Tlie results of recant State elections
have hnd a tendency to disp : rit the De
mocracy of the country and diminish
their hopes r>r a trnmph nf plod gov
ernment in the "rest Pentenmal Con
test nf next year We can see n
special pause for dejection; in fael after
reading tlie following (Vo* the Con
stitutionalist, which we consider a fair
atatement nf the ene, we are eneonragi-d
tn hope that, provided the Democracy
steer clear nf the breakers which en
-ulfcd their prospects in 1872, and
make a square fitrhf on principle in
187f>. right will triumph and good
government he restored. Tn speeulnt
ing upon the result of the Presidential
elerfrion of next year the Conjtitutiona
•lfHt says:
Now that every important election
'pending the votp for President has been
held we have accurate data upon which
to hase calculations as tn the true re

the matter disp.-...innately and try and
see accurately and truth r ully which

Nearly all the horses in Columbus'
have the epizootic in a mild form. W e
see in the papers th t the speediest way
to cure the. epizootic and make a Imrse
h roughy happy is to give him onions.
In proof thereof,a Portsmouth hoise
h mentioned which had a severe at
tack ot the disease and his owner
placed a hall doien onions in tin
trough with his regular food. ’I In
horse tackled three of the onions iu
iiitd.ately, and by tbe time tie bad
swallowed them began to cough, smeez
and prance about, appearing quite itn
diguaut and refusing to t uch tbe re
maining onions, l'or lull five minute
ibis continued, and there was a cured
horse. He has not had a cough, sneeze
or any symptom of the epizootic, but he
did have tbe courage to eat the onions
reman mg in the trough the next day
after tile cure.

In the seventh volume of the memoirs
of John Quincy Adams there is a cu
rious account of what came near being
a physical battle between President
Monroe and Crawford, his Secretary of
the Treasury. Mr. Adams heard of
this and asked Mr. Southard if he anew
anything about it.
“He said yes; that one day last win
ter on coming here he found Mr. Mon
roe walking to and fro across ilia room
in great agitation; that he told him
Crawford had left him; he came to him
concerning the nomination of certain
officers of the customs of the Northern
ports; that Crawford recommended the
nomination of several persons against
whom Mr. Monroe expressed seven]
objections; that Mr Crawford at last
arose in irritation, gathered the papers
together, and said petulantly. “Well it
you will not appoint persons well quali
fied for the places, tell rile whom you
will appoint that I may get rid of their
importunities.” Mr. Monroe replied
with great warmth, saying he consider
ed Mr. Crawford’s language as extrem--
ly improper and unsuitable to the rela
tions between them, when Crawford,
turning to hrei. raised his stick in an
attitude, to strike and said, “you
infernal old scoundrel!” Mr. Monroe
seized the tongs at the fireplace lor self
defense; applied a retaliatory epithet to
Crawford, and told him lie would im
mediately ring f>r servants himself am’
turn hire out of the house; upon which
Crawford, beginning to recover himself,
said “he did not intend and had not in
tended to insult him” and left the
house. '1 hey never met afterwards."
