QUERRY 1
We would like to known whv such a direct
and positive rinalatinn of the City and State
Lews as was enacted on Wednesdy last by
the negroes is going unpunished. The white
man that killod the negro has been arreted
and lodged in jail, while the prominent leaders
s! the riotus conduct are permitted to go at
large Tho safety of the lives of all de
mands that theso law-braakers bo arrested and
dealt with in tbo highest tribunal of the coun
ty. A punishment impose and by the Citt Coun
cil would not be sufficient to quell tho raging
animosities of the offenders, but would only
terd to lead them on to worse deeds, therefore,
we insist upon the action of higer authority, not
from any prejudice to the blacks, for wo enter
tain none, but. as friends to law and order.
HORSEMAN "SPARE 1 HAT TREF/’—
We would remind cur country friend?
that the City Council has imposed a fine of
One Hollar on any person hitching a horse
or mule ato shade tree. Wc have heard of,
our Marshal collecting fines from several. ;
Our '‘devil” says if they had been taking i
the "Herald” they would pot have had the j
fines to pay.
GREAT DISTURBANCE —A NEGRO J
KILLED— i
Our city was the scene of tumult and j
disorder on Wednesday last, caused by the
killing of a negro man, Allen duckson, by
a white man named Wm. M. Curry. About
2 o'clock m the eveni i„. a fraci;- occurred
near the Circus pavilion, between them, in
which Mr. Curry shot the ?g"o. killing j
him instantly. A large crowd of negroes j
rushed np and seized Cuifiy, and wore using
him very roughly, and it is unknown what
they would have don* had it not b“en for /
the timely interposition of oar brave and
feat less Marshal. While the prisoner was j
being conveyed to jaii, th? negt oea follow j
ed in large gangs clamoring for Lis life.— j
Some two hundred form, and in front of the i
Court House armed with pistol.-, club-, etc. ,
aud threatened to wrest tho prisoner from
the hands of ‘he officers awl put into exe
cution the Lynch lav/, but seeing the de~
tenmwition of the officers to resist them,
the negroes became somewhat quiet. Fears
were entertained of an assault upon the
Jail, and preparations were made to frus- j
trate such an attempt.
During these w ild demonstration?, fright- '
oned ladi"? were passing the streets, und
the whole scene excited an alarming ap
prehension as to Ihe -afcty.of our citiz ' '?
From the demonstrations made and the
language used bj the colored population,
we think it high time that some precaution
ary measures should be adopted by the cit
izens.
