Pomposity. Hold tint tliv head tpo high my friend, For surely thou niuutJcuo# The heaviest heads of wheat will bend The stalks on which they grow; And everywhere the Liveliest flowers Bloom nearest to the ground—•- The sweetest songsters of the wood In lowly shades abound. Hold not thv head toodiigh, my friend, Though rich in land and gold; The throngß that on thv stpp* attend Sjieak not the thoughts they hold ; Their true respect is only paid Where worthiness they see— Those deferential htiwa are made r Unto thy wealth, not thee. Hold not thy head too high, my friend, Whate’er thy station here ; For brains will triumph in the end— Wloffe then will be thy sphere? AVe envy not thy lordly Jreud, Nor nt thy lot repine— Who could not hold erect a head That weighs so light as thine ? ’Twas Ever Thus. I never feared a young gazelle, (Because, you sec, 1 never tried,) But. had it known and loved mo well. No doubt the creature would have died. My rich and nged Uncle John, lias known inc long and loved me well, But still nersist# in living on— I would he wero a young gazelle. I never loved a tree or flower; But if I had, I beg to say, The blight, the wind, tho sun, or shower, Would soon have withered it away, I’ve dearly loved mV Uncle John,. From childhood till the present hour, And yet he will go living on— I would he were a tree or flower. A Melancholy Fate.—The Gold Iltll (Nevada) News ot August ]6tb describes a lonely death in the desert: We have additional particulars in regard to Fleming, the man who perished on the Fifty Mile Doscrt beyond Ilagtown. Tt ap pears that, when on bis way out to Hum. boldt, Mr. Scott met Fleming, who oven then was. much in want of water, but was too diffident to ask for it, having roceired many rebuffs and inbults along the road oo account ofjliis being out of monsy. Mr. Scott had in bis wagon, at the time Mr. Fleming met him, a five-gallon keg of water, and had he asked fora drink, be would have )>een aupplied at once; but it seems that Fleming, fearing some sort of insult, would not make known his wants. lie stated that be was from Montaaa, and that he left the country with but seventeen dollars, all of which sum but twenty-five cents be had expended before stalling in upon the desert. He said that, after giving out, aud when he had but little hope of reaching water, he made up hi» mind that, in case he failed to find water, he would cut his throat with a rsior which he bad with him, rather tbau to endure the pangs of thirst; but while in a delirious state, he tore off’hi* clothes and lost hi* razor. His elbows and knees were worn almost to the bone by the rocks aud sand over which he had crawled for two miles before lying down to die. On his return, five days after be first met Fleming, Air. Scot!, who had taken the night for crossing the desert, heard groans, and fearing it was sotno sort of decoy of the Indians, drove rapidly to Rngtown. Here be told what be had heard, when A*a Ken yon took a team and returning, found the man and brought him in. Breathes there a man with soul so dead— who never to him*otf r ,hath said —I will » local paper take —holb lor myeelf nud (aint )_y’s fake s—ls such there he, let him repent —and have the paper to him sent—and if he’d jata a happy winter —he in advance should pay the printer. The Ckops in Makion.—Our correspond ent, “Beushaw,” sends us the following letter; No living man recollects ever having seen as tunny rainy days in ' one year as we have bad in tbi*. The whole month of June and part of July wore in fact lost time, and du ring the whole year up to the middle of Sep tember, we had from one to four rainy days every wetk, consequently the crops have eeen seriously injured. The freedmen work ed much mure steadily this year than they did last, and the fai'uro of the crops at least j n this section cannot be fairly attributed to them. I do not believe more than half a crop of cottcu w ill be made, and an average of about two-lhirds of a crop of corn. Peas will prove r total failure. Rice is doing well and will abundantly repay those who planted it, lut the rapid decline in cotton will ruin the planters. If cotton had kept up to about 28 cents per pound, they might have saved themselves. At present ptices farming wilj prove a ruim us business, pecuniarily as well as politically. The future for us is very dark. Mav God help us. —Charleston Mercury. Girls Read. —Girls, beware of transient young meo. Never suffer the addresses of a stranger. Recollect a steady farmer bov or mecbanio is worth ah the floating trash in the world. The allurements of a dandy Jack, with a gold chain about his neck, a walking stick in his paw, some hon est tailor’s coal on his back, and a brainless skull, can never make up for the loss of a fathei’s house, a good mother’s counsel, and the society of brothers and sisters. Their affections last, while that of an idle young mau are lost in the wane of the honeymoon. An exchange asserts that there is a man in Georgia so big that he fishes with a railroad line and smokes a stove pipe. SADDLERY & HARNESS' EMPOItI U M . f < C.
