An Extraordinary Creature Eiseovered in
the Forests ot Warren County ! A
Nondescript Animal ot Singular
and Fearful Appearance Kimm
ing at|Lurge
The fallowing extraordinary siory
—which for want of s[ ace we have
been compelled to condense - we
have received from a perfectly re
liable source. About twenty five
miles from this city ; but in this
country, is a small stream known
as Bear Creek, which empties into
the Big Black river. The margin
of both these streams, in that vicin'
ity or miles back is an almost ini'
penetrable swamp, grown up with
eane.brakcs and wild, tangled vit c
but filled w.th all kinds of gams,
including bear, deer, and turkeys.
In pursuit of this game many young
men resort to this spot with their
hounds. For somo time past,
strange stories have been told by
the negroes of an extraordinary
animal seen near these swamp 3
The oogroea, in their usual manner
gave graphic and startling descrip
tions o*' his appearance, hut usual
ly winding up with the declaration
that it was the devil wh eh had
I con seen l>y them. Une peeuli
ity, as described by the negroes,
was that from his tracks he seemed
to be going both ways at once.—
That is, or.e foot pohited to the
front and the other to the rear.,—
’lhese stories were laughod at and
derided by the citizens, no oi.o
lieving in any such statement.--
This extraordinary creaturo had
often suddenly presented himself
among the negroes in iho oarlv
twilight, causing great consterua
lion among them. Ho is described
by the negroes ao being about eight
feet bight, each eye, in their lan
guage, ‘as largo as a hen’s cgg, : -’
wth no nose and no upper lip. his
two eye teeth as largo as a man’.-
thumb extending down over his
chin about eight inches, his right
toot paints dir .ctly to the trout
and the left to the rear, and the
measurement of the tract is j st
twentysthree inches in length : his
finger nails are perfectly hard and
solid, and arc about six inches km*,
the iiair on his head widen is st.tl
and wiry— sweeps the ground as he
walks, and is parted in the rear and
brought down in front on each side
of his singularly formed chest,
which is not round or flat, but is
augular like that of a fowl. The
hair on tue body ol this ‘singular
being is very stiff and grows to the
rear parting at the angle of the
breast bone, growing back and uni
ting with a loug stiff giowth on
his spine which extends back about
one loot like the spinal lin of a fish
or the bristles on the back of a
bour--the hair on his arms is part
od and grows in the same way,
making a long thick brush on the
back ol the arms, extending from
the shoulders to tuo point of his
middle finger , the same peculiari
ty is observable on his legs. This
singular and horrible obiect the
uogrocs represent has been seen oy
them at differeut times for several
month-, and that night has bceu
rendered hideous by the unearthly
howling of this unknown animal.
No white person has ever seen aim
until recently, when i.e was dio.
THE GREENSBORO’ HER ALE.
'* covered by a hunting party. Sev'
oral gentlemen--acquaintanccß of
ours—melon last Thursday week
* with a view of bear limiting in the
| swamp: they were accompanied by
| about fifteen well trained bear
I dogs They prepared for the hunt
early in the morning; and when
1 about coinmeucingj their a'tcntioo
| was attracted to an unusual largr
i human track in the soft soil, upon
examination it was discovered that
the irack wus constantly being re*
versed. In an instant the stories
of the negroes occurred to the par
ty. and at once it was determined
to pursue the creature which had
made this track. The dogs were
instantly called and encouraged to
follow the track, which they did
prompt j. The gentlemen mount
ed upon good horses found but lit
t'e difficulty in keeping well op
with the hound-*. In a few min*
utes an object was presented to
their view which sent a chill to the
heart of every member of the par
ty. They had unearthed the Non
descript, A being—apparently
| human, suddenly aros« from the
lair—turned and lor a moment
stood iu sib nt inspection of his
pursuers, and then instantly, with a
ycil truly terrific, wheeled and
with the speed of the fastest horse
rushed away before the dogs.
This wild and exciting chase
was continued for a distance of
nearly ten miles, when at last the
terr ble monster foam ng with rage
was brought to bay upon the bank
of the Big Black, and turning with
a fury unparalleled, it seized the
oremost dog with both hands and
by the exercise of superhuman mus
cular strength, buried its loug tafa
ons iu the body of the howling
brute aud liteially tore the dog
asunder. Dropping this it instant'
ly seized the next and sent its two
immense tusks through the skull
of the doomed dog, alarmed lor
tho party, drew his revolver and
fired twice at the monster and ev
idently without effect other than
to frighten it by the report, when,
t irning with a hideous yell, it
plunged into the river, diving, and
remaining under water iully five
minutes, when it would suddenly
spring high into the air, screaming
with the voice of a regiment of
soldiers. It finally swam to the
opposite side and disappea cd in
the neighboring forest, since which
time it has only boen seen twice
by white persons. Several at-,
te npts have been made to capture
it, butup to the present time with-]
out success
What this strange creature is,
no one can conjecture. The gen
tleraen with whom we have eon'
versed represent, it as a black man
about six 'eet high, but in other
respects resembling to a great dc'
gree, the description given by the
uegroes.
ll lias broken the negroes from
attending loyal leagues at night in
that section ot couutry.
A Fact,— A young woman
was sent by the milkman to a
family which he supplied, to
see if she could get a situation.
Her family was poor, and she
needed it. The family to
which he sent her was small
and highly respectable, and the
wife and mother had been do
ing all her own work, but ad
ded cares and responsibilities
u duced her to want assistance.
When young mistress came,
she proposed to do chamber
work alone for good round
wages. When asked if she
would cook, if not wash as
her proposed employer had
done ? she replied, with a toss
of her head, that “she did not
know how, she had never been
m a kitchen in her life,’,
No wonder there is so much
suffering and destitution, so
many poor people, when such
ideas prevail. We advise no
young man, be he rich or poor
marry a gi 1, he she rich
or poor, who has never been
in a kitchen in her life, or
hesitates to go there when
she needs employment.
