Anew theory in (ho physiology
of tho wheat plant has been pro
posed, embracing anew fact in re
lation to its ability to send out new
offset from tbo kernel wben deep
planted, after fflc ef3c or surface
roots are destroyed by frost, acci
dent, br insects. An observing
farmer of our acquaintance has
comclo that conclusion by finding
that wheat which was ploughed in,
or even deeply set 'with the grain
drill, recovered ir. the Spring, after
having been completely Winter
Killed and blown away from its
plactf of growth.
So satisfied was he of the fact,
that he last Fall tried the experi
ment of planting a cettaiq number
of grains at tbo respect wMlqrrhs of
3, •}-, a, and G inches, which, after
Coming up, and getting three or
four bihdes, ho cut off, and a few
dnyia since, exhibited to us, as ho
did some that wero eaten off by the
wire-worm, which had a set of roots
about the kernel, and had started a
new and fresh sprout of half an
inch in length, that apparently
would increase, and next Spring,
show tiio surface-
The examples shown us had two
fetts of rtulkhs, omside roots,! one
at the kernel* and one at the surface
attached to a small bulbous-formed
knob, and opt of which grows the
future 3t')ol3 a cra;ffte' . They wero
connected by a slender stipm, w-Jnih
wa3 thar onglnal Plumule of the
plant, and which was ir some cases
loti 11 green, and in those destroyed
by tho worm, dead; yot they all ex
hibited a fresh sprout at the kernel,
apparently but a few days old.
It has long been said that wheat
ploughed iiq would stand tho Win
ter better than when sown l-rond
cist; and it is, asserted, and wo ba
lievo admitted, that wheat sown by
the drill is not near as much affect
ed by frost, as when slightly cover-'
od by tho ordinary process.
Now if this tendency of wheat
when, bowii deep to send out two
roots, tinll wlien tlfe upper
ones tiro destroyed to throw out a
new sprout at the bottom ones from*
tho 'kernels, is so, it is a discovery
of the greatest importance—especi
ally to this wheat-growing region,
where, ns in nil now counties, it is
found that the cutting down the
forests, and clearing up tho land,
causes the Winters to become more
( opon and unsteady, and tho in
creasing prevalence of insects
would seeuv t@ indicate the neces
sity of doepjcovenng o! the seed,
to protect it against freezing out, ’
or other accidents, and ensure its
coming again in tho Spring.
;i) Them Fust,
Many ol the following examples
for practice in articulation are old,
but still not altogether worn out.
Some of our younger readers
will probably play “twist-thc
