Old-time Customs.
Prom the Southern Cultivator.
To the progressive, successful far
mer, there is no period in the year of
nbsohttot rest. One operation com
pleted, another springs up before
him. One crop made, another waits
to be started He keeps step to the
" ceaseless round ” of nature —no jar
rings, no clashings, no stagnating—
his movements are indefinitely varied,
but perfectly harmonious,
Just how, however, iu a Southern
farmer’s life, there is a period of com- :
parutive rest. 11 is corn and cotton J
crops have been laid by; the cease- j
less study on his part to make no i
false step, to make every “ lick tell,”
and to save his crop from grass, which,
during the months of May and June,
with great persistence and power as
serts its birthright to the soil —these
heavy draughts upon his brain hare
ceased. His laborers, too, after hard
and incessant work for many weeks,
may now be allowed to slacken their
gait and breathe more freely. In the
olden times it was customary to cel
ebrato the victory won, by a barbe
cue for the hands, and, in many local
ities, by social dinners and mutual
inspection of each other’s farms by
the farmers. For these good old
practices, broken up by fanatics, van
dals and thieves, we desire to enter
a plea. They were founded in true
wisdom, and should survive the
changes through which wo have
passed. Those who aro familiar with
the negro character, know how much
he appreciates little favors. He is
too much like a child to bo very
grateful. You may treat him well in
general, and pay him liberal wages—
these he will consider matters of right,
and will leave you at the ond of the
year to join one who tickles his imag
ination with big tales. But “ oeca
sious,” frolics, celebrations, etc., sink
deep in his heart and memory. In
olden times, how hard the negro
would work at a log rolling or corn
shucking, for drink of whisky and
the privilege of joining in the song
and the laugh. Asa matter of pol
icy, then, have a barbecue when your
cron is laid by; invite to it not only
the regular hands on yonr farm, but
auoh day laborers as you may have
employed, and who Lave behaved
well. Do not invite the trifling fol
lows about you, who would not work
with any regularity, but only at those
push of times," when extravagant
wages could be exacted. Leave them
*t in the coid—maybe they will do
better next year, A revival of the
eld-lime practices will not be con
strued by them into courting or pan
dering on your part, bnt be regarded
as evidence of a kind heart and of a
good man; and next Christmas you
will find Uneasy to make contraote
with them. We have the profound
eat contempt for the white mau who
brings himself down to the level of
the negro, and ofens the way to so-
cial equality. But as the negro is
almost oi)r Bole dependence for oora
mon laborers, it h neither wrong nor
beneath tbe self-respect of a gentle
man to control him by indirect ap
peals to peculiarities of his nature. It
implies neither taking advantage of
the negro, nor a lowering of the dig
nity of the employer, and it docs no
wrong to one’s neighbor.
The nexyhborhood club is another
of the good old institutions which
ought to be revived everywhere. So
cially considered, thay were delight
fhl; as a means of progress, as slim
ulanta to enterprise, energy and men
tal activity, they were beyond value.
They accomplished much more than
county and State societies. There
was no room for sham—for one rich
acre well cultivated to brag on, and
fifty acres |*oor and grassy, hardly
paying the expense of cuUira’don.
Their tendency was to stimulate oach
man to have his farm, including hou
ses, stock and crops, in such condi
tion that ho would be proud to have
them seen. Each one strove to be
equal with -the best farmer in the
neighborhood. An “esprit de corps”
was developed, and every one “ mag
nified ” his calling. Now is a fitting
time to revive these clubs—the busi
ness of the farm does not revuire the
eloae personal attention demanded
duripg the past four or five months,
and the mind seeks relaxation from
its long strain, in social interconrsc.
If a few in each settlement move in
the matter, others will very rapidly
be drawn in.

VEGETABLE
The startling drawback on nearly all me
dicinal agents has ever been that in their
process of purgation and purification they
have also deb'litated the system. To obviate
this difficulty physicians have long sought
for an agent that would purge, purifyand
strengthen at one and the same time. Their
research has at last been rewarded by a dis
covery which fuliy realizes the fondest desires
of the medical faculty, and which is justly
regarded as the most important triumph that
Pharmacy has ever achieved. This import
ant desideratum is Dr. Tutl’s Vegetable Liver
Pills, which purify the blood and remove all
corrupt humors and unhealthy accumulations
from the body, and yet produce no weakness
or lassitude whatever, but, on the contrary,
tone the stomach and invigorate the body
timing the progress of their operation. They
unite the heretofore irreconcilable qualities
of a strengthening purgative and a purifying
tonic. Dr. Tutt’s Pills are the most active
and searching medicine in existence. They
at once attack the very root of disease, and
their action is so prompt, that in an hour or
two after they are taken the patient is aware
of their good effects. They may be taken at
any time without restraint of diet or occupa
tion; they produce neither nausea, griping or
debility, and as a family medicine they have
no riVal. Price 25 cents a box. Sold by all
