Tii? Athens Banner-Watchman of
the 13th hrvh, “An agent of the Rich
mond & Danville Syndicate is daily
expected in Athens, whose mission
•will be to look into an extention from
this city to some point on the Macon

If that S\ ndicate and the people of

Greene, Hancock and Washington,
and the excellent timber and farm
hinds of Johnson, Laurens & Mont
gomery, they would not rest until
they had a road constructed through
those counties to or towards Eastman,
or some other point on the Macon &
Brunswick 11. B.
The above is taken from the San
dersville Mercury. The road could
be built, and doubtless would be, if
the people directly interested would
take hold of the matter with deter
mination. The topography of the
country through which the road, as
indicated, would pass, is such that
there would be but little heavy gra
ding ; hence, the expense, outside of
ironing and equipping such a road,
•would be comparatively light. The
advantages of such a road, to the sec
tion through which it would pass,
would l*e incalculable. But, it will
hardly be built, if the people sit w ith
their hands in their pockets and wait
for the Richmond A Danville syndi
cate, or any other syndicate to build
it. The initiative must he taken by
the people of the several counties
along the projosed route. If those
who would lie benefitted by such a
railway, would offer sufficient induce
ments to sokm* powerful corporation,
like the Richmond A Danville,
which was hooking for an ex tension
of its lines, the road might be built.
flomc portions of this county arc
much interest' din procuring rail
road facilities, and, if die Richmond
A Danville syndicate really intends to
extend its line from Athens through
YMdJ? Georgia to the =er.hi\nrd. it
would be well that some organized
elTort should be made to have it pass
through our county.

Convicts and Free Labor
Atlanta Constitution: Reports
reached the city yesterday from Ris
ing Fawn furuace, the property large
ly of Senator Brown, that trouble
was brewing among the laborers who
had heretofore been employed to op
erate those works. When Capt. W.
D. Grant recently sold out his lease
of a portion of the convicts, Senator
Brown was one of the purchasers and
received about seventy-five of the
convicts. Having already, under
his former lease, a sufficient force of
convicts nt the I)adc coal mines, he
proposed to employ his new gang of
convicts at the Rising Fawn furnace,
in lieu of the free labor upon which
he had heretofore depended. A day
or two ago, notices wore posted at the
iron works to the effect that in a few
days the free laborers would he re
lieved from employment and their
places supplied by the convicts. To
this brief nnd peremptory notification
the free laborers have taken hitter
exceptions, and are in a state of excit
ed discontent. Some of them are
much enraged, and are said to he
counselling resistance by force to the
work of supplanting them with fel
ons. Thay affirm that the discharge
comes upon them unprepared, and
subjects themselves aud their families
to enforced idleness and hardships at
a very critical season of the year.
They arc reported to havs sent a pro
test to Senator Brown, detailing their
grievance, and are waiting his reply.
The majority of the men, while in ill
humor over the state of affairs, arc
not disposed to violent demonstra
tions, since they have been assured
that any turbulence or interference
with the safety and proper custody of
the convicts would involve them in a
serious conflict with the State author
ities. Every precaution will te tak
en to guard the convicts, either from
personal harm or from liberation at
the hands of the free laborers.
Chattanooga, May 17. —Last Sat
urday W. H. Moore, Jr., connected
with the Georgia Central Railroad,
came to this city aud registered at
the Hamilton House. He had con
siderable baggage. He expressed a
desire to go in the cave under Look
out mountain. His friends tried to
dissuade him, but to uo effect. He
made preparations and started.—
Since that time, nothing has been
heard of him, and it is supposed he
has lost his way in the cave, and this
belief is strengthened by the fact that
his baggage is still at the Hamilton
House. This evening a party was
made up to go through the cave to
search for him.
Athens Banner-Watchman : Con
versation with the members of the
executive committee,yesterday, show
ed that our Congressmen will have
no opposition for reelection. Mr.
Reese has a firm hold upon the peo
ple of his district. His record the
present term lias made him many
friends, and wc hear nothing but
words of commendation on all sides
of his niauly career.
Atiikns, Ga., May 20. —Up the
North-eastern near Tallulah Falls,
the heaviest hail storm ever known
in that scctibu fell yesterday evening.
It was about three miles in width 1
and laid everything bare in its track.
The hail stones were the size of eggs
and drifted four feet deep on the
sides of the mountains. Limbs and
leaves were torn from the trees, and
not a stalk of w heht was loft stand
ing.—Chronicle it CoiwtUutmtafist.
Tlie ktemaiiuation to make the li
quor question a test in the election of
county officers and the members of
the Legislature is apparent, in a
number of counties. The policy is
bail. Where local questions can be
settled at home, they should not be
transferred to other arenas, or settled
in any other way except upon their
own merits. Telegraph & Messenger.
