Notice !
Mr. Henry M- Burns, late of

assumes the editorial chair of this
journal. My connection with the
paper will still continue, but Mr.

editor.
JOHN K.SPENCE
SALUTATORY
With this issue wo assume the
responsibilities of the editorial
chair of the Gbeenesrobo’ Her
ald, and respectfully solicit a share
of patronage commensurate with
our merit.
In entering upon this, onr now
field of labor, wo arc not undmiud
ful of the weighty responsibilities
resting upon us a member of the
editorial Corps. We shall strive
to make the “Herald" a reliable
channel of passing events, and no
pains shall be spared to furnish its
readers with tbo latest and most
reliable intelligence. It will, as
heretofore, contain general miscel-
laneous matter as well as political,
religious and literary news collect
ed from the latest and best sources,
independent in all things allied
only with that party which is stri
ving to promote the public good
by the practice of truth, justice
and moderation. This being our
motto, we cherish the hope that
the ‘‘Herald” will meet with and
receive the patronage of an appro
ving public. Whilst it is our de~
termination to be truQ to the luo-
tional liberty, wo will at the satr.e
time peek to do justice to all class
es’ We will advocate the claims
of the white man in matters per
taining to the Government, believ
ing it to be unwise and dangerous
to invest the negre with the same
political rights that constitution
ally belong to the white man.—
Whatever in our judgment con
duces to the welfare ol our coun
try, .will find in us a warm support.
Devoted with a sincere affection to
our ho ne and people onr highest
aim and proudest ambition will be
to c jncil.a e, so far as in us lie?, the
wHoratiou of our war-stricken
country to its former peaceful and
happy relations under the Consti
tution of our ancestors. The South
is the land of our uativity, and
with all the strength and ability
of which we are possessed will we
defend the rights that are ours by
virtuo of the Constitution anil
laws of the land.
At present there is but t»o po
litical parlies iu the couutrj, Dem
ocratic and Radical, and any in
termediate ground is an evasion of
position. The former is laboring
to save the country from being bu
ried 'beneath the band of resur
rection, the latter to destroy it, to
overthrow the Constitution, to
wring from the hands of intelli
gence the reins of the Government
and place them in the hands ol ig
norance and sycophantic Republi
cans, to pull down the great prin
ciples Ameiica has won
e distinction in the family of the
Nations ot the earth, and set up in
its stead a mongrel centralized
utspotism—-yea. Africanize the
• s 'oufL and destroy the purity ol
onr own race, by abolishing the
distinctions fashioned by the hand
ot God. It is against this party
our course shall be directed.
* v e will not be unmindful o f the
claims that our growing little city
has upon our pen, and whatever
will be likely to add to itsprosper
>ty will not be overlooked.
With this brief sketch of our
prospective course, we enter upon
the discharge ol our duty, loping
tnat the mantle of charity will be
thrown over all our imperfections
by those who are more skilled in
Jhis onr new enterpiise.

f MEETING IN GREENESBORO’ !!

SPEECHES OF
Gen. J VI. (Jordon and
Col R J C’owart-
According to previous aunoune
ineut, Gen. John I>, Gordon, the
Democratic candidate for Govern
or of Georgia, met a large number
'of the ci of Greene and ad
joining counties, at the Court-
House on Saturday last. lion.
Miles W. Lewis introduced tie
[speaker in few spirited and appro
priate remarks, who was received
with long ar.d vociferous cheer#
Gen. Gordon then proceeded t.e
address the assembly- /7e ex press
ed his gratification at mee'iug so
large a number of his fellow coun
trymen, and was assured from their
presence and the interest manifest-1
ed, that the reports he had heard
of their apathy and indifference
was entirely untrue, lie consider
ed the issues now before the people
of vastly deep importance. He
appealed to his fellow-citizens to
rise up in their might and help to
save this grand old commonwealth
from the ruin and disgiace ihat
the Radical party wore bringing
it to. His speech was directed
principally to the colored people.
He read extracts from Helper’s
Book, end showed therefrom Yan
kee inconsistency and deception.—
He did not, like Helper, want the
negroes removed from the country
and exterminated, but was will
ing to take up arms aud defend
themagiinst any party North or
South that sought to kill and de
stroy them. He told them to go
to the polls and voto like freemen,
and not be deceived by low, de
signing men, but to vote for the
men of their choice.
The General was listened to
throughout with rapt attention,
and tears could be seen trickling
down many a manly check, when
he so feelinglj alluded to our past
and present condition.
After Gen. Gordon had conclu
ded his speech, the Hon. u. J.
Cowart, of Atlanta, was loudly
called for, and he responded in one
of his happiest efforts, clear, forci
ble, logical and to the point. He
afevrVrrrtoe*l-trre rrutsK rVoTITf
the hideous features of Radicalism
and exposed them in all their de
formity, convincing all who beard
him of the evil tendeuey of its
wicked domination. J/is whole
speech was repleto with sound
sense and wholesome doctrine, aud
was received with great enlhusi'
asin, and every Democrat present
felt that it was good to be there,
for his laitli was renewed and
nerves strengthened to do battle
for the great principles of his par
ty. All the people want is to un
derßtaud the importance and mag
u-tude of the question upon which
they will soon be called to pass
their judgment, to to answer their
utter condemnation and repudia
tion of the infamous measures
sought to bo imposed upon them
by bad men for selfish and vain
glorious purposes.
Saturday was a grand jolification
clay in Grecnesboro’ among the
Democrats, after listening to the
stimulating speeches of Gen. Gor
don and Col. Cowart, we believe
every man determined fiom that
day hence to go to work and
help to save the State.
