FRIDAY, FEDKUARY 13, 1884.
THU MAV ( AFITOi:
Mr. Post, the New York archi
tect, who was employed by cha Cap
itol Commission to examine tho
plans for the new Capitol building,
completed bis labors last week,and
submitted his report. He recom
mended, and tho Commission bo
capted, the design of Messrs Ed
brooke it Burnham, of Chicago.
The excellaut Atlanta corre
pondent of the Telegraph dfc Me*
teuger has this to sy, of the sue
cessful architect, nnd the plan ac
cepted for the Capitol :
•*Afr. Edbrooke is about forty
years old, a native of Chicago, and
has been enjigeil in his pi ofeisi >ti
al work in that city about twenty
years, during which time he has
been very successful, ami engaged
in the construction of many public
works.
He gave me a general dscrtp*
tion of his design, which will be of
interest to your readers
The style adopted for the build
ing is Corinthian, and combines
beauty, strength and harmony.—
The historic adornments are rep
resented by figures of Justice,
Peace, Science, Law anil Liberty,
together with the coat of arms of
the State.
The outer walls of the building
•will be faced with Georgia granite
and maible, and backed up with
brick work. The cornices, parapet
walls, base and superstruction of
•dome will als# be of marble There
are four eutrauces with broad gran
ite steps, leading to the grand cor
ridors of the main floor. The prin
cipal entrance is from Washington
•street, the steps being fifty-five feet
an width leading to the grand por
tico. The pedment of this portice
as supported by six polished mar
‘ble coluinnß with carved capitals,
the tympanum richly ornamented
•with the State coat of-arms.
The dome is a distinguished fea
ture, ami will be constructed with
the best examples of architecture,
and entirely detached from all oth
er walls of the building. Access
to the gallery of the dome and lan
tern is by easy stairways.
The < xterior of the building in
dicates the locality of the varicue
departments, such as lull of Rep
resentatives, Senate chamber,State
library, Supreme Court, etc.
The legislative halls nd all
rooms are lighted directly from the
outside.
Tin architects have carefull y tn
traduced into th interior arrange'
merits all the modern impede*
merits in heating and ventilation,
plumbing, elevators for passengers
and freight, grates in every room
and department, and every other
knotvn convenience.
The building will be fire proof
throughout, all floors, ceiling and
soofs being constructed with- iron
beams and girders, and fireproof; j
no wood being used except lor ,
doors, frames, sash, blinds, floors
of offices, seating of lulls and gal
leries and shelving of library.
The entire building, in addition
ho the grates will be warmed by ra
diation, and the system of ventila
tion perfect.
Ln the basement ni l be the
steam boilers, pumps, fans and en
gines; fuel and storage rooms all
entirely above ground.
On the first 11‘tor will be located
the executive offices anil other
State departments. *
On the second floor the legist*
tive balls, library, Supreme Court
abd the various rooms required in
connection with the Baa>
On the third floor the committee
rooms, galleries and janitor room*.
The following are the dimensions
—East and west Fftsads, 33<l feet;
north and sooth, 160 feet; height

sion to discuss and arrange all the
details. lie will then mike a
careful examination of the ground
selected, make a test by digging
into it, and will then leave for Chi
cago and put a skillful force at
work on a careful and thorough j
draught of the design, to the most
minuto detail. He is of opinion
thst he wii! require sixty d-ys for
this work
It is likely that his services will
be largely engaged by the commie
mission in the construction of the
new capitol. This, I believe, is
customary and would seem essen
tia! in justice to the designs and to
tho architect.
