—There is but little cotton left in
the county. Here and there, a farmer
may have a few bales; but, the crop
has been marketed.
Money seems to be tighter here
than for several yew* The cotton crop
last year was short, and after paying
their debts the people have but little
rnoqey left.
—Thus far, the demand for West
ern corn aud Buoon has been unusually
light. Farmers either have made
more breadstuff and bacon at home, or
else have learned the important lesson
of economy. In either event, it is a
good indication,
—The water courses have been
much swollen by recent heavy rains,
ar.d some damage has resulted to fenc
ing in portions of the c uoty.

•We learn that Dr. l’hos. P. Janes
of this county, formerly State Commis
sioner of Agriculture, has been tender
ed the Presidency of a large company
organized lor the manufacture of im
proved agricultural implements.
Greenesboro’ needs water works,
aud the streets should be lighted by
gas; however, she can make out with
out either the water or the gas, but,
how she is to get on much longer
without a first class school house aod a
good commodious Hotel building are
serious questions.

grass hay is beginning to be understood,
as is evidenced by the fact, that re
cently *a numb-r of otders'have been
received from a distauee for it. II
parties who save it, would bale and
store it in town, cr ship it to the ci
ties, they would realize handsomely.
An interesting entertainment will
be given this evening at the Seminary
Admission 10 cts. The proceeds will
be invested ia curtains and other ar
ticles necessary to the comfort of the
scholars. Every one who can should
attend,
—A severe hail storm, attended
with much thunder, lightning and
wind occurred on Tuesday evening
about four o’clock Several persons
report the hail stones, iu different lo
calities, as large as guinea eggs.
—White Plains wants rail-road com
munication with tbe balance of the
world, and she ought to have it. There
is not a more enterprising or thrifty
village in the State Although twelve
miles from the nearest railroad depot,
not less than three thousand bales of
cotton are purchased each season by
her merchants, and her trade annually
aggregates several baud rad thousand
dolfars. She ought to have railroad
facilities, and if her plucky citizens
will take ho'd of the matter in earnest,
it won’t he long before the whistle of
the foeomoiive will rcsouud through
the “gray lands’' and bring her in
creased prosperity and wealth. If the
Union Point, White Plains & Tcnnille
road can’t be built, a narrow guage to
the Georgia R. R. ean be.
The storm on Tuesday, did
considerable damage in the neigh
borhood of Garner's old ferry, on
the Oconee. All the timber, a
great deal of fencing, the stables
and barn dnd Come out houses on
Mr Isaac R Hall’ place, were
blown down, Mr. Hall, who saw
the cloud, says it appeared to be
rtlling along at a furious rate on
the ground, and that after destroy,
tng his barn, it rose above the
earth and 1 passedover his dwelling.
At Mr. Who. Armor’s some
damage was done to out houses and
fencing, and the chimneys to his
dwelling wepe blown down. No
othe-r damage is reported.
A negro chi Id, ten or twelve
years of age, son of Jasper Pearce,
near White Plains, died of hydro
phobia on Tuesday. Ho Was bit
ten about six weeks ago. but the
disease did not develop until a few
days before bis death.

—lt seems, that for soooe time
past, the freight cars en the
Georgia Railroad have been repea
tedly robbed between Oconee and
Union Point. The thieves, it is
supposed, would force an entrance
to a car at euc or the other of the
points named, and, while the train
was in motion, throw goods out te
be hauled off by confederates who
were in waiting on tbs roadway.—
About two weeks ago, Mr. Stone,
a detective in the employ of the
Railroad, made his appearance
here *8 a tramp, and i-e hit aftrewd
way, worked up the *ass.
On Monday evening he swore
a warrant, before Esquire Bick
ers, for the arrest of J C Fisher,
Columbus Fisher, Lewis Fisher
and John Nelan, charging them
with the effence; and, also procurr
ed warrants to search their houses
Monday night, Mr J II English,
Bailiff ef the County Court, and J
S Hall; Deputy Sheriff, accompa
nied by a posse, went out to arrest
the parties and execute the search
warrants. They found a large
quantity of goods, principally Do
mestics. Tobacco, Coffee and Whis
ky, which were seized and breught
to town. Lewis Fisher Jwas ab
sent, and Columbus Fisher effect
ed bis escape; but. J C Fisher and
John Nelan were brought in and
committed to Jail. An investiga
tion was had on Wednesday after
nosn, before the esmmitting mag.

Nelan were held to await the action
of the Grand Jury at the March
Term of the Superior QourP
