A* chairman of the Democratic
Executive Committee of Greene
CVMjntv. I here hr call a convention
of the Democratic Party of this coun
ty, to meet on the first Tuesday in
June, at the Court House, at 11
o’clock a. m., then and there to se
lect delegate- to the State Conven
tion for the {i mpose of nominating
State Officers; also to select dele
gates to attend the convention which
meets in Atlanta to nominate delegates
to the Presidential Convention, which
meets in Chicago; and, also to se
lect delegates to attend toe Senatori
al Convention, composed of the
counties of Greene, Warren an l Tal
iaferro. The Democratic Executive
Committee of the county will please
meet at 9 o’clock a. in., on the same
day.
The importance of this convention
requires a full meeting, and all Dem
ocrats, r-'g ardless of past differences,
are cordially invited to be present.
•JOHN C. HART, Chairman.
May L’lst., 1884.
—The National Republican Con
vention will meet at Chicago, next
Tuesday. Blaine and Arthur each
have a large following; hut, it is
doubtful if either cun secure the
nomination. The impression seems
to he gaining ground that either
Post Master Gen. Gresham, or Robt.
Lincoln will he the nominee.
Gresham is a man of some ability ;
but, Lincoln has nothing to com
mend him, aside from the fact that
lit- is the son of bis pa.
—Under the rotation system, in
vogue in this Senatorial District,
Taliaferro county is entitled to the
Henator thi* time. At the conven
tion of the Democracy of Taliaferro,
held last Saturday, Johu W. Ilixon,
Esq., of Crawford villi*, was indorsed
for this important position ; and, his
name will lie presented to the Sena
torial convention as the choice of
that county.
—We again call attention of all
democrats in the county to a meet
ing of their ’party here on next Tues
day. Tie- importance of this mass
meeling of the party can not well be
esagyeiv.ted ; aadevery one who feels
an iut' rest ta the selection of good
men to rejoi .-ei’.t the Democracy of
< ireene in tie- several conventions —
State, Senatorial and Congressional —
i*ooii to assemble, should be on hand.
This is the year for the election of
the most important officers in the
nominate candidates for the different
State office 3 ; also, to the Coagres
-sional e■*:iv ”.ition to nominate a can
didate for Congress from this Dis
trict ; ami, to the Senatorial conven
tion to nominate a candidate for the
State Senate. Of course it will de
pend upon the decision of the party
in convention next Tuesday, as to
whether it will fill all these positions
ut its meeting then ; or adjourn over
t some other day to complete its
work. Thi itsi-lf is an important
governments, State and Federal.
AVe should haw worthy and efficient
representatives in the State conven
tion, soon to assemble in Atlanta to
nominate delegates to the conven
tion at Chicago, which will meet to
nominate a candidate for President;
also, to the State convention which
will meet in Atlanta next July to
question to he decided, and every
Democrat who has a particle of pub
lic spirit should be present and help
to decide wisely, this as well as many
other important questions, that may
arise.
school Or Technology,
The Atlanta Journal says, “Techni
cal Education is a subject emphati
cally worthy of the earnest attention
of our State Legislature. It be
hooves every member to look into the
matter and inform himself as to the
best means within reach for the ac
complishment of the object. The
question has already been considered
in that body. Let it now pass from
consideration to consummation. T.ie
welfare of the State, and the good
name of it a* tli- leading emnntou
•■.call!: -f this great political division
. die Union demand action.”
The Journal is right.
Ton much stress can not he laid on
this subject. A school of technology
is an absolute necessity. The youths
of the State should he educated prac
tically. The literary Institutions of
the tatc are doing a grand work, in
their wav ; hut. it will hardly be de
nied, that after all, they only fit a
young man partially for the practical
duties of life. The establishment of
a school of art? is a “consummation
devoutly to be wished-”
Mr. Harris of Bibb, deserves well
of his immediate constituency, and
of the State at large, for his able ad
vocacy of this matter beforo the last
Legislature. It is te be hoped that
the next Legislature will he compos
e! largely of men like Mr. Harris,
who understand and appreciate the
demands of the Stale and the times,
and are willing to meet such demands
by liberal appropriations.

