ception in Atlanta. Hayes has acted
go kindly toward us Southern people
that wc have almost forgotten the fact
that he is a fraud. 'We are glad to say
that that fellow Key kept rather in tin
background while in our State. You
8-e, Key is from the South, and they
nssigned him the duty of talking soft
to the Northern people, while Hayes
and the other boys Gxcd it up with the
fellows down in Dixie. Ah ! he’s a
elv old fraud, is Hayes, hut it is well
to feed liini high so long as he keeps
up his present policy.

through the Russian ranks, and wc arc

Atlanta. Wednesday, Sept. -26
The Presidential enthusiasm h:
scarcely subsided sufficiently lor me to
write a ealui letter and if the present
effusion is remarkable ouly f-r its gush
1 beg you to rcm.-mber that the writer
has for ti e fust time beheld (lie glory
of Executive Supremacy and if I am
.dazzled I console myself with the nu
merous company in which I stand.
We were afraid the President would
not visit us. He had mapped out his
route and had left us to the South while
lie went circling up into tho trnely loyal
regions of Tennessee, wheic during the
war there were so many traitors and
where since there has been so much
political boot licking. But we sent a
committee of influential cit zer.s to
•meet the Presidential party at Chat
tanooga and insist on their coining to
■ our city. After considerable peisuasion
the President arid his friends consented
to cmne to see us. On the very nigiii
that his intentions were telegraphed to
the city, there came another telegram
which was toceived with much more
general and sinctrejoy. Wade Hiunp*
don had lelt the Presidential party at
Chattanooga and was coming qpietly
on down to slip through Atlanta and
get home without any further demon
stration. Such a proceeding however
could not he allowed and by the time
the train ‘.•cached Atlanta a big crowd
had collected, Govcrpor Colquitt and
others boarded (lie train and brought
(he Governor out to the crowd that
yelled themselves hoarse for him. He
appeared and was compelled to Remain
iover. He responded to the serenade in
a few manly remarks which were not
at. all fluently spoken, for the Governor
iis by no means an orator.
•lie wan i Atlanta the nest day and
on Friday night, there was given in his
hoDnr a magnificent ovati jn at which
-three thousand people were present and
the enthusiasm bubbled ova-. Seuator
.Gordon introduced the lion and he made
anothei plain practical speech which
was applauded for its noble sentiments.
./Senator Hill was literally pushed for
.ward by the enthused crowd and made
-one of those brief and b. illiant speeches
with which lie can so suddenly carry
away almost any audience.
Hampton left that night apd nest
.Jay the town was excited over the ar
rival of the President.
He came down with the attendant
grandeur of a special train adorned
with flags ths,t flapped patriotically in
tthe •Southern breeze. The city was
Jacked extensively in stars and stripes
aed I have not seen it appear so patri-
otic since thp memorable secession
illuminating* of 180 L
The president and party were driv
en aroqnd the city iu magnificent
equipages and as the crowd was await
ing his exit from the hotel to enter the
carriage I elbowed my way through a
lc)y thousand crowded citizens of both
colors to get close enough to see him.
AH of a sudden there was a big yell and
looking forward I siiw a large man of
apparently fifty good years, with sandy
hair and beard and a keen brown eye,
rising in the carriage and bowing to
the crowd which continued to yell I
recognized our de facto presided at
once. He looks the image if his cam
paign pictures apd even (lie cartoons
that the Democratic press (ling at him,
give a fine likeness of his open, frank
face.
In the carriage behind the Presi
dent and Governor Colquitt sat three
loading citizens in company with a
face with a curious look of wisdom
coming out of the sunken bl ight eyes
and tlie fine aquline nose coming down
with peculiar affection to meet the
chin that protruded with evident iode
dendt-nee. 1 thought of Alex Stephens
at once, hut another glance showed
that the keen, Yankee .eoynjeoanee
was that of Win. Evarty, perhaps the
foremost of all A lawyers, the
hero of the Beecher trial and the rul
ing genius of the Electoral Commission.
Such a wonderful intellectuality tyas
stamped on the withered features that
I caught myself following the carriage
to get a closer look at the mug. Key
sat in the procession the picture of
lazy good humor.
Alter the grand rounds there way a
big speaking in which Hayes advised
the negroes to be contented and to
(rust white men of the South :t£ tbeir
best friends. Everts flung out a few
of his six fool tangled sentences which
escaped the comprehension of most of
Ihe crowd. Key spoke., but received
tittle applause, which was more than
he deserved for his disgusting flunkey
ing a few weeks ago iu New England.
The Presyjey.t yvas cheered fur his man
ly sentiments ,\vbco his wife, with
her fine face and pleased. was

talk of the lot, except Rvarts. 'i’he
cx-Guvcraor made a very open state
ment about our affairs, and spoke iu a
most straightforward manner, apologi
zing for no-tiling, aud giving the Presi

cause he had done his duty. The I’re
•sident held a reception at the Executive
Mansion at night, and a thousand la
dies and gentlemen were presented to
him and his accomplished lady, lie
and his party left that night, and were
cheered as 'the train rolled out. We
were ail pleased with Hayes, for he
secuis an houest man, anxious to do his
whole duty. He expressed himself do

As soon as they have formed
their first flowers in the open
ground, pinch off the end of the
first shoot, and as soon as the rose
is fully opened, pick it off. No
rose should he left to fade upon
the bush, as when so left it exhausts
the plant in the formation of seed.
As the plants grow, pinch back the
ends of the shoots when they have
grown six inches, and rub out all
i puny shoots, thus keeping the
I plants in a rounded open hush
form. If strong shoots alone are
left to grow, they will soon control
the strength of the plaiff, and the
flowers will be few arid often of im
perfect form. Should the season
be liot and dry, a mulch of fine,
fresh grass or sawdust, or moss from
the woods, should be placed all
over the soil three inches deep, and
at night watered thoroughly, pot
sprinkle 1, but wet like a day’s rain.
The Hybrid Perpetuals or Noisettes
require this pruning or pinching
back, moro promptly than the Teas,
Bengals or Bourbons.—E. It. El
