Whoever believes the accidental
President will remain quiet until
the trial is ended may know human
nature, but he certainly does not
understand that of A. J. One
thing is certain, that quiet as all
appears on the surface, the gravest
apprehensions of a serious collision
here arc felt by parties who have
the best means of judging, and the
largest stake in the contest . Per
haps I may be considered sensation
al if I say that Secretary Stanton
has excellent reasons for appreheud
ing an attempt to abtain control
by force of his Department. Yet
what 1 state is no simple truth.—
You may rest assured that Mr.
Stanton is well informed of the
movements going on in the city
and vicinity. They arc dangerous.
Df that there can bo no doubt.—
The President has definitely ta
ke.i another step forward in the
certain and direct collision which
he evidently seeks. As you know,
the Adjutant General took his seat
at the Cabinet mooting, in his ad
interim character. At that Cabi
net Mr. Johnson demanded of his
Secretaries that they fail to recog
nize Mr. Stanton. It is understood
that 1 homas will issue orders look
ing to a forcible occupation ot
what lie calls “my Department
also, that relieving Hancock he
will, as Secretary of War, issue au
order forming the Military Divis
ion of the Atlantic, and place the
General in command. Grant will,
it is believed, refuse to promulgate
them. Thomas will persist in is
suing them. Grant is to be placed
under arrest for disobedience,—
General Emery, it is understood,
is to be placed in this position
first. General Gordon Granger
lias been here for some weeks lie
is thorough sympathy with Andy.
Hancock will soon be here. The
commandant of this post (not Em
ory, who commands the Departs
ment), is also reported to be in
sympathy with Andy, it is de
clared, on good authority too, that
among the schemes which have
been seriously discussed, is ouefor
the seizure of the Capitol, and the
preventing of Congress from as
sembling. All these, and many j
others of a similar nature, are not
.made puoiic. ihe effort is to keep
them quiet. They come to me
through credible channels. I do
-not vouch lor them, but only men
tion them as among the strong
probabilities of the situation.— j
There is one suspicious fact—the
town is full of rebels.

ELOQUENT SPEECHES MADE BY
DR. TUCKER, HON. MILES W.
LEWIS AND COL J. H. SEALS.
OLD GREENE ALL RIGHT—
THE BALL IN MOTION.
Pursuant to previous notice, a
large and respectable number of
the white citizens of Greene coun
ty assembled at the Court House
on Tuesday Jast, to select Dele
gates to the Convention in Augus
ta on the 31st, and to take into
consideration the best policy to
pursue under the pre sent circum
stances-
The following gentlemen were
selected .*
Hon. Milos W. Lewis, Col. J.
11. Seals and J. R Sanders Esq.,
While the committee had retired
to select the delegates, Dr, Tucker
was called on and responded in a
few pertinent remarks.
The meeting w’as afterwards
ably and eloquently addressed by
Hon. Miles W. Lewis and Col.
J. H, Peals, The speeches o r
these gentlemen wore enthusiastic
and soul-stirring, and tended to
arouse the people from their apa
thetic state to the dangers tbai
surround them. They endeavored
to impress upon the minds of tho
people the importance of prompt
and vigorous action to defeat the
infamous constitution recently
framed in Atlanta and submitted
for our ratification. They con
sidered the relief ordinance con
tained in the Atlanta Constitution
a piece of chicanery to get votes,
and cautioned the people agaiust
supporting it with tho hope of be
ing relieved of their honest debts.
Congress cannot constitutionally
adopt the constitution as it now
stands, aud is surprising, said one
of the speakers, to see native born
Georgians who once occupied

from their slumbers, and manifest
some hope of rescuing our country
from impending dangvr, The ball
is now in motion, let every man
bestir himself and see what ran
be done to defeat the wicked de
signs of the negro Radical Party.
We have an important work to ac
complish and it behooves evervman
not to dally whilst the enemies ot
the Constitution of our Fathers are
seeking to destroy this great pal
ladium of American liberty and
place the ignorant, and besotted
negro upon aie’itical aud social
equality with the white race.
Another meeting will be held on
next Saturday, and it is hoped that
every voter will be present aud
lake a part in the meeting. A
motion was made and unanimously
adopted requesting the colored vo
ters to attend. A committee was
appointed to consider and report
on that day as to tho propriety of
nominating candidates ior the vas
rious county offices.

about $125. As tho fair “levan

to believe that she must be “a

Which is it ?—There were va
rious rumours afloat yesterday in
reference to the visit of Alexander
11. Stephens to the President.—
Some wise-acres asserted that Mr,
Stephens advised Mr, Johnson to
resign, while others again had it
that the distinguished Southerner
only conversed upon matters con
nected with his forthcoming work.
A dispatch from Little Rock,
Arkansas says the elections are
completed in but lew counties.—
Partial returns show a large fall

majority against the Con#tituttion
will be larger than was anticipa
ted. The whites have voted al
most unanimously against it.
