the hi 0 h -t type of the old Southern
gentleman. Reared in the school of
honor, his lofty soul was the very j

better feelings which elevate and en

toned and courteous, he attracted the
admiration and engaged the affec

contact. The clement? of true man-

the teachings and principles of a no

—The exhibition given by Mis?
Lula Hurst here on Friday night
last, of which we give elsewhere, a
brief necoiuii, bus given rise to much
discussion among those who saw her
on the stage. Wo do not feel called
upon to give our individual opinion
in this particular case ; but, it has
given rise to some reflections which
may not prove uninteresting to our
.reader?.
Tlio over crodulou.; are too apt to
regard any wonderful or extraordina
ry manifestation of mentrd or physi
cal power in man, which they can
not understand, a.s the result of some
supernatural or miraculous agency.
\\ idle on the other hand the ex
tremely skeptical, being loth to be
lieve that anything miraculous ever
happens, generally regard such things
ns the manipulations of a trickster
ami a “humbug.”
Conceding that Miss Hurst is pos
sessed of all the extraordinary pow
er over persons and inanimate ob
jects that is claimed for her, we see
nothing that would authorize the
conclusion that such powers are the
result of any supernatural agency. —
Animal-magnetism and animal-elec
tricity have long been recognized in
the world of science. I'hey may now
be regarded as two distinct branches
of science. The former was brought
into notice bv Mesmcr, a German
scientist, about a century since. The
latter is equally as ancient in point
of birth. For the past century dis
coveries have been made, from time to
time, in reference to the existence of
these elements of nature in the ani
mal kingdom. It is now considered
by scientists as clearly established,
that there is a constant production of
electricity in the tissues and muscles
of the human hotly : and this element
in some systems is developed to a
nmeli greater extent than in others.
.For instance, it 1 well authenticated,
that persons have been so charged
with the electrical element as to be
tible to light the gas from a burner,
by . imply bringing near it t. c tips of
ilieir lingers; furniture lots been
made to crack and to move under luc
influence of a strong electrical cur
rent from the human bodv.
It is also well established, that the
magnetic force in nature, is develop
ed to an extraordinary extent in tjm
bodies of some persons ; and they
have the power to impart its influ
ence and efleets to others with whom
they come in contact. Mesmerism
is regarded now simply as a manifes
tation of this force. The word, as
xv ill he readily seen, is derived from
the name of the scientist above men
tioned. It has often been demon
strated, that a person under the influ
ence of the manipulation • of 1 5 1 •
magnetizer becomes possessed of ex
traordinary powers of sense and per
ception.
' Now, these two elements might be
combined to an extraordinary degree
in one person ; and if so, why should
they not produce even greater won
ders than have ever been claimed for
J Ii - llurst ?

ol scieu; e arc, tioabiie-., still at a loss
an ' ii the dark to a great extent on
the subjects above anc.itioned. It is
not unreasonable to conclude, that
there is many a power in nature of
which man has yet learned compara
tively nothing.
But simply because we do not un
lerstand many things we witness;
simply because they arc not the con
sfiqueuceof ay li., ofn.Our.ol'whi li
we are cognizant, is no reason for
inferring they are supernatural ; that
is, induced by some agency above the
laws of nature. Such rash conclu
sions doubtless led to the execution
of many a “witch” in the past, and
have given rise to many a believer in
spiritualism of the present age.
