It appears that a negro man and
his wife, while working in a til l I
near their home yesterday, sent a
boy, whether theirown son nr a hired
l>oy is not fully known, Back to the
house for some nails. Returning to
the field he horrified the parents
with news of the tragedy. Rushing
to the house the parents found five
of their little children dead and dy
ing, the warm blood still oozing from
gashes in their heads and faces. The
heads of two of the children were
split open with an axe, which was
found by them lying near at hand
and covered with blood, three were
dead, and two others in the agony of
expiring life. The eldest of those
two, a was unconscious at last
accounts and at the point of death.

house is completed each day, and still

tend with cyclones, pneumonia, cold
and slush, we breathe the balmy,
spring-like atmosphere of a tropical
climate.
Our natives live on fish and go
phers in the summer—oranges and
sick Yankees in the winter. 'Tradi
tion has it, that gophers were once
the currency here. For instance, if
a man liought a 20 cents plug of to
bacco, he received in exchange for
bis two bits, a live cent gopher.
We were out foraging last Sunday,

75 cent ctju*. and felt highly rr-ward
ed for the three miles ramble through
saw grass and scrub Palmettos.
Tropical fruits me plentiful, such
as oriuges, lemons, pine apples

ring the holidays, did great damage
to the Pine Apples and 1 Saimaa or
chards; it also killed a liumlter of
young orange trees.
The orange crop will soon be dis
posed of. However, the trees are in
blvaum, and the outlook is. that we
will have another bountiful crop of
the golden fruit in due course of time.
We get the Herald every week,
and as many times greet it with a

Central Mississippi was struck by a
terrible cyclone on March 11th. —
Near Columbus and Starkville the
destruction was very great, both to
life and property.
Donn Piatt says the Democratic
party is the “organized ignorance of
the land,” and the Republican party
“the organized dishonesty.” Dunn
is pretty near right.
A Salt Lake City special gives an
account of a snow slide at Alta, on the
7th, which swept away the works of
the new Emma mine. It killed elev
en persons. The slide was half a
mile wide, and the snow was piled 40
feet high.
Washington, March 11. —In the
House to-day, under a call of com
mit tee for reports, Mr. Hammond, of
Oeorgia, from a Committee on the
Judiciary, reported favorable the hi Of

('. Hawkins at Lancaster, Mass., says
the Boston ('’lth'utor. lEr calculates
to have about 8,000 fowls every fall,
and carries over about 2,500 laying
hens through winter. His farm con
tains twenty-five acres,, and' his poul
try buildings occupy an acre and a
half. They are situated oil the slope
of a hill and eo-mprise six or seven
sheds 200 feet in length.. Each shed
is divided into apartments of 12x20
feet, and about twentydive hens arc
kept in each, division. A yard is
matte ni front of each apartment, so
that the members of each are by them
selves.

county was recently poisoned with
some foul beef, which lie bought from
some negroes. The cow was killed
accidentally, and when the negroes
skinned her Cher concluded to sell:
some of the beef. The negroes were
prosecuted and convicted in the Couu
tv Court.
The narrmv-guage railroad from
Social Circle to Gainesville, has been
finished and ears are now running.
Gen. John I>. Gordon;, of Georgia,
lias invited - the ext'onfederate- std
diers, now in Xcw \ ork, to meet him
at the St. Jam's Hotel, to-morrow
night, for conference with deputa
tions from the Grand Annv of the
Republic in the interest of a home for
disabled Confederate soldiers.

Mrs John lk Smith, of Jackson
countv, committed suicide, yesterday,
in a most horrible manner. She tid
ed a pot with water, put it on the fire
and when it began to boil plunged her
head into it, and was soon after dis
covered in that situation. —Chronicle

Solid South: Mr. John Branan,
the well known conductor, is serious
ly ill at his home in Rutledge with
typhoid pneumonia.
In the ease- of Alt I loyal for the
killing of a policeman named Han
cock, in Griffin, the supreme court
has decided that Duval is entitled to
anew trial. The new trial is granted
principally on the ground that one of
the jury, C. 11. Wiggers, said before
the trial that if he could get on. tlu
jury he would hang I loyal.

