XSf We learn that one of our good
citizens took several of his children
to Columbus on Wednesday, and on
taking the train to return, he counted
them, and missed one. He started
out in a flurry to hunt it, and rejoiced
when lie was called back, and found
that he had made a miscount—that

Neglo Killed. —We learn that a
negro was killed last "Tuesday, near

picnic at Kingsboro on the 22d.
Letter from Alabama. r
Lafayette, Ala., Aug. 12, 1§73.
Ed. Visitor: —Please excuse me
for intruding upon your notice.
Thinking probably you would like
to hear a few words from this part of
the country in regard to crops, I will
write you a few lilies to that point.
The crops in Chambers are very
good, except bottom lauds, which
were drowned out in the spring. Up
lands that have beeu well worked,
are as good as the land will produce.
Prospects for cotton are superb. The
seasons, so far, exactly suit this fav
orite staple.
Potatoes and peas look well.
Our energetic farmers are already
making preparations for turning their
stubble early this fall. Such a
process would no doubt have a good
effect upon the much worn and ex
hausted lands of old Harris.
Our merchants complain of dull
trade, but they are cheered up occa
sionally with a picnic, and have good
prospects for a vigorous trade the
coming season.
I had the good luck, a few days
past,. to get hold of a copy of the
Visitor. I find it to be thoroughly
Democratic in principle, and devoted
to the glorious cause of a white man’s
government. Hamilton is always
proud of good things. I thiuk the
Visitor will be a welcome guest.
It is reasonable that Hamilton, so
distinguished for its fair women and
brave men, with the Visitor, North
and South railroad, mountain scen-
waler, pure, bracing atmos
phere, its genial and lovely clime, the
hospitality of its citizens, and other
attractions, all combined, should be
a place of popular resort.
The Visitor should he, as a medi
ciue, in every house, for fear of acci
dents. May it stand as firm as the
“ rock of ages”—always in the van
of the grand and glorious march of
Democracy! Long may it wave!
I must throw down my pen to
throw up my hat for the prosperity
of Hamilton. J. P. Z.

The Columbus Sun says gold
ore has been found in a mine near
Grantville, Meriwether county. Our
map places Grantville in Coweta
county.—Visitor.
A little too hypercritical, worthy
Visitor. We neither spoke of gold
ore having been recently “found” iD
the locality, nor did we say, that
Grantville 5 w asm MeriwetberCcrunty.
Our precise language was: “The ore
was from a mine near Grantvi.le, in
Meriwether county.” If the Visitor
will look a little closer at its “map,”
it will see that Grantville is very near
tire line dividing Meriwether and
Coweta; and if it will ask persons
who know T ANARUS, they will tell it that the
mine is in Meriwether, near Grant
ville, just as we said; also, that the
mine was. discovered several years
ago, — Co'mnbits Sun.
_ We neither said that the ore nor
the mine had been recently found;
and we were aware of the facts that
Grantville is near the line dividing
the two counties, and that the mine
is in Meriwether. If the Sun had
said “ the ore was from a in
Meriwether county, near 'Grantville,.”
instead of “ the ore was from a mine
near Grantville, in Meriwether coun
ty,” we should nothave mistaken its
meaning. In working a horse to a
vehicle, it makes all the difference in
the world whether you place him in
tjie front or rear.
The annual meeting of the
stockholders of the North and South
road was held in Columbus Wednes
day last. 11. C. Kimbrough, chair
man,. Wm- Redd, secretary.
Col. MoDotigald tendered his resig
nation.
A resolution was passed authoriz
ing the Directors to lease the Rome
end of the road.
The following Board of Directors
was elected; P. Freer, C. C. Me-
Gehce, T. E. Blanchard, W, A. Mc-
Dougald, W. D. Chipley, F. A. Frost,
T. McGuire.
We saw a negro man anil a
white woman riding through the
streets of Columbus in a boggy, a
few days ago, and were disgusted to
learn that they were man and wife.
Columbus received her first
bale of new cotton on the 11th. It
was from Henry county, Ala., classed
low middling, weighed 525 lbs., and
sold for 21 cents per pound.
John King is the name decided on
for the new engine on the North and
South road. ,
