Not Summer l et,
We have never known old winter so
loathe to resign his seapker to the gentle
goddess spring. For nearly a week past the
temperature has been tematkahly low for
the season, —the nights disagreeably cold,
and it would have required hut little coax
ing to have induced “Jack Frost” to giye us
a “pop call.”
McCall, i'opelan & Cos.
With a truly Chrixtiun spirit, have irroat
lp reduced the price of their Ladies Dress
Goods. They are determined never to be
called to account for refusing to “feed the
hungry” or “c'othe the naked.” As will
be seen fr >m consultii g their Special Col

inducements in Dress Goods, etc. The la

Carpets, Oil Cloths, Mattings.
We had the pleasure, last week, of a vis
it to the extensive Carpet house of Messrs.
.Jas. G. Bailie & Bro., of Augusta. We
were surprised to see such a large slock of
beautiful Carpets, Mattings, Curtains,
Shades, etc., and to find them so cheap.—
Messrs. Bailie * Bro. are honorable gen
tlemen and worthy the patronage of our
people. Their business Card appears in
this number of our paper—read it.

The Bee.
According to announcement the “ Bee ”
returned to our city on last Tuesday
night ami attracted quite a crowd of young
and old to the Floral Hall. The spelling
was a success taken ns nn exercise—but
•las ! only on,, succeeded, all the rest fell
victims to hard words. Mrs. Walter
Griffin took the first prize— a cake,' 1 and
Mrs. Greene bore off the tin cup. The
prizes were presented in the happy style
common to W. H. Branch, Esq*. and Dr.
W. L. M. Harris. The Strawberry Festival
added greatly .to the occasion. The enter
tainment was a success and all left the
hall with thanks <to rite “Bee” for buzzing.

Crops.
From inquiries instituted Inst year nnd
continued this, in relation to the area cttl
tivated by each of twenty f arn iers of our
county in the respective crops, we are en
abled to make a tolerably correct estimate
(taking the information thus elicited ns
duta upon which to calculate) of the area
devoted to the different crops this year as
compared with last. We find the following
result :
Increase in Cotton over last year, 4"P ot.
Increase in Corn over last year, f* ct.
Increase in Wheat over last year, 30 "p c .
Increase in Oats over last year, 4 ct.
While the proportion of cereals planted
as compared with that of cotton is much
less than it should he. it is encouraging to
see that our farmers are beginning to ap
preciate the groat difference in the cost of
making bread at home and buying it from
the West.
All Omen.

Peak Herald: —
The Railroad Convention at Aligns
ta, last week interested quite a nutn
l er of the boys of our town
who availed themselves of the
opportu. ity to make a visit to that
beautiful city. It is amusing to hear
their ace, runt of the trip. Some who
put up at the Globe, were making dil
igent inqnijy for “Mr. Globe.” that
they might form his acquaintance. —
Another left his lttneh at the Post'
.Office to be cared for. One wanted “to
<o, to the g.rave-yurd Yause that wa
what he come to Augusty for.” An
other had a dispute with a saleswoman
with regard to her wares, threatening
to go home and get them cheaper in
Greenesboro’. But they became worn
out with sightseeing at last, and got
aboard the train for home. Sleep over
came them, aud they were oblivi us to
the fact they had reached the Point
where they were to change cars. Mor
pheus still had full sway. Some were
aroused at Greenesboro’ and dropped ;
others continued their sleep to Madi
son and Covington. We felt some
uneasiness for them, but finally all
readied home safe, aud the older citi
z:ds reported that they had been “good
boys and behaved themselves.” l’hcy
seem in fine spirits and ready for schoo*.
We nope to he able to hear some ol
them "hold forth” on Friday evening
next. The Frnl. y evening’s ei-TCis-s
are not without interest and call to
gether quite a number of those whi
led disposed to encourage b"th teach
ers and pupils by their presence.

Commendable.
Farniets are sticking very closely to their
business in our section. It is seldom von
see ora of them in the village, except on
business, which is much to their credit
They report their hired labor better this
year than usual. We think it must he,
judging from the smaller number of loung
ers on our streets. They als > report their
crops in good condition generally, but back
ward. Do we not see the germs of pros
perity in this ?
Shooting AHttir-

Jim Boss (colored.) They are employed
on the, farm of Capt. Smith, and have been
inimical lor some time. Jones was
shot in the head and face, some thirty

doubtful. The cause of the shooting is
said to be jealousy—-negro like. The ar

Personal,.— We have had quite a num

seem to he very much pleased with the nat

They are certainly very pretty just now.

Dull. —Business is dull among our mer
chants just now. There is very little dis
position to buy, except iu such articles as
should be raised and sold by our own com
munity. This is not prosperity.
Query.— Who are the ladies of the
“blue stocking” class, to whom the tditor
of the “Home Journal” refers? We have
asked our bro. Local, hut lie said lie didn’t
know. He thinks that as far as he has been
able 10 see, the article mentioned presents a
snowy, rather than a “cerulean tint.”
Mfsixos.-- We saw the Local of the
“Home Journal,” a few days ago, sitting on
a box with legs hanging down, and his face
buried in his hand*, coaxing an idea. He
jumped up pretty soon, smiting* com
placently. Weghal! likely know whftthat
idea was in his next issue. Perhaps lie was
thinking of his mishaps of last week—he
might have been thinking of a bridle or
harness, idee voting lady, or soraethiilg of
the kind.