AVe have received the following
from a reader of the Telegraph c'r
JEeesen jer:
“Macon, Ga., May 25th, 1884. —
Dear Sir: Your article copied in
Telegraph A Messenger, that as
much as 14,000 pounds of Bermuda
Grass llay had been taken from one
acre of River bottom land, at one
cutting, I am inclined to think is ex
aggerated. A\ c have, in the Ocmul
gee swam) . near the city, some of
the fine i..i m m -tdows 1 ever
saw, ar c land is a; rich as any of
the boasted Mi-d.-vippi River bot
toms. One ru< low, in particular,
in a horse shoe of the river, of 40
acres, i the fin*‘.4 1 oversaw; it lias
been in bernuiJa gra.-s for 8 years
and well eared for, by a farmer that
raises only hay and nothing else for
market, and i-mailing money. He cut,
8 tons at one cutting from a measur
ed acre. It was considered by all our
best farmera as being an extra yield.
Respectfully,
SWAMP' FARMER.”
AVc thank “Swamp Farmer” for
calling our attention to the state
ment made last week, as to the yield
of 14,000 pounds of Bermuda hay
from an acre, at a single cutting.
AVc did not intend to say “at a sin
gle cutting”, as such was not the
case. The yield was 14,640 pounds
during the year. The first cutting
was over 5 tons. Even this seems
incredible ; but, the land was accu
rately laid off by the County Survey
or, and three disinterested gentlemen
weighed the hay after it was cured,
and certified to the yield. There is
a bonanza in Bermuda grass, as is
being demonstrated by the Bibb
county farmer to whom “Swamp
Fanner” refers in his communica
tion.
THREE Tr'eIFmEEDS.
A prominent liquor dealer remark
ed to us the other day that Clarke
county needed three, things : A pro
hibition law, a dog law and the s'oek
law; that lie would vote to-morrow
to run whisky out of the country,
and believed that in lcs3 than two
years Georgia would he a strong
temperance state. Prohibition would
carry the day to-morrow, if left to a
vote of die people of Athens. Ban

PSOHIBiIIOS IN GEORGIA.
Savannali News; “The temper
ance movement iu Georgia is attract
ing attention in other states. D. K.
Locke, better Ldown as Petroleum
V, iSasbv, in a reeent letter to his
paper, the Toledo lllade, speaks of
the movement in the highest terms.
Iu this matter, he thinks that Geoi; a
is tar ahead of many of the states
whose newspapers and stump orators
take delight in criticising Georgia
civilization. vlr. Locke calls atten
tion to the fact that 05 of the 157
counties of the state have declared
for prohibition, and that they arc
well-nigh free from the liquor in
ti uence. lie predicts that the re
maining 42 counties will soon follow
the example of the prohibition coun
ties. With respect to the effect of
prohibition, he says that in the pro
hibition counties it has been startling.
Labor has improved 100 per cent,
and the condition of the laborers
1,000 per cent. Men who never
worked but a part of the week, now
put in six good days, and those who
spent their entire wages at the dog
geries, leaving their wives and chil-
dren to shift for themselves, are now
saving money, and are looking for
ward hopefully to the time when
they shall own land themselves;
something very easy to accomplish in
almost any part of Geargia.
“Prohibition appears to mean a
great deal more in Georgia than it
does in Maine. There is certainly
not so much parade made over it in the
Southern as in the Northern states.
Notwithstanding the vast amount of
temperance work that has been done
in Maine, the amount of intoxicating
i liquor sold within its borders is etior

metis, and now when it is proposed
to put a prohibition amendment in
the constitution, tiic ablest advocates
of temperance in the siate rise up and
oppose it, on tho ground that it can
not be enforced, because public sen
timent is not ripe for it. Georgia,
quietly and unostentatiously, and in
a comparatively short time, has done
more genuine temperance work than
Maine lias, although Maine has been
posing for years before the country
as a great temperance state. “

A foiv members of the Methodist
Church organized a Society to he
called, “The Methodist Union of
Greene County,” for the purpose cf
advancing the Master’s cause. This
is a movement of Methodists, but not
a Methodist movement, in a sectari

ment, and we wish to make it a
movement of all Christians in the
county. All of every Church arc
cordially invited to co-operate with
us for the salvation of our county —
united, we shall accomplish our
hoar, s desire; divided, we may fail.
Brethren and sisters! let us “lock
shields,” and in the name of the
“Lord of hosts” wage unrelenting
war on the Bowers of Darkness. —
Mi et with us Wednesday the 4th of
June, at 9 o’clock, a. m., at the
Methodist Church in Grcencsboro’,
ail ye that love Jesus, and are will
ing to work for Him. We could not
call our Society more than a Metho

not warrant it. May it develop into
a grand Christian Union. AVe care
nothing for names, we arc for saving
men. If the facts warrant, we can
easily change the name.
