If Hie I‘ress would exert itself
like tke miimter ia crying dowa
the prevailing vices, wedare say, a
more gloaiug future would light
up before us. it cannot be expect
ted of God to prosper the press, or
ihe jieople, when so much vulgaris
tv and profanity arc encouraged
through the columns of a newspa
per. Wo can scarcely cull an ex
change without finding its columns
polluted with immoral, irreligious
or indelicate expressions. And
yet these smutty articles are sought
after and read by the most laslid
’ons. The press should be as pure
as the pulpit, and one of its great
aims should be to cncourag: a high
and cultivated tone of morals.
Without enumerating the many
evils arising from an impnre press,
wo wpuld announce our determina-*,

TOE GREAT ([HZ,

BY AIM EL.
KIITIBEK S*.
The ‘wooden nutmeg' logic of
this modern Daniel that has come
to judgment.’ appears in the ouA
set, iu the statement of the tjaes
11oii to be examined, and reminds
one of the nursery story of the
man with ‘his seveu league boo's.’
’Tie a regular seven league stride
that he takes, passing from the
first to the last extreme fact in the
problem, without allowing the toe
of his scientific foot to stub itself
agaiust any one ot the long row ol
tacts, that lie between the two ex
treme ones. Hear him as lift en
ters tno Mid ana commences to
flourish bis sword over 'the learn
ed and the clergy.’
‘J t will be admitted all that we
now have existing on earth two
races of men, the white and black,
(See Ariel, page 4.)' All along lie
argues as though thOre were but
two races, the white and the black.
Starting with the white man he
strides over all [the intervening
races* as though they had no exis
tence. Mow Cuvier and Biumen
bach made five races and Prichard
seven; but the advocates of p!u
ta’.ity of species have iu.-Uted, some
on seventeen, auioipus again on
as many as jorty us*rtLiaJijt differ
cut species. When ‘Avid’ opens his
learned mouth, it setfins there a;c
only two races—the whia; and the

It is this immense omission, taking
ouly the two extreme facts and
leaving cut all the in*eimfidiaie
Ones that gives an nir of momen
tary plausibility to Ariel's position.
To illustrate : Suppo-e there a r e,
say forty pieces of iron—parts of a
machine—lying in a row on t!.o Je- 1
pot platform. The fit st and for
tieth only are exposed to sight.—
Xjie intervening ones are carefully
covered up with plank. Now as
you look at No 1, and compare it
with No 40, they differ so much in
shape and appearance that it may
be easy to convince you that they
have no connection with each oth
er. are not parts of the piece of ma
chinery. But let the piank be re
moved, You see that piece Xo 1
differs cut slightly Iroua and cdu
neets with piece Xo 2, that piece
Xo 2 diffe/s but slightly from and
connects wi.h piece Xo 3, thut piece
Xo 3 differs but slightly horn and i
conp?(ts with piece Xo 4. that'
piece Xo 4 differs but slightly mom !
and connects with piece Xo 5, and
so on through the whole series.
Thatjast as trim the previous pie
ces, piece Xo 39 dihers but slight
ly from and conuects with piece
Xo 40.
The inference is irresistible that
widely as piece Xo ] diu'ws in
shape and appearance from piece

be compelled to see tlmt they a ere

Accordingly, Dr. Lawrence, Pro

remember these intervening varie

(comparatively speaking) of these
