COMB IN I!i:.u TII’I I, DREAMS
TIY GEORGE P. PRENTTCE.
Como, in beautiful dreams, love,
Oh ! come to me oft,
When the light wings of sleep
Oil my bosom lie soft;
C'h ! come when the sea
In the moon's gentle light
Beats soft on the air,
Like the pulse of the night—
When the sky anikhc wave
Wear their loftiest blue,
When the dew's on the flower,
And the star’s ou the dew.
Couie, in beautiful dreams, love,
Oh ! come and we'll stray
Where the whole year is crowned
With the blossoms of May—
Where each sound is as sweet
As the coos of a dove,
And gales are as soft
As the breathings of love :
Where the beams kiss the waves,
And the waves kiss the beach,
Ami our warm lips may catch
The sweet lessous they teach.
Come, in beautiful dreams, love,
Oh ! come and we’ll fly
Like two winged spirits
Os love through the sky;
With hand clasped in hand
On our dream wings we’ll go
Where the starlight and moonlight
Are bending their glow;
And on the bright clouds we 11 lingor )
Os purple and gold,
’Till the angels shall envy
The Bliss they behold.*
An Interview between
<IEN. SHERMAN AND MRS. DU. WALNBR
The presence of M rs. Dr. WaU
ker at the Woman’s Convention,
renews the recollection of an in
terview which took place between
that somewhat remarkable person
and Gee. Sherman, at Atlanta, du
ring the war, and several w r ceks
after the city had been captured. By
some means, known only to the
mysteries of the lemaio mind, the
woman doctor had been able to
avoid the order forbiddieg any of
her sex to enter the city, and with
a degree of perseverance peculiar
ly her own, she walked into the
private room of Gen. Sherman,
and demanded a commission in the
medical department of the army.
The fact is not publicly known,
but Gen. Sherman is weak when a
woman is concerned—that is to
say, he would run rather than have
hard words with one of them ; and
the tears of a female rebel had
more terror to his soul than a
thousand Beauregards. So, when
the little doctor renewed again
and again her demand for an ap
pointment, the General, 1 iko a
great soldier, as he is, changed
tactics in the face of the enemy.
“Why don’t you wear proper
clothing ? That toggery is neith
er one thing nor the other,” said
the General, as ho pointed his fin
ger to the nondescript garb of the
doctor.
y “Well, General,” replied the
young woman, “I suppose you
would like to seo me in hoops, am]
heavy skirts dragging down my
hips, to the destruction of health
and comfort? What right, sir.
havo women, who bear children,
thus to destroy their best powers
and unlit themselves to bo wives
and mothers ?”
This, and much more she said
about woman’s reforms.
The conqueror of Atlanta was
somewhat taken aback by this
charge of horse, foot and daagoons
but he picked up courago.
“Did you ever bear any chil
dren?” ho asked, with sardonic
emphasis.
She had to admit that she bad
not done anything of the kind.
The General added severely ;
‘‘l don’t know that / should es
pecially desire to see you, hoops
or no hoops; nor do 1 see any need
that wemen should be injured by
wearing them, or the moderate use
of the costume of the day; but I
do know for a certainty that you
and such as you put on that dress 1
from affectation. If you wish an
example of what a woman should
be and ought to do—damnation.”
cried the General, getting excited,
“what are you here for any how ?
Breeches or no breeches, tne Pre
sident’s wile would not dare to dis
obey orders. Put on decent clothes
go back to Nashville, enter the
hospitals where our poor Lots are
dying of wounds and lever, and
imitate the example of women in
hoops aud petticoats, who are de
voting their time to the work o ;
nursing.”
We think Mrs. Dr. H’ulket
went North upon an early train.—

SALT FOR THE THROAT
An exchange says : ‘-In these
days when diseases of the
throat prevail, and particularly a
dry, hacking cough, which is no;
only distressing to ourselves but to
those with whom wo are brought
into business contact, those thus af
llictcd may be benefitted by trying
the following remedy ; Last fall
wo were induced to try what virtue
there was in common salt.
commenced by using it three times
a day—morning, noon and night.
We dissolved a largo tablespoonful
of common salt in about half a tum
blerful of cold water, and with this
we gargled the throat most effectu
ally, just before meal time. The
result has been that during the win
ter wo were not only free from the
usual coughs and colds to which,
as far as our memory extends, we
have always been subject, but the
dry', hacking cough has entirely
disappeared. Wo attribute it-en
tirely to tho salt gargle, and do
most cordially recommend it to
those of our readevs who arc subject
to disease of the throat.”
Literature in tlio South
All Southern men and women
with the proper feelings of self
respect. should be deeply interest'
ed in the efforts which are now be
ing made throughout the South to
develop her native literary talent,
and to build up a literature, thro'
which her past history shall be
vindicated from all the obloquy
which is now being heaped upon it,
and whereby Southern thought and
Southern civilization shall be ade
quately represented in the arena
of the modern world. But strange
as it may appear, there prevail a
remarkable apathy and indiffer* j
euco on tho part of the great mass
of the population to all literary
projects, which can scarcely bo ao
| counted lor on grounds creditable
to Southern character. The r cdi-
I tors of the South, as a body, have
perhaps done what they could to
dispel this indifference, and to
arouse the peoplo to the impera
tive necessity of fostering native
enterprise, if they wish to preservo
inviolate the sacred honor of their
dead, and to bequeath a heritage
of liberty to their children.
The “New’ Eilcct’c Jl/diinzine.’g
which hits now been in ex is ten e
for three years, and with which
lias recently been incorporated
“The Lund We Lovo.” stands at
the head of the list of Southern
publications. At this period of
the year, when persons nro in the
habit of choosing their periodicals
for the winter, it is especially re
quested of the public that they be
stow a part at least ol their pa
tronage upon a periodical publish
ed in their interest, and which, the
Southern and the Northern press
both being the judges, is the peer
of any magazine published in
America,—both in its literary stan
dards and the quality and attme
tivoness of ita typography—Rich
mond Enquirer.
Women and Adversity
Women should bo more trusted and
confided in as wives, mothers and
sisters. They have a quick precep
tion of right and wrong, and with
out, always knowing why, read the
present and future read character
istics and acts, designs and proba
bilities, where man sees no letter
or sign. What else do we mean by
the adage “mother wit.” save that
woman has a quicker perception
and readier invention than man ?
llow often when man abandons tho
helm in despair, woman seizes it
and carries the home ship through
the storm ! Man often tlies from
home ami family to avoid impend
ing poverty or ruin. Woman sel
dom if ever forsook home thus.—
Woman never evaded mere tempo
ral calamity by suicide or desertion.
The proud banker, rather than to
live to see his poverty gazetted,
may blow out his brains and leavo
wife and children to want, protcc
torless. Loving woman would
have counselled him to accept pov
erty, and live to cherish his family
and retrieve his fortune. Woman
should bo counselled and confided
in. It is the beauty and glory of
her nature that it instinctively
grasps at and clings to the truth
and right. Hensons, man's great
est faculty, takes time to hesitate
before it decides; but woman’s in
stinct never hesitates in its decis
ion, and it is scarcely ever wrong
where it has even chances with
reason. Women feels where man !
thinks, acts where ho deliberates, !
hopes where ho despairs, and tri
umphs where lie fails.
