M3IU CULTURAL HnKty Conclusions from Ini* l.crlcct U\iH‘i'imoiit<t I nwiKc. There are a few subjects in connec tion with the cultivation of whe-it that I regard as very important. One ol importance is the preparation of ihe seed wheat, before it is sowed, in order !o cleanse it thoroughly from all filth, mi porfc-e.l grains, and fungi spores, as smut, <Ste. To accomplish this, my in variable rule is to wash all seed when 1 ihe day before it is sowed in salt and water, or brine, made strong enough to hear an egg. The wheat is poured int a barrel about half full of brine and is stirred and rubbed wiih the bands, and us the filth, imperfect grains, &c., rise to the surface, they are carefully skimmed off. The wheat is then taken ou'. (if •or pouring the brine off into anoihe harrd.) and i spread until it is dr> enough to sow. which is usually the ease the next day Another matter which I regard of some importance in seeding the wheat, when it i to he sowed hr adeast. is to snake a scam fer the reception of the wheat, with a double hovel plough Y\ hen he wheat is seeded in th ; s wiv. it falls into tin seams an ) is covered by the harrow so well thnt when i ( comes up it look- al - e.xaetlv ns if it had been drilled and iu my oh-ervati n succeeds as well as “dri ling/’ and far hotter than ha - rowing in the wheat. It is especial!' npplivahle to the thorough see ing o* hillsides and slopes, w ith western ex posttres. Another subject nfimpor a net* to he considered in the cu t vation, of wheat, is the influence of exposure on these hill-sides and slopes; whether t*. the north, south east or west fhe southern and eastern exposures h.v long beeti regarded as those most favor able, wh’le the northern and western are unfavorable. The eastern and southern slopes are the fir-t foeatell (hr rays of the morning sun. and are the least exposed to the influence nt th cold winds from the north and west which prevail in the wi ter an I spring. It is on 'his account that ‘‘land sloping to the east will have good wheat grow ing on it. while other parts of the same fieid that slope to the westward will he ruined.’’—Southern Ojilttvufor.