Ludwiek Miller, a Swede, was ac
cidentally beheaded by a switch en
gine in Atlanta on Tuesday, last

Gov. McDaniel’s first clemency was
exercised on the 14th inst, in commu
ting the death sentence of Enoch
Freeman, a colored murderer of Floyd
county, to imprisonment for life. The
exercise of clemency was petitioned
by numerous citizens and recommend
ed by the Attorney General.
Near Pocahontas, in Tazewell coun
ty, Ya., on Wednesday night last
a terrible explosion occurred in the
Flat Top coal mine, by which one.
hundred and fifty-five lives were
lost.
The Methodists of Augusta have
decided to build a centenary church
in the upper part of the city.
There are over two hundred indict
ments for murder, or attempts to
murder, now pending in the courts of
Cincinnati; and yet ('ineinnati is in
the State which is partially represen
ted in the United States Senate by
the bloody-shirt shrieker, John Sher
man.
A singular accident happened late
ly at a mill in Nashville,, Tenn. A
workman was thrown toward a circu
lar sew, and, thinking lie would strike
it, died fr mi fright. When picked
lip he was dead, but there was no sign
of a bruise on his body. —K \
The State of New York, with three,
times the population of Georgia, ten
times as many convicts. New York
has 1d,691), and. Georgia less than
1,000. Yet complaint is made at the
North that Georgia sends too many
negroes to thcpuuitentiary.

Brcckinridi'c was a remarkable man,

undertook to portray the Kentucky
horse-raiders. Brockiuri lgo stood it

turning to the blue grass region for a
location of his stories,, and finally
Breckinridge retorted. He described
a recent visit to South Carolina, and
Ills meeting there with several of the
original secessionists. One of them,
who was a milit in officer in Keith’s owu
district, had just returned from a mus
ter arrayed in faded regimentals of blue
jicaam, witli a dragoon’s sword trailing
at his side and a huge fore an 1 aft
chapeau, surmounted with a long feath
er. lie was fuii of enthusiatn for the
cause, a lid descanted with particular el
oquence u|>oi> ’.vbat he called, the wrongs
of the South. ‘ I tell you, sah,’ said
he, addressing mo (Breckinridge), ‘we
cannot eland il any lougor : we intend

it is impossible, sail, that we should

I asked bits*, said Breckinridge ; ‘Wbat
are you suffering from !’ and he re
plied, ‘Why, sah, we are suffering un
der the oppression of the federal Gov
ernment. We have been suffering un
der it for twenty-five years or more,
aud we will stand it no longer.
Breckinridge then turned to Keith
and coutinued .’ ‘ I advise uij young
friend here from South Carolina to visit
some cf his constituents before under
taking to go to war with the North and
to advise them to go through the
North era States, to te;u h them what

to whip before they get through.”
Breckinridge was sincere in his remark,
yet not many months had elapsed be
fore ho was forsed into the recessiou
by Keith, l’ryor, Ruffin and the other
agitators, lie did not, however, show
much z'al iu fighting, and it is related
ol him that after peace had been re
st red he found huuselt at a railroad
station at St. Paul with the veterans
of the First Minnesota, who were cele
brating their anniversary They le.ul

Breckinridge, who sat in a corner with
ex-Gov. B riali Magoffin and two or

correctly and neatly kept, reflecting
much credit upon these officers; anil
in the name and behalf of the citizens
of our county, we return sincere
thanks to them for the efficient man
ner in which they have discharged

Commissioners have the Jail put in
perfect repair: and further that the
commutation for rationing all priso

tain a free ferry on Oconee River, at
the place now known as Park’s Ferry.
We recommend that the petition of
certain citizens in relation to the
opening of Daniel’s Ferry, as a free
Ferry, be turned over to the County
< 'ommissioners for such action as they
may see til to take.
We commend to the County Com
missioners Miss Mcßride, Mrs! Will
jams ami Mrs. Barnett as worthy ob
jects of charity.
We recommend that the Cixuiity
(.‘ommissioners pursue the same plan
in providing for the county poor, as
is now in operation..
We recommend that the County
Commissioners, at as early a day as
possible, cite before them one or more
of the Road Commissioners from each
Militia District, and have them put!
the public roads, in (heir several dis
tricts, in good order.
We find the dockets of the Noti -
fies Public and Justices of the Peace,
which have been submitted to us,
to be correct, except that of W. G.
Johnson of the 143 District. No dock
ets were submitted to us from Dis
tricts, Nos., 147, 146 and 161.
We recommend for the office of
Notary Public the following gentle
