The State Democratic Executive Committee
Met in Atlanta last Saturday.
The Committee called two conven
tions, to meet in Atlanta; the one on
the l*tli of-June to appoint delegates
to the National Convention which
meets in Chicago to nominate a can
didate for the Presidency; the other
on the 13th of August to nominate a
candidate for Gnverner, State House
officers and Presidential electors.
The committee suggested that the
County Conventions to appoint dele
gates to said convention Ire held, re
spectively, on the first Tuesdays in
June and August.
STEPHENS’ MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION.
Soon after the death of Cor. Ste
phens, a number of his friends and
admirers, desirous of giving expres
sion to their appreciation of his ex
alted character and distinguished
services, organized an Association for
the purpose of buying ‘'Liberty
Hall,” and erecting at that place, a
suitable memorial to the great Geor
gian. In furtherance of the plan.
Miss Gay, an estimable lady well
qualified for the duty, was requested
to act as agent for the Association.—
She consented, and entered at once,
heartly, upon the work. Strange to
*iV, her appeals have fallen upon
deaf ears. Although she has can
vassed actively for some months, she
has only been able to collect the pal
try sum of Of course, this
was disheartening, and, as a result,
l ust week she signified her intention
of abandoning the field. The man
agers of the Association, resident at
<'rawfordville, have urged Miss Gay
to resume the work, and it is to he
hoped that she may he induced to
r..'consider her resignation of the
trust. It is not so much the states
man whom the Association seeks thus
to honor, as it is the philanthropist —
the great-souleil- man who devoted
his life to the service" of his fellow
men. Surely the people of Georgia
will contribute the few thousand dol
lars necessary to purchase “Liberty
Hall" as n last resting p’ace for the
“Great Commoner,” and to enable
the Association to accomplish its lau
dable purposes.
