Mr. Varner was a former citizen of this county, end in.v r e I the daiighl. r of our esteemed fellow citizen. S. D. Durham. Tin: DIM D JUKI. While we cannot fully in ioise the Fre ■entments of the Grand Jury, it affords us unqualified pleasure to say, that they have discharged their duties more fearlessly than any like body since the war. Very grave questions were presented for their consid eration; they have met them like men, and no matter how the people may receive their Recommendations, their motives cannot be ympugticd. While admitting the necessity for retrenchment i,n our county expenses, tve are .disposed to think that this Grand Body, ill their zeal in a good cause, have committed some errors on this point. In due time we shall express ourselves more explicitly upon the subject. We were especially gratified a! the man ner in which the Jury handled the subject orvagranev. For some years our county, and Grecnesboro’ especially, has been cursed with a number of worthless chnrac lers who Wave been “instant in season and out of season in their efforts to solve the problem of living without work. The Grand Jury addressed themselves special ly to this class, and as an evidence o. the animus of that body, wo are pleased to say that Thirty two true bills were found against the trifling vagabonds denominated vagrants. Wo commend them most highly for their course on this subject, and feel as sured lli.af their lahors will rasult in a great benefit to the county by ridding it of a larg" c i ilss 0 f consumers who never earn an honest .penny and .struggle about <lay and night, a disgrace to t,unm uity an l a curse to >he country. The presentments of this honorable body are published in an other column. J"s* , Joh work dono b*r*. A AE(l).
