopement that evening of one. The young man went unaccom panied. He thought everything could not be entirely right when the old man was so anxious to get rid of the girl. His father looked npon his act as a» very i bit of strategy. * SADDLERY & HARNESS E M I' 0 It 1 U M and 1 C. ROOE It S, Decatur Street, " JT« second door below Messrs.
