Deaths. —On the night of the 28th
Mrs. Samuel Pitts, of this county, re
tired in as good health as usual. At
an early hour next morning she was
found dead in her bed. Her position
was perfectly natural, and her face
bore no marks of her having suffered
any pain—showing that the God she
loved was good to her even unto the
end, by taking her to Himself while
wrapped in quiet slumber. She was
in her 73d year.
Bev. John Harris died in this couit

the greater part of his life to the
cause of religion. •
Thief Caught.—Some time last
December, Mr. Sam. Teel, living over
the mountain,' bad a horse stolen.
During the late colored Baptist As
sociation at this place, Levi Good
man, a negro who formerly lived near
Mr. Teel, was asked where he got
the mule he had, and said he traded
a horse for it.
Mr. Teel went at once to Chatta
hoochee county, where the negro is
living, and found his horse.
Lsvi was caught, brought here,
tried before Justice Williams, and, in
default of bail, committed to jail. He

Talbotton, Ga., Aug. 27, 1874.
Hon. T Ym. 7. Hudson:
Sir fhe convention called for this
(the 25th) senatorial district assem
bled at this place to day, and nomi
nated you for the senate. We were
appointed to notify you pf your unan
imous nomination, and ask your ac
ceptance of the same.
Yours, truly,
J. W. Murphey.
J. T. Willis.
Dr. Herrins.
Hamilton, Ga., Aug. 29, 1874.
Messrs. J. W. Murphey , J. T. Willis,
and Dr. Herring , Committee:
Gentlemen —l have your commu
nication of the 27th, informing me
that I had been nominated by the
convention which assembled that day
in Talbotton, as the democratic can
didate in this (the 25th) senatorial
district for a seat iu the next senate.
I accept the nomination with a
sense of the responsibility which it
imposes. We enter the most im
portant canvass, in my opinion, since
the war. We have to contend with
a party not satisfied with the subver
sion of the constitution and rights of
the States, but which proposes to
pervert the purposes of the Creator.
Believing that the success of the
democratic party is the only sure way
to peace, prosperity and self-govern
ment, I enter the canvass with an
abiding confidence of success.
Your obdt. servt.,
Wm. I. Hudson.

Bad Conduct. —We have had sev
eral to complain to us that their little
girls have been insulted by pupils of
the colored school. We also have it
from good authority that the little
girls, while on their way from school,
have several times been forced to
leave the side-walk, -to give room for
a crowd of these colored children,
marching arm-in-arm to prevent any
one from passing between them.
They givo as an excuse, that the
white boys committed the first offence
in the same way. Suppose they
did; is that any excuse for insulting
little girls ?
We do not wish to be understood
as upholding tho while boys—far
from it. If they do not know how
to be polite upon the street, they
should be made to know.
The frequent troubles between the
races should be a warniug to white
and black.
Negro Killed. —A negro, whose
name we could not learn, living near
Nance’s, caught another named Sid,
formerly owned by Mr. H. C. Kim
brough, of this place, stealing his
corn, a few days since. He took
lnm in charge, and, taking his gun,
started with him for the nearest law
officer. After going a few steps, Sid
turned on him, took his gun away,
and beat him over the head so se
verely, that he died from the wounds
a few days afterwards. Sid was
arrested.
To Tax Payers. —Our Harris
county readers are referred' to the
notice of the collector, in to-days
paper. There is a considerable in
crease in the tax over last year.
The State tax for the present year is
five dollars on the thousand, and the
county commissioners have assessed
one hundred per cent on the State
tax, or five dollars on the thousand.
This makes a total property tax of
ten dollars, against eight last year.
