G O’clock Closing—City Merchants. 1875 —Spring Stock—McCall, Ccpelun A Co.’s Carpets, Oil Cloths, Mattings, etc.—Wm. A. Our personal acquaintance with Mr Haygood warrants us is commending him to the patronage of our people. To the Codies, At tlie large and well-filled establishment of Messrs. McCall, Ci.pelan & Cos., Miss GRASSWITII will have her opening of Spring ITats and Fancy Goods, on next Monday and Tnesdav, 10th and zeut inst., to which all are cordially invited. liarnlaart <& Kisnbrouffli Can furnish the ladies of all apes with hats and (beaux) bows to suit the most fastidious. April 555111. At the suggestion of our city papers a number of the ladies of Grecneshoro’ met at the Court House on last Monday after noon to arrange for the proper observance of the 25th, Decoration Day. 11. G. Lewis, I'sq., a young and talented member of our bur. was unanimously elect ed to deliver the memorial address. Heretofore the arrangement of floral decorations has been entrusted to commit tees, this year, as we understand, for cer tain good reasons, the committees have been dispensed with, and the duty of ar ranging garlands, etc., for the occasion, will devolve upon heads of families. This is probably best, as it will silence any com plaint that might otherwise arise. In our next issue we will publish a pro gramme of the exercises tor the occasion. Coiiiituiriim, Barnhart A Kimbrough offer specia' in ducements in millinery ami fancy goods to all the ladies who examine their superb rstock and answer the followingeonundrum: What net will catch a woman ? Hon. A. 11. Stephens* I.etter. With this issue we have the pleasure of laying before our readers an able letter from our immediate Representctive in Con gress, Hon. A. 11. Stephens, in response to certain strictures of tlie Savannah Morn ing News upon his course iu the last Con gress. A censorious press lias cast many unjust aspersions upon this great man. Even, in some instances, going so far as to assail the purity of his intentions and question the aincerity his patriotism. This letter is a complete vindication of his course, and clearly demonstrates the wisdom of his statesmanship. We are truly glad Mr. .Stephens has written it, and we invite our readers to its careful perusal. —■ 71 cl all, Copclan A Cos. We call the especial attention of our readers to the two column advertisement of the above Firm, in to-day's paper. Read it, go and examine for yourselves, and then lifyou are not suited in quality and prices, you can go farther and fair worse. On Monday anil Tuesday next, Miss Gkass with will display her exquisite taste in her Spring opening of Hats and Fancy Novel ties, and we are sure our ladies will avail themselves of the opportunity. IVot Tlorc, bill Better Xews papers. Under the above caption the Savannah Morning News suys: “We find (he follow ing chunk of wisdon in the Rome Courier.” In speaking of the newspaper business of our State it says: “ And yet we find in many of Ihe villages of Georgia as many ns two newspapers barely r subsisting by the aid of a sheet printed upon one side furn.sbed from a distance at a nominal price. With these and * a man and a boy ’ the work of these •patent outsides’ are thrown out as news papers to be patronized. Our judgment is, that where the business of a tow.i is not sufficient to have its local paper primed en tirely at home, there is no necessity for its publication. This we say with all respect to the opinions and practices of others of different minds.” Brother Willingham is a little rough on "patent outsides,” but we believe the chastisement which he inflicts is deserved. Georgia papers should be published “in ,toto” in Georgia, or not all. —• g&m The Display Of millinery and fancy goods at Burn hart & Kimbrough’s is beautiful beyond description. J. M, Storey & llro.. Are Agents for the sale of “Logan’s Cel ebrated Compound.” This compound is recotr mended by the Georgia State Agri cultural Society, as being the best and cheapest Fertilizer used. Six Hundred pounds of the compound will make one Ton—the cost is sl3 50 at the works. High priced Fertilizers have mined the planters. They will now have an opportunity to buy at prices which will pay them. All Editor Shot. On Monday evening last, Mr. J. R. Chris tian, editor of the Sparta Times & Tlanter, was shot by a Mr. F. A. Butts. Butts went into Mr. Christiah’s office and insulted him, whereupon Christian knocked him down. Butts arose, drew a pistol and shot Chris tian through the arm. A warrant was is sued for the arrest of Butts. i—i •■ mm \o Hoys. It seems that there are no hoys nowa days who wish to avail themselves of a good trade. The Sparta Times & Planter and the Jasper County Banner have been adverti-ing for apprentices to the printing art for several weeks and as yet have ob tained none. But we presume there are no l/oi/3 in this our day and generation. •mm m mm Proceedings of I lie County Hoard ol’ Education. The I.site ReeCiitg of*tlie Geor gia Kaili'oail directors in Augusta. We clip the following regarding the late tract meet ng of the Georgia Railroad Di rectors, front the Atlanta Herald : For some time past it has been known that the Directors of the Georgia Railroad were determined to reduce their expendi tures, and that some prompt and decisive action was going to be taken for the fur therance of this object. About three weeks since, they discharg ed all of their baggage masters and requir ed the conductors to do the duty of the bag gage master in conjunction with their own duties. Subsequently, they reduced the wages of all the employes of the road 12} per ct. on the dollar, and curtailed their expenses in othei ways. The matter was considered so desperate that one of the Directors ottered a resolu tion in o.ien convention, proposing to sus pend all the trains on the road for thirty days. This resolution was seriously con siilered and after considerable discussion, the resolution was voted down, as much complaint was made by the employes about the reduction of wages to ante bellum prices. On Tuesday the Directors of the t oad met in Augusta, and after a tedious session of two days they decided to reduce the f.tre on the roaci to ante bellum prices. The passenger rate adopted by the con vention takes effect on the Ist of June, and is as follows : OUTWARD TRAINS. Before adjournment they passed a reso lution authorizing the purchase of the Western Railroad as an equal partner with the Central Railroad. The object of the purchase is to save themselves on bonds they have indorsed for that road. The action of the Board was made in se cret, but. we got the above information from one of the Directors.
