Of course our people apprehended an approaching tornado, and manifested considerable alarm. The Female School adjourned to a neighboring residence, the Principal of Ihe Male Academy, with Ids pupils, sought refuge in an old cistern, and several of the clerks stored themselves away in (lark corners of their employers’ rebars. After a few moments of dread anx iety on the part of our citizens, the cloud passed rapidly over and the bright sunshine brought joy to troubled hearts. We learn that a considerable whirlwind passed through the eastern suburbs of our city, blowing down a fence or two and throwing a gentleman from his buggy. No set ions damage resulted. A \en iiOtlgc. Dear Herald: While the ‘ Spell lug Bee” oQJast Friday evening was a success, we were sadly disappointed that ilie older citizens of the coininun ity look tin part. However, we have no right to coutpla'n, as they were en gaged in a holy mission—at work 1 love—that of gathering up and distri buting supplies to our fellow citizens who suffered from the tornado the previous week. At an early hour ,|uitc a number of auditors assembled ,n the Chapel and impatiently awaited the ceiling's entertainment. “ West uhe’ 3 000 practice words” was adopt ed as the authority for the correctness <d the spelling. It was announced that after missing a word the person so mi.-s ing must retire from the class unless the privilege ot remaining was pur chased ai the nominal sum of five cents. Glasses id twelve each, led by GapUtns <V. Rives and K Hardin, were then arrayed for the orthographical conflict, the tocsin was suuuded and the contest began. * R. W. Ihe occasion was very enjoyable, I hope it will be re peated. Considerable sieknoss is reported in this lie glib ohood — it is eoC fined most ly to children. An hour ago Death passed this way and a delicate sweet little flower drooped and Withered un der its chilly breath. More anon. Yours truly, Novice. The lis|tlay Of millinery ami fancy goods at Barn hart & Kimbrough’s is beautiful beyond descri pi ion. A remarkable case of somnambulism occurred at Murfrnesborn’.Tenn., a few evenings since. One of the young lady Students of ihe W. F. College during the night got up Iroui the hed, threw over herself a loose wrapper and start id down town. She went into Colonel Vaughan’s residence, and into bis room and laid on a lounge. It greatly sur prised and frightened the Colonel, .though he knew something wits wrong, and did not molest tlie “sleeping beau ty ” Soon Rev. W. 6 Starr was in formed where the girl was and went after her. He took her back to the bed-room and eseoneed her in hed, and left the room. The young lady, on awakening next uio-ning, knew noth ing of where she had perambulated or anything about her n net lira I visit. A curious law in New Hampshire is that where there are three hundred and fifty persons residing in unsettled sections, they can form themselves into n town and elect a Representative to the Legislature, and the Ogdensburg Journal says that at the recent Slate election a gang nf seven hundred la borers on the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad divided and formed two towns, and with less than ninety voters, elected two Democratic Representative®. There.is a class of birds that can and ought to be shot —hawks, crows, and a few others; but there is a class of really useful ones that ought to be protected and cared for. They inhabit our groves, orchards and yards—build their nests and rear their young ones, and by their merry chattering and beautiful songs, make us all happy. They serve a valuable purpose too, in tak ing up the worms, bugs and insects that infest our yards and gardens, and are no doubt the means of health and comfort to the place. They' give an air of cheerful ness to our homes, and are many times the solacers of our sorrows. We would be glad to know that every parent had Iried to instil these sentiments into the minds and hearts of his children. We have been led to these remarks by hearing ihe subject presented to our Sab bath School a few days ago, by a worthy aud faithful teacher. The II- B.’s Again. When we penned our local week before last on the grave yard, and referred to the M. tj.’s, we did not intend it to he taken so seriously. Your correspondent, latros, seems to take it in sober earnest, and pro ceeds to give us a regular lecture on what he terms a slander and an untruth. We are sorry lie feels aggrieved, for we have the very highest respect for the medical profession, and are willing to accord to it all lie claims. We admit that the life of a physician is a hard one, mentally and phyicallv We admit, ns he says, that he is the last one paid, if at all, and in many cases grudgingly at that. We admit that much of hi time and money are spent in study, lectures and out-fits. He rides his horses down and has to replace them at heavy cost. His buggy sometimes breaks down, perhaps has done so recently. All these things we admit, and more. Mead mil that lie is essential in Ihe community (if he understands his business) and de serves the gratitude of us all. We deny, however, both the untruth and slander. Our local was true in t-.wo par ticulars. and inferentiaUy in the third. first Our community teat remarkably healthy. Second—The graves were newly made up, and in many respects looked like new ones, and thereby tlte inference is that they carried to the mind, disease and the probability of practice and fees. So what we said lightly, and more as a bit of humor, was the truth aftfer all. Your corre spondent thinks that physicians ought io have ree'ing syelle as he terms them, as well as people in oilier business. We ad mit that too. Tired nature needs rest. We all feel the necessity for it. But physi cians sometimes are troubled with chronic resting spells, and we all know flow such complaints affect the mind atyd temper. tVe hope your correspondent is tot of that class. We hope we have set ourselves right be fore the M. D.’s and that they are satisfied that we are friends and not slanderers of their worthy and self-sacrificing profes sion.
