Domestic Recipes.
Marble Cakes. —For the White
Cake. —Whiles o? five egg*, one and
n half cuj>3 of white sugar, one-half
cup of butter, one cup of milk, two
cops of flour, half a teaspoonful of
soda, one teaspoonful of cream of tar
tar; flavor with lemon.
For the Dark Cake. —Yolks of
five eggs, one and a half cups of
brown sugar, one-half cup of butter,
one cap of milk, two cups of flour,
half a teaspoonful of soda, one tea
spoonful of cream of tartar, two
tcaspoonfuls of cinnamon. Pnt in
pans, first a layer of dark cake, then
a layer of white, and so on, finishing
with a layer of dark. Bake in a
moderate oven.
Blackberry Wink. —Put the ber
ries in a large tub; to every gallon
of berries pour on one pint of boiling
water. Bruise them with a mallet,
and let them remain until next day.
Strain through a thick cloth. To
every gallon of juice add two and a
half pounds of sugar. Drain again
and put into a cask; cover the bung
with muslin; pnt in a cool place.
Shake the cask daily until fermenta
tion ceases; cork it tight, and by
September it will be ready for use,
but improves with age. This recipe
has been followed for ten ycar,s and
never failed.
Blackberry Cordial.—Two quarts
of juice; ouo ppund of white sugar,
half ounce each of ground cinnamon,
nutmeg, cloves and allspice. Boil
the ingredients for a short time.
When cold; add a pint of brandy.
This cordial is said to be almost a
specific for summer complaint or
diarrhoea.
Camphor Icb. —Half ounce of
white wax, half ounce of sweet oil,
half ounce gum camphor; simmer to
gether ; cork tightly.
Blackberry Win*, No. 2.—Meas
ure your berries and bruise them; to
every gallon of berries add one quart
of boiling water. Let the mixture
stand twenty-four hours, stirring
occasionally; then strain off the liq
uor into a cask; to every gallon add
two pounds of sugar; cork tight,
and let it stand to the following Oc
tober, and the wine is ready for use.
Whitewash.— Fill a barrel about
half ftill of water, then put in ono
bushel of fresh, unslaoked lime; add
more water when thoroughly slacked;
drain through a fine sieve, then add
ten pounds Spanish whitening, seven
teen pounds common salt, and twelve
pounds cheap sugar, and it is ready
for use. It makes a whitewash al
most equal to paint, and will not rub
off. We have used the above, and
can recommend it.
To Clean Blankets.— The Bos-
ton Journal of Chemistry gives the
following method of. cleansing blank
ets: Put two large teaspoonfuls of
borax and a pint bowl of soft soap
into a tub of cold water. When dis
solved, put in a pair of blankets, and
let them remain over night. Next
day rub on*, and rinse thoroughly
in two waters, and hang them to
dry. Do not wring them. But this
is not the only domestic use to which
borax may be put. Borax is the best
cockroach exterminator yet discov
ered* This insect has a peculiar
aversion to it. As the salt is per
fectly harmless to human beings, it is
much preferred for this purpose to
the poisonous substances commonly
used. Borax is valuable for the
laundry; use one pound to about ten
gallons of boiling water, and you need
only about one-half the ordinary al
lowance of soap. For laces, oambrios,
eto., use an extra quantity of this pow
der. It will not injure the texture
of the cloth in the least. For cleans
ing the hair, nothing is better than a
solution of borax water. Wash after
wards with pure water, if it leaves
the hair too stiff. Borax dissolved
in water is an exoellent dentifrice,
or tooth-wash.
Blackbkbry Jiut.—Put tbe fruit
into jar, tio paper over it, add atew
in a saucepan of boiling water, or by
putting the jar into the oven; strain
off tbe liquor, and to evory pint of
jnioe add a pint of loaf sugar; put all
into a preserring-pan, simmer* and
akiui it When it will jelly upon a
plate, it ia fit to be put into jSra for
use,

STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE
THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
Over 800,000 in use.
If yon think of buying a Sewing Machine,
ft will pay you to examine the records of
those now use, and profit by experience.
The Wheeler & Wilson stands alone as
the only Light Running Machine using the
Rotary Hook, making a Lock Stitch alike on
both sides of the fabric sewed. All shuttle
machines waste power in drawing the shuttle
back after the stitch is formed, bringing dou
ble wear and strain upon both machine and
operator; hence, while other machines rap
idly wear out, the Wheeler & Wilson lasts
a Lifetime, and proves an economical invest
ment. Do not believe all that is promised
by so-called ‘ cheap’ machines: you should
require proof that years of use have tested
their value. Money once thrown away can
not be recovered.

treatment, a purgative, exerting a
powerful influence upon these vari
ous organs, is essentially necessary.
There is no cathartic for the purpose
equal to Dr. J. Walker’s Vinegar

the dark-colored viscid matter with which
the bowels are loaded, at tho same time
stimulating tho secretions of the liver,
and generally restoring the healthy func
