AGRICULTURAL
Caro of Stock.
The principal oLjcct of interest
to most farmers in winter is their
stock. Then, when the earth ceases
to produce, the horse and cow and
poultry are all of daily value and
continue to yield profits. The
proat secret of increasing this pro*
ductiveness is not only to takegood
care of them, but to learn how to
do it. Much of this is in treating
the animals to that variety which
is as agreeable to them as to man.
Thus, a horse, as the Rural World
soggests, will get t.rcd of stand
iug and treading on a hard floor
so will a cow, a sheep, a mau. A
•oft bed feds easy—gives rest ;
and yet wc neglect bedding of our
stables to a great extent. Injured
limbs and other ailments, especial-,
ly of the hoof, arc the result often
of a neglect here as has been clear
ly enough shown, and as any man
can dearly enough see, if he gives
the subject a moments thought.
And with straw, which is plenty,
or saw' dust or tan bark or shavings
The dryer these materials are the
better. Every day remove the
moistened bedding and replace
with new. Such a floor, well bed'
tied, adds greatly to the warmth
of a stable, and-thus becomes a sod
der saver. The small holes and
crevices in a floor with a good bed-,
ding upon them, will l&t no cold
through and will drain the floor.
Rather have a ground floor than
hard, naked plank. The same is
true for cows, in milk, of whom an-
other writer says that a frequent
change of food is important at this
season of the year. There is great
advantage in this change, for if one
description of food is constantly
used, the cows tire of it, eat it less
greedily and soon show a reduc
tion of produce. The very novelty
of change seems to w'liet the ap
petite and to stimulate the vitality
of the whole system, of course, to
promote the secretions. Those
near large towns can get a few
brewer’s grains, feed out some
roots and occasionally a breakfast
es shorts will be found to pay.—
Cabbage ought to be raised more
extensively as a fodder crop. -
They are most excellent, and the
yield is enormous. Study change
and feed regularly. A correspond
ent of the Prairie Farmer, who
keeps a dairy, knows it to be a
fact, that if his cows were not salt
ed as often as every fourth day
they would fall off in their milk
from a pint to a quart per day.
The question how much wheat
does it take to make a barrel of
flour is often asked, and the answer
ii of a general character, ‘ five
bushels are allowed.” At the am
nual fair of the Dubuque, lowa.
Agricultural Society, 1866, a pro*
mium of lliree dollars was # offered
for the best barrel of flour made
•from winter wheat, A firm enter
ed one barrel of each accompanied
with a statement that sixteen
bushels of winter wheat yielded
three barrels and one hundred and
three pounds of fl, ir, at the rate of
four bushels and fifteen pounds of
wheat to the barrel. Os spring
wheat fifty bushels yielded eleven
barrols of flour, being four bushels
and thirty-two pound to the bam
rel. ihe wheat was a fair quality
ana no more.
Remedy for Asthma. —A doso
—one table spoonful-- once a day,
of plain flour of sulphur and mo
lasses or honey, is a sure and n Q v~
er-failing remedy for asthma. It
must be taken every day for some
weeks, as well when the patient
breathes well as ill.
Economy Pudding.— Butter a
deep dish, put in-a layer of grated
stale bread, a layer of apples pared,
and slice very thin, a layer of nice
brown sugar, and one of spices.
Repeat this process till the dish is
heaped full, and bake it oue hour,
Serve with sweet sauce.
Fotatoe Pie.— Boil large sweet
potatoes till done, peel and slice
them into a deep pic pan, lined with
paste, a layer of potatoes and one
of sugar, spices, nd butter, add a
little, wine and cover with thick
paste.

It is the only Cushion'that possesses all the
qualities essential to a perfeot Cushion. It is
the most elastic and most durable Cushion ever
offered to the billiard-playing public as is a
bundantly proven hythe great demand 5
since its introduc'inn. The peculiarity w
distinguishes the Cat-Gut Cushion and rendeis
it superior to ail others, is the tightened cord

the rubber r.nd running the full length of the
Cushion, Mhiah prevents the ball from heeding
into the rubber and jumping fojm the table
The addition of the oitgut cord also adds much
