The 3iew Year—
W<> would to God that we could, oxteud
the usual salutation to our rfcaders.bat the
past has been a year of gloom and despair,
and the New ore looms up bsfore us. pre
senting no ray of hope for our down-trod
den people. In our sufferings let us be pa
tient and cheerful, aud perhaps before thi s
year shall have glided away deliveiauce
may ■<« our* S.ot us we-t end see tlv sal»
valion of the Lord.
CHANGE OF DAY—
We have deemed it advisable to change
the day of publication of our paper from
Saturday to Thursday morning. Adver
tisements and all other matter iut*nded for
the Herald, MUST be handed in on Wed
nesday morning!, or sooner, to insure pub
lication. Our subset ibets will hereafter be
sewed regularly on Thursday mornings.
'ife CHc EKING—
To have eo raany of oar old subscribers
so come forward acd renew their subscrip
lions. Friends, we need more help Wc
w iat to build up a larger paper, and one
ibat will be a welcome visitor to every firc
eide. The amount we require from each
one is a mere trifle, and every (amity in
the county is able to take their, county pa
per. If'you have no money, bring us rags,
wood, provisions, or anything l! at we can
conveniently ccnvert into money. We want
to see how many more will come up and
imitate the example of those who have re
newed their subscriptions for another year.
RELIGIOUS —
During the present week, religious ser
vices are being held in each of the Churches
alternately.
A Lecture to the young men of ouf city,
will be delivered in the Presbyterian Church
to-night, by Rev. C. W. Lane, and we do
hope that none will stay away, but attend
and listen to something that will be of bene
fit both in this life, and life to come. The
public generally are invited to attend.
TEACHER WANTED—
To scan the advertising columns of our
paper, it will be ;cen that the Trustees of
ocr Male School are wanting a teacher to
take charge of the School for the present
.■year. A competent gentleman will find
this a good opening.
CHRISTMAS—
This usually merry and lively season was
scarcely observed at all with oui people.—
With the exception of a few parties, the
holidays passed quietly away Some little
amusement was had in the streets. Save
one little difficulty, good order prevailed
throughout.
In these times of oppression and almost
universal bankrup'ey, Che people have no
heart to euter into enjoymeut.
r A SUSPENSION— ***
Incompliance with a time-h,moved cos
tom, we did notissue any paper during
Christinas work, and in view o! a coatems
plated change in the day of publicut on, on
ly a half sheet was printed lad week. Ac
cording to our way of rcckonirg. Fifty
numbers constitute a volume. We -hall
endeavor to be regular ir. tur hibdt rsadal

Wc notice that fc\ era! changes hi te been
,made with our bmdttoss men this week. W
-G. Johnson have removed their
stock of Goods to Mount Zi«o, Hancock
county. f Their aid stand is now occupied
by J. M. Ntory * 00.
Job t Mitchell has bought the stand forms
eily occupied by J. M. S.ory & Cos., end
opened a retail Grocery thererh.
The Gtni of Williami A Nicholson has
expired by limitation; the senior partner
continuing the business one door north of
B. F. Greeac'i old stand.
Our near neighbor, J. L. Tarwater, ba
removed to hi* reiideuce in front of the
Presbyterian Church.
A GOOD KOAD-
A recent trip over the Memphis A Charles
ton Railroad, enables us to commend it to
traveler* going West. This is one of thi
best managed Roads in the South, and 1*
the cheapest and quickest route! for west
ern travel. 7t makes close connection with
moat of the other roads, and no unnocessn'
ry delay-, are made on the line. The ears
are neat and clean ; conductors polite and
accommodating, and system and regularity
aFe marked features of the whole road.
HON. AUGUSTUS REESE- .
Was in our city this week, looking ohew- j
ful and in good health. Judjc Reese has
commended himself to the heart ol < very
true -Southerner for his patriotic and man
ly course with the military tyrant at Atlan
ta. and deserves the esteem and respects of
all wherever he goes.

THE CHRISTMAS NUMBER—
Os Burke’s Tfuekly is the very best yet
irsued of 'hat ch,.l ining paper for Boys and
Gills Besides ihc continuation of ' Ma»
rooner’s Island" aud ‘‘Jack Dobell, or A
Boy’s Adventures in Texas,’’—both of which
arc increasing in interest—it contains a,
number of original stories. The engrav
ings—-sixteen in number—are veiy beauti
ful,'while the piper is as printed
as any siittilar publication in this country.
Burke’s Weekly is deservedly popular
among the young folks, gnd we wonder
that every boy and girl iu the country is
not a subscriber to it. The publishers
promise some new and attractive feature
for IS6B. A Story o, the War, writteu for
children, will b commenced In the pieeenr
month, and will run scvcrnl months, and it
is particularly desirable that new subscrip
tions should be sent at once.
Rack cumbers from the beginning, in
handsome covers, can still be supplied.—
Terms, $2 a year. We will furnish our
paper and Buiko’s Weekly for s3—6e_d
in your names and money and obtain four
times the amount in good, reading matter.
•THE GRATJACRETS,—
Ar.tl how they Lived. Fought and Hied
for Dixie, with Inc ideutsr and Sketches ol
Life in the Confederacy,” is the title of a
handsome volume, just issued by Jones
Brothers A Cos.. Atlanta, Ga. There is a
certain portion of the War that will never
go into the regular histories, nor be embo
died fn romance or poetry. Which is a very
real part of it. aud will, if preserved, con
vey to succeeding generations a better idea
ofthe spirit of the conflict than many dry
reports or careful narrative* of events,"and
this part may be called tha gossip, the fuu,
the pathos ot the War. This illustrates
the character of the lenders, the humor of
the soldiers, the devotion of women, the
bravery of men, Ike pluck of oar heroes
) the romance and hardships of tHe service.
| From the beginning of the warithe author
jhas been engaged in collecting all the an
ecdotes connected wiUi or illustrative of it,
and has group°u and classified them under
appropriate heads, and iu a very attractive
form.
The book’s contents include reminiscen
ces of camp, picket, spy, scout, bivouac,
siege, and be (lie-field, with t milling feat*
of bravery, wit drollery, comical and ludi
crous adventures, et*., etc.
Amusement as well as instmetion may
be found in every page, as graphic detail,
brilliant wit, and authentic history, are
skillfully interwoveu in this work of lite
rary art.
It is just such a volume as will find nu
merous purchasers, and just such a one as
persons seeking to act as book agent
should add to their list.
RECIPES—
It may not be known to all our lady rea-
Iders. that very nice hogs foot jelly may be
made without lemons, wine and several do
zen eggs. For the lemons, substitute
enough white wine vinegar, or any good
vinegar, to make it acid. Boil it with su
gar, a few sticks of cinnamon and the
whites and shells of towo eggs, in the usual j
way till clear. Strain it. aud when nearly
cold. Fist befbre it congeals, add exiract of
lemon to flavor.
Another hint in these hog killing times
may not be,amiss. A fresh hog’s head
(bailed till the bones o»in be taken out cash*
ily. makes as good asince meat as beef, the
Ifes of the head anaw ring fto batter.
