Death of a Worthy Colored
Man.—Mmnford Crook, aged about
05 years, and formerly a servant of
Major Osborn Crook, deceased, died
of measles, in Hamilton, on the 25th,
He was a blacksmith by trade, and
had worked liefe as such for 30 years.

lias again invaded our community
and taken from us one of our most
esteemed citizens, Mr. Ambrose Ilun
ly, who died of paralysis, at liis resi
dence, on the 21st, aged 07 years.
No one who knew Mr. 11. well but
will drop a tear upon hearing of his
his death. The event has produced
a saddening effect on our town.
The deceased had been a resident
of Harris county 86 years, and by his
honesty and integrity, perseverance
and energy', and close attention to
business, succeeded in rising above
the adversities of life.
In the year 1854 he joined the M.
E. Church, South, and has ever borne
an unblemished character,
lie leaves a family and a large num
ber of friends to mourn his loss.

Almost a Fire. —During the ab
sence at breakfast, last Tuesday, of
Mr. I.igon, who clerks at the store of
Messrs. Cowsert & Fitts, a stick of
wood rolled otit of llie fireplace, and
when Luke returned, he found the
room full of smoke, and the floor on
tire. It was soon put out. A little
later, and the house could not have
been saved, as a hole was burnt in
the floor, and a coal had dropped into
the cellar, amongst some rubbish.

Dillingslea, last week, was a mistake.
NVe resurrect him with pleasure, and
hope his “days maybe long in the
land.” A negro of that name had
died, and we suppose this caused our
informant to make the mistake.
The Good Templars held a
meeting last Friday night, and three
gentlemen of this town were admitted
to membership. This should be an
encouragement to others to do the
same. The Lodge meets every Fri
day night, nfthc Masonic Hall.
Miserable.— While we have not
had any extreme cold in several days,
the weather, in respects, has
been wretched— a variation between
hijib, bleak winds, and a deltfge of
