■Should be Stopped. —Farmers are
constantly complaiuing that freei
men steal their corn, carry it to some
store, and either sell, or barter- it for
tobacco and whisky.
Hr. T. N. Sparks, living near Val
ley Plains, states that a short time
ago, while absent in Columbus, a ne
gro drew the staple from his crib,
took out some two bushels of corn,
and sold it at a neighboring store.
If merchants would have a few of
these thieves arrested, there would
be less stolen goods offered for sale.
N. &S. It. R.—We are very glad
to see that Dr. Fie wt lien lms rescued
the elegant passenger coach, Tiny,
from the mnd. It is now on the
track at the North and South depot,
and will soon be put in order.
The people of Harris never fully
appreciated the railrodd until the
break. Some who subscribed largely.
sy they had rather lose it all than
be without the road.
Unusual. —Mr. H. C. Kimbrongh
sends us an Irish potato plant with
ftuit growing on the limbs, and not
under ground, as is usual. The pota
toes, of which there are six or seven,
are of a greenish cast, and althongh
young, are as large as bird’s eggs,
and promised to be as large as those
that grow upon the roots. He has

The question for to-night is, Which

politics or literature ?
Johnson and Stanford to lead in
the negative; Blount and Jenkins in
the affirmative.
The name ofj. S. McC'ants
was inadvertently omitted from the
muster-roll of the “ Mountain Tigers,”
which we published last week. We
make this notice, as the Doctor was
too good a soldier to have his name
omitted from the company—having
served faithfully therein during the
entire war.
Pzbsonal —Dr. T. L. Jenkins has
returned home from Atlanta, where
he went last week to attend the
Dental Convention, and is again
ready to devote his time and atten
tion to the good work of putting and
keeping in order the molars of our
fellow-citizens.

This den Sen Of the HWry world
certainly does not ekpect Ms V 6 in
dorse his communistic anfi incestuous
dogmas. Perhaps be has selected
this subject that, Sike Jean Jacques
Rousseau (whom beseems to admire),
“all the journals might ring the
alarum bells,” and thereby secure a
large sale for his book.
To those who have not seen this
grandiloquent effusion, we will say
that the author takes especial pains
to show his dear (?) readers that he
has burnt the “ midnight taper,” and
to introduce them to quite a number
of characters, whom he drops quite
as suddenly as he introduces them.
He also mentions several parties who
are now living. This we think ex
ceedingly bad taste in a novelist;
more especially since he calls them
by their real names. .
Mr. TANARUS., however, has the consola
tion of knowing that Lord Byron
said, “ A book’s a book, although
there’s nothing in’t.” He must also
remember what Mr. Denham said:
‘ ‘Books should to one of these four ends con
duce:
For wisdom, piety, de’ight ot use.”
The book is very neatly gotten up.
On one side, in cabalistic letters, is
its name. If the publishers had placed
just below this the letters A, V. H.
R. D., we think it would be com
plete.
83F” Boully doesn’t like it because,
he saw a man driving an ox, a mule
and a milch cow hitched to a wagon.
He objects on the cow’s account, say
ing that “it is enough that cow’s
should give us cream and butter.”
And then he adds with charming nai
vete that, “judging from appearances,
this on@ was doing her duty in that
respect.”
If Waterman, of the La Grange
Reporter, will take the trouble to
look at the head of the column from
which he obtained the above, he will
see that he has taken the wrong man
to task with his ironic innendoes.
85F” The Rome Courier says:
“ Willi.'im Dugas Trammell, the Geor
gia Communist, is writing a few
scorching epistles to Georgia editors
for intimating that he is crazy.
William Dngas will certainly have
his hands full if he attempts to re
spond with hostile intent to all inti
mations of the sort. There seems
to be a general public sentiment hi
that direction in regard to the young
man, which we announce, in advance,
we do not share.
Good Coffee. —Who does not like
good coffee? Mr. Storey has given
us a sample of some that he sells at
three pounds to the dollar, and it is a
capital article. It is free from trash,
and those who have used it—partic
ularly old housekeepers—are loud
in its praise. They say they like it
better than any they’ve bought since
the war, Mr. S. has also a good ar
ticle of coffee which he is selling at
thirty cents a pound.
New Enterprise. —A gentleman
of Columbus has bought a grass farm
of 2,000 acres in Florida, and is going
to raise geese, ne has ordered about
1,500 head from Kentucky.
Mr. John L. Peartie, of Palatka,
has been employed to superintend.
Won’t they coin the greenbacks,
though ?
The Florence. —Persons needing
a good sewing machine, are referred
to the advertisement of the Florence.
The price has been reduced thirty
per cent —thus placing them- within
the reach of those who are unable to
buy a more costly machine.
