Heavy Business.— The Georgia
llailroad, says the Atlanta Consti »
tution, is doing a very heavy
freight business at present. The
receipts for September will nearly
reach 8120,000. No road can
boast of more courteous conduc
tors.
Bis?"We call attention to the
new advortisement of Mr. B.
Johnson in this paper.
•©““Our energetic and industrious
friend, Mr. Alex. Tappan. will please
receive our thanks for a half bushel of
Apples, delivered at this office on Mon
day last. We understand that Mr-
Tappan has an unusually large orchard,
completely laden with the golden fruit.
Some of the trees, it is said, will yield
twenty bushels. Our merchants who
deal in fruits, will do well to purchase
largely of these apples, as they are
large, perfectly sound, and wil! keep
good during the winter.
New Advertisements.
Bargaint for the Million. —We call
attention to the Card of E. Solomons,
who has just opened anew Dry Goods
and Clothing Store 159 Broad Street,
Augusta, Ga. This is anew firm who
have recently, but permrnently opened
their business and are determined to es
tablish for themselves a reputation for
selling durable and cheay goods.
Porter Fleming a- CO., Grocers and
Commission Merchants, 268 Broad
Street, Augusta, Ga. We take pleasure
in recommending to the planters of
Greene and surrounding counties, this
well anu favorably known business
house. As business men they are not
to be excelled, and their low rates for
storage and selling certainly entitles
them to a liberal share of patronage.^
James A. Gray and Cos., Wholesale
and Retail Dry Goods Store, 228 Broad
Street, Augusta. Ga. Os the many
first class Dry Goods houses, we doubt
if there is one that possesses greater fa
cilities for guaranteeing bargains. From
personal experience, we are enabled to
speak knowingly of the extraordinary
inducements offered by this house. Be
ing emphatically a cheap store, it is not
to be wondered that the gentlemanly
and obliging proprietors and polite sales
men are kept constantly busy in wait
ing upon the numerous customers who
besiege them in quest of genuine goods.
In addition to their retail trade, they
do an extensive jobbing business thro’-
out the country. Our country mer
chants and friends would do well to
make a note of this.
Christopher Gray , 242 Broad St-r.,
Augusta, Ga. It is with no small de,
gree of pleasure that we call attention
of our readers to the advertisement of
this house. We k»ow of no firm in
Augusta that we can speak of with
more pride, or that we would more rea.
dily recommend to our Greene county
friends. The proprietor, Mr. Gray,
though a Southern man is living in New
York, the great head-center of the Dry
Goods market, where he can watch the
market and purchase his goods at the
very lowest figures—this is a privilege
not enjoyed by every Southern mer
chant —therefore he is enabled to com
pete with any house, in every respect
south of Baltimore. The polite aud
(Courteous attention which every cus
tomer receives at this house, is still an
other commendable feature. We ask
,our friends, visiting Augusta, to stop in
at this house and judge for themselves.

I have just returned from New

A Fine Church in Ashes.
It is with extreme regret and the
deepest sorrow that we announco to
the public the destruction by fire on
Monday night last, of the Presbyte
rian Church in this city. It was
one of the finest Church buildings
which we have evere seen in a town
so small as ours, and had been erec
ted with taste and great expense.
This loss falls heavily on the con
gregation of the Church and has
cast a gloom over our whole com
munity. We are sorry to say that
circumstances strongly proclaim it
the work of an incendiary. The
fire broke out about ten o’clock at
night, when every building was
damp from a recent rain, and first
made its appearance near the top
of the Cupola of the Church. There
had been no night service in the
building for the past few days, and
a prayer meeting had been held in
it at 5 o’clock P. M. on of
the fire. The colored man who at
tends to the sweeping and lighting
the Church, is a man of good char
acter and positively asserts that he
had left no matches in the building
and had used no fire or lights in
the Cupola. We hope that every
man in our community will interest
himself in endeavoring to find out
the guilty party, that he may be
made to suffer the penalty of his
crime. May the Lord have mercy
on the wretch who is so lost to all
that is honest, noble and good, as
to commit such a sacrilege.
