THE NEGRO By Aaibl
Xnmber 1.
Somebody has set many of our,
good people to wondering whether i
the negro belongs to the human j
family, by a bold rash pamphlet
with the above title, “smattered’’'
nil over with just enough of scie. ce
to make it puazlo the unwary read*
er. The pamphlet makes the n«s
gro a beast. Now ordinarily, such
a grim joke night bo left to fur
nish material for a funny editorial,
or a question lor discussion in an
old field' School Debating Societ ,
but as many persons are inclined to
believe it true, and as such a
belief is attended with disastrous
consequences if carried out, we
think it duo to truth to expose its
falsity. We propose applying the
dessecting knife to its propositions
in a scries-of articles.
11 eve the book T Beeauso f rst ‘ex
tremes beget extremes.’ Radical'
ism is seeking to force the freed
nian to the ruin of himself and the
South, into a position of social and
political superiority for which he
is totally unqualified. This crcatos
a tendency in the mind of the
wronged and outraged while race
of the South io exaggerate the in
feriority of the negro race, lor
thereby he magnifies the stupendous
follv and crime of his Radical op
prcssOrs. The iniquity and cruelty
of the Radicals towards both south
ern races need no such false suppo
sition as that the negro is a beast
to bring out itsenormily. Again,
the subjects ol ethnology and Bibs
lical criticism which arc involved
iu the discussion lies beyond tho
raugo of study and investigation
which nine tenth, of even .no t in
telligent citizens over enter, A
book which speaks with bold posi
tiveness on these subject? and lays
down as facts, statement after
statement, ft on; which it reasons
acutely, carries with it a plausibil
ity that they have no means at
hand of testing. Again, many
more are led to believe it from the
loose assertion that ‘‘the learnod
and the clergy have been unable to
answer it.’’ This N untrue. Rev.
Dr. Young of Tennessee, Rev. Dr.
Oeridcau, a gifted son of South
Carolina, the Columbia Review
and two able and scientific writers
in the Southern Presbyterian, be
sides sundry others of the learned
and clergy of the South, have com
pletely exposed the blunders and
sale sfalements of this rash joker.
This book, if believed, cither bv
the negro or the white man, tends
to alienate the two races and do
stroy good feeling between them.
This 13 tho mildest statement of
its practical influence. Absolute
ly essential to the return of South
ern prosperity is the establishment
of confidence and increasing good
will between the two races. Oc
cupying the same country, the in
terest of the Southern negro and
of the Southern white man arc
bound up together. The improve
ment of their condition must be
based upou the improvement of
ours—and vine versa. He who
would alienate the race?, whether
he be a Southern Radical or South
ern extremist, is guilty of a high '
crime against the interests of both
races before God and man. We

races a per vice to ex; ose t! o falsi
ty of this book.
In this article, doferring to sub
sequent articles, a notice of‘A rioTri
book in detail, we give them sfiort
and easily tested proofs that the
African is of the human family.
Ist. He is distinctly referred to
in Jeremiah xi'.i : 23, ‘Cun the
Ethiopian change his skin, Ac.’—]
Now Hebrew scholars tell -.is lliati
in the Hebrew the word ‘Ethiopian’
is 'Cushite.’ Why is it the negro,
the Ethiopian called the Cushite ?
Undoubtedly because he descended
from Cush, the son ol Ham. rice
Gen. 10 ; G.
The descendants of one of Ham’s
sons Canaan, were called Cynaan
ites. The descendants ol another
of Ham's sons Cush, now called
Cushites.
The Cushite or Ethiopian, or
I African then, descended from //am
and of course from Noah and is
I therefore a human being.
2nd. The Bible plainly teaches
that Christ died for the human race
only. Asa beast cannot be guilty
of sin, so it cannot be a partaker
of holiness. No beast was made
in the image of God—was suscepti
ble of ‘a knowledge of good and
evil’ for in this the image of God
chiefly consists not as some absurd
ly imagine in anything in the phy
sical form for ‘God is a Spirit.’
Ate Africans sinners? does the
salvation of Christ exteud to
them '! if so, they are human be
ings of our own iallen race. Now
to say nothing of striking instances
of repentance and conversion
among the Afrcans of this conn
try and at the Mission Station in
Africa, the Bible itself asserts the
final triumph of the Gospel among
the .//lrican as well as other races.
‘Ethiopia shall socn stretch out her
hands unto God,'’ Ps. 68 : 51. This
! then is the argument:
i 1. Christ saves only human be
; ings.
2. lie saves Africans.
3. Therefore Alricans are hu
man b ings.
3rd. It cat: eabily be shown that
the existence of black men or Ethi
opian, in nations or tribes iu Af
rica, was well human in the days
of the .//postles.
When, then, the Apostle Paul
states in .‘/cts 16 : 26, that God
made of our blood all the nations
of men for to dwell on all the face
the nations
men—. Africans and all (for in their
simplicity they thought African
tribes of men, not having tho Cin
cinnati wiseacre to enlighten
them)—all who low grouped to
