An Imprudent Mca.sum
• The venous railroad authorities
of Macon liaVc lately established a
rule that bo one shall enter the pas
senger depot without a permit from
the marshal ill charge of the same.
This smacks of tyranny; and the main
{pood sought to be accomplished—
that of relieving pasaengers from an
noyance by hotel drummers —is ren
dered of no t fleet, for the reason (hat
the usttfl number of porteia are still
to be allowed to meet the trains.
We always thought tlic arrange
ments at the Macon depot were the
worst of any in the Stale, and now
the climax is capped by the above
absurd regulation. Atlanta has a
finer depot ami more travel than Ma
con, but has never found it necessary
to adopt such a rule. The Macon de
pot, so far us we know, is the only:;
ouc in Georgia which i* mt open to
the public at all hours. It, u ith its
massive Iron gates close*l three-fourth*
of the time, presents more the appear
ance of a jail, titan a gathering-place
lor traveler*.
Imagine one or two of the incon
veniences under the now system: A
passenger wishes to take a night
train. No matter iiow disagreeable
the weather, he must first fiud the
marshal, and buy a ticket, before he
can get in. Or, u passenger hue just
time to get on a train before it starts;
but having to hunt the marshal to
get a ticket, the train leave* him.
Or,a father wants to hid his daughter
farewell; but before he can get the
requisite pass, the cars have gone.
Pleasant, isn’t it?
At any rate, it will not lmvo a leu
denry to increase the flow of lra<k’
and travel towards Macon.

A Horrible Murder.
On Tuesday evening the s!!trllinir
intelligence was brought to Sheri If
Ayco:3c, at Homer, that Mrs. Kidd,
living near Athens, had Iccn missing
from her friend • for many hours, and
that snspt -ion of her death by vio
lem-o wo* entertnined. When last
Keen she had mounted on horse-bock
at live house of Mr. Allman, a neigh
bor whom she l ad been visiting, and
had started home about dusk. Short
ly afterward the horse rode was found
in a field a distance, of not more
than a half mile from where she
started, i Merles*.
Sitsp.eioii having aroused, it was
found npon inquiry that a negro
name 1 Henry Moore, living near A.
Ragland 4 * place, had had a quarrel
with bis wife that day nml whipped
her and as afterword started toward
Mr. Allman 4 * bouse. Iptm examina

struggle were found.
’1 Ire neighborhood thereupon turn
ed out in a mass, and it it was learned
on inquiry’ dint this negro had been
seen by black children ne;r Mr.
Moreland w alking by trio side of Mrs.
Kidd. It appeared to theiu as if she
wanted to apeak, but a threatening
motion ho made at her with his arm
prevented her.
The wood* nnd every portion of
tlu* country was scoured, though no
furthnainformnlion was obtained an
until dusk, when a party rode tip to
CaMwmri mills. At that point, hap
pening to mention that Henry Moore
wits the negro suspected, this negro
proved at the moment to be present
and immediately upon bearing the
remark, broke ami run. Ho was hotly
chased as far iih It. li. Kvens planta
tion, and had not, at Ins* accounts
been taken.
The (*laee where tho imforlunafe
lady was last aeon by Ibo children
was only a short distauco from Cal-
Initin null’s and search was immedi
ately directed thither.
Alter an examination of every
thicket and clump of trees the body
was finally found by Mr. t>. V. Glad
ney, of the Hmuor Drflg Store, and
others, from whom we gathered
these facts. The finding was about
n Ital fan hour by suit, and I lie victim
had evidently been compelled to ti e
sjiot where she had met death. Ju
tfie opinion o! those who had first
seen the corpse, the life hod not
quitted the body later tlmn at Biin
down. The death wounds were evi
dently made wi h sonic knot of weed
that canto conveniently to the hand
of the assassin and with which lie liud
fractured her skull.
The body was taken from the thick
jungle of woods in which it was
found and transported to the house
of her grief-stricken family in a
wagon.

During the war, a eitixe'i of Savan

large amount of cotton and stored
il in or near that city. When Savan
nah was taken possession of by the,
Fail hues, this cotton was tuki ft in the
name of the Government of the Uni
te l States, and cunliscnted. Before
and during the war Mr. McDaniel
was a man in affluent circumstance*,
lint, like thousands cf others, the
close of the war found him reduced
to poverty. Since then lie has died,
and hi* widow has been making her
own living by personal exertions.
She came to Uii* r’rty, where she fms
earned a support principally by her
needle, and has never murmured at
her lot.
My advice she was induced to put
in a claim at Washington for the cot
ton belonging to her husband. Tire
services of lawyers at the seat of
Government were procured to pr6se
euto the claim. Mrs. McDaniel did
not s"t down and wait tor the issue
of the suit, but as stated above, went
to work to earn an earnest living,
home days ago her lawyers at
Washington telegraphed for her to
come on and get the money, ns the
claims had been granted. She imme
diately repaired to that city, and on
yesterday, we learn, returned to At
lanta bringing $1)5,000,000 in green
backs.