A id:AiT FIGHT
On the 28th ultimo, Professor Wy
man, the tenrlil-renowned (?) Magician,
who was never, in this city, surpassed,
as a humbug, not even by the ‘"Fakir of
Siva," paid us a visit, and posted his
bills advertising one of bis wonderful
performances to come off on the evening
of that day, at the Town Hall. By
some mysterious means, it seems that
the Professor and his bills did not seem
to favorably impress our people. The
hour arrived at which the performance
was announced to commence, and to the
chagrin and mortification of the Profes
sor, and to the credit of our communi
ty, a very small audience was in atten
dance. The bell rang, the curtain rose,
and the great Magician made his ap
pearance on the stage, somewhat resem
bling,
“The Last Rose of Summer left bloom
ing alone,
When all its companions had withered
and gone.”
llis first trick was a dead failure
and warmly loudly was he hissed
by his audience. The Professor’s mot
to being “ AT? desperandum,” lie was
not to be discouraged by om failure; so
‘die picked his flint and tried it again.”
The second trick was performed in so
bungling a manner that the evidences
of dissatisfaction on the part of his au
dience became louder and more demon*
strative. The Professor who, no doubt,
‘■had seen tin Elephant ” on more than
one occasion during his professional ca
reer, could not be mistaken when he
heard the animals roar; and well know
ing the disposition of the beast, he be
gan to look around him for the means of
escape. After attempting several other
tricks and 'failing in all. the Elephant
became so enraged as to become ungov
ernable, and with one blast of his breath
extinguished all the lights. Then it
was that the great Magician exhibited
a specimen of “tail walking ," which
was truly wonderful as well as amusing.
He made his exit from the llall, leav
ing all his paraphernalia and his audi
ence in the dark, and ran at a 240
speed until he reached his quarters at
the hotel, where, locking his room door
he gave himself up to reflection. But
his misfortunes were not to end here,
for at an hour when grave yards yawn,
and ghosts walk abroad, one lloss, a
brother humlatg in the same line of bu
sinces, it is rumored, entered Town lla'l
without a key, and selected from the
Wizard’s implements of trade, such ar
ticles as he required to complete his
outfit. The following morning the
Professor finding hi,' property missing,
swore out a search warrant against
Ross, whom he charged with the theft.
By way of retaliation, Ross brought an
action against Wyman for slander.—
Here was a chance for our astute young
lawyers, and well did they avail them
selves of it. After the legal gentlemen
had poeketed five V’s each; Wyman’s
o-oods found in a perfect state; bonds
iriven for appearance at Court, the cur
tain dropped until to-day. when a more
searching examination will take place.
New Paper.— The West Point
Shield, the first number of which
we received by Monday s Mail,
published by Messre Sharpe &
Longly, West Point Ga., It is a
28 col. weekly handsomely printed
and ably Edited and does credit to
that thriving little city. It is just
such a paper as West Point has
! long been in need of, may the
‘Shield’ live long, and grow bright
er as it grows older.
STILL THEY COME
A few days since, wo were call
ed on by a gentleman, with whose
appearance and conversation, we
were much pleased, “Sir,” &aid lie,
addressing himself to the writer,
‘I am from Cleveland, Ohio, 1
read the letter of Dr, Janes which
was published in tlio New York
Tribune, and was so favorably im
pressed with his description of
Middle Georgia, as well as with his
plain and straightforward manner
in describing it, that lat once
concluded that it was just such a
country as I would like to live in.
Iu a few days thereafter, with car
pet-bag in hand I was on my way
to Georgia, to see for myself. /
arrived in Greenesboro’ a few days
since, and have boon examining
the country around, aud am so
much pleased, that I have conclud
ed to purchase me a home, at which
to pass the remainder ol my days.
I liavo two daughters, sir, both of
whom are skillful type setters, and
the object of my visit to you this
morning, is to soe if you can give
them employment next winter in
your office.”
The above incident should con
vince our citizens ol how much
j good can be done, with but little
' labor, and induce others to follow
j Dr. Janes’ example. The columns
; of the Herald aro open to all such
j correspondence.
