TIIE GREAT
T 3-1 E NEGRO.
BY ARIEL.
REDDER 3.
'Ariel' recklessly asserts, that
"the clergy and many learned
men,'' hold that the name of llain
and the curs-e ‘lor accidentally see
ing his father Noah naked' change
ed Ham into a negro. Ho waxes
warm in demolishing this position.
‘He has only set up a man of straw
and then wasted time in living to
knock him down. That is not, as
he alleges, the position of the cler
gy. Some individuals, here and
there, have traced the Ethiopian
blackness to the curge upon Ca
naan, but no such idea has ever
extensively prevailed in the Chris
tian ministry cr Church.’ —South-
ern Presbyterian Review, Nov. ’67.
If it be asked by the reader how
do ‘the learned and the clergy’ ac
count for the black Hkin, wooly
hair, <fcc., of the negro race, we re
ply, neither ‘the learned nor the
clergy, protend to be able fully to
account lor these remarkable dif
ference?. What else, besides dif
ference of climate and habits ol
living, has conspired to produce
the many differences in color, &c.,
in the human race, we do not yet
know. Rut let it be carefullv re
membered, that the difficulty is ex
actly as great and of the same kiud,
to account for the differences in the
complexion, color of the hair and
eyes, shape of the head, See , that
you find in every family connexion
among the white race. Explain
why, of a brother and lister, one
lias sometimes light skin, light hair
and blue eyes; and the other has
black hair and eye?, and a brunette
complexion?—why children of dark

Europe ar« generally light-haired,
blue eyed blondes, and the same
race in Southern Europe are gen
erally black-haired, black eyed
brunettes; fully explain h"w these
differences come about among the
Caucasian race, and yoa can then
easily explain how the many dif
ferences in color, <Co., among th
entire human race originated.—
The •moll nut of diversities among
the Caucasian race is just as diffi
cult to crack us the larger nut ol
physical differences between the
two races, Moreover, it is a wide
ly prevalent law of nature that
many varieties, differing in form,
color, etc . shall occur in the same
species both of plants and of an
imals. The varieties of roses, ap
ples, etc-, are almost innumerable.
Look at the domestic animals, wiiat
varieties of color, form, etc.,
among horse*, cattle, hogs, etc.—
The diversity found in the human
family is a part of the same gener
al law.
As lo the causes of these numer
ous diversities ‘the learned and
the clergy,’ as a body, assert noth
ing positive. The clergy and ma
ny of the learned do maintain that
notwithstanding these wide diver
sities the evidence is overwhelm
ing that ‘God lias made of one
blood all nations,’ aud tribes ol
men.
Again, ‘Ariel* makes a tremen
dous leap into the air from his log
ical spiing board, in trying to
piore that tho negro could not
have descended from Ham. Now
Haro had soar sous, Cush, Mizram,
Pb t and Canaan: see Gen. 10: 6.
*An«i* multiplies evidence to prove
that tho descendants of Mizram
and Canaan were a straight-hair
ed, non negro race. We grant all
this. But ho says not a word about
tho descendants of Cush and I’hut.
Now, we gn vo Scriptural evidor.ee
in our Grst article, for asserting
that the Ethiopian is a descendant
of Cu'h. He dodges Cash alto
gether. This is the cream of logs
ic. a man had committed
murder. Would any law. er try
to clear him bv proving that two
of his brother* had no hand in it?
'Ariel' reasons in this way.
This is ‘letter A,- steam refined
ratiocination, //o can easily prove
that a ohestnut horse is a horse :
cJjestnut-
The negro d:d not descend from
Mizram or Canaan, therefore says
‘Ariel,’ be did not de&end from
Cash their brot' tor. We have giv
THE GREENSBORO’ HE R A L D .
en positive Scripture to show that
he did bo descend*
Once more. - The numerous points
of resemblance between the white
and black man show conclusively
that they are both of the same
race. ‘Ariel’ docs not deign to
glance at theso. We state some of
them chiefly as given by Bachman:
•‘The white man and the black
man atc alike—
1. In having the same number
and kind of teeth and of equal
length.
2. in having 208 bones in the
body.
3. In having two hands and an
oicct staturo.
4. In the articulation of the
head with the spinal column.
5. In having a smooth skin, and
the head covered with hair.
6. In having exactly the same
number and arrangement of the
muscles iu every part of the body.
7. In being omniverous or capa
bio of living on all kinds of food.
8. Iu being of slower growth
than any other nuimal, and arriv
ing laier at maturity.
9. In being liable to similar dis
eases which never affect the brute
creation.
10. In being able to laugh and
to crv.
11. In having organs of speech
and the power of singing.
12. In having conscience and
mental faculties, aad being suscep
tible of influence by motives drawn
from eteinity.
Jhis places the most besotted
white or black man, at an infiuite
distance above the brute creation,
and destroys every vestage of af
finity between the most degraded
man black or white, anl the mon
key, baboon or gorilla.’
Resides these resemblances, there
a. e several other physical peculiar
ities in which the white and black
race are alike and different from
the whole animal creation. Sci
ence and philosophy then combine
with revelation in asserting that
the white man and the black man
both belong to the grett human
family. Wo to the man who puts
asunder what God has joined to
gether. L.

From Washington,
. ..v iarest r.ews from Washing

The President has by virtue of his

Thomas in his stead, but Stanton
refuses to deliver up the office.—
Thomas was arrested for violating
some Radical Law and is bound
in the sum of 15,000. The matter
has been submitted to the courts,
where it will likely remain.
That lawless conclave, styling
themselves the Congress of the
United States, which is no more
the Congress, than is the convicts
at Milledgcville, the Legislature ol

to further their wicked designs.
The latter having control of the

the Dccessary means to quoll this

Dispatches of encouragement to

The Radicals are firing guns in

At Nowsitc, Tallapoosa county,
Ala., one night recently, at a party
or dance a young man by the

casting reflections on the good

called Boon to oue side and stab

soon as the blow was struck,
staggered a few paces, aod per
ceiving he was cut, pulled out his
knife and cut Jones severely in
several places. Boon died almost
instantly after cutting Jones, and
Jones died during the night from
the effect* of his wounds. The
case will not undergo legal inves
