JL __JJ ■ , THE LOCAL PAPER— We find the following triHhfu! sentiment in an exchange, and being sc apropos we adopt them: “Whether the people will or not, the local paper is their representative abroad, their embassador in foteign parts, by which they roust be judged. Let them then take a patriotic interest in giving it news, co-operation and patronage. Like every other duty performed, it will pay in the long run.” THANKSGIV.NG DAY— In accordance wilih the. - Proclamation o 1 the President, and ot' Governor Jenkins, Thursday was observed as a day of Thanksgiving to God for his many mer cies, by a goodly portion of our communi ty. Stores were closed, and religious aer- Tices were held both in the toonuag and night. With great pleasure we report! the observance«f tbedsy. Amid all theca* la mi ties that bavj thickened upon us be cause ot our was. many a goklen thread of mtpcy is entwined. A rather precocious young lady of our acqualntanc , while searching for some poetry, stopped abstractedly to a few mo. ments, and than suddenly exclaimed, with a great andf 7 ’.! of earnestness: “Oh, mother, do you know where My Absent Husband’ is?” It is supposed that the mother’s amazement w»s dispelled, when her daughter found the lost poetry under the bureau. It is that the citv authorities buy n number of .Mendenhall's Looms and set the women who have to receive public support, to weaving cloih upon them—the proceeds of their work to be applied to the support of disa bled paupers. Serious Railroad Awitient. The (special train on the Alab maA Flor. ida Railroad,.which left Greenville about 1L o'clock last Saturday night tor Mobile, with Dan Gastello’s circus and menagerie aboard, ran off the track below Pollaid .early Sunday morning, smashing up live cars, the cages containing the aniinalg, and hilling one-man end horse, and one animal. The accident was c aused by a broken rail of the track. For a time nil the ariroqls were at large, but were finally decoyed in to the cages by the keeper; hut before this could be done, however, the bear succeeded in killing a h autifu! deer belonging to the -'oHtction. The car containing the elephant upset completely, and his eiephantship fell out and turned a suui-rsanlt down the em bankment, and into the woods. Tie and m ago to the mauaguriu and railroad ava- con siderable, which, together with the loss <f life, is deeply to be deplored. The circus troupe, we learn, reached Mobile in time to perform yesterday. It is to be hoped the same fate will not befall Swayne’s menagerie at the Capitol, when the animals depart lor their respec tive homes ! —Montgomery Mail. Testimonials.
