CubS fob Boils. —Dr. Simon, a
physician of Loraine, states that, aa
soon aa the Characteristic culminating
point of a boil makes its appearance,
be puts in a saucer a thimbleful of
camphorated alcohol, and, dipping
the ends of his middle fingers into
the liquid, rubs the inflamed surface,
especially the middle portion, repeat
ing the operation eight or ten times,
continuing the rubbing at each time
for about half a minute, lie then al
lows the surface to dry, placing a
slight coating of camphorated olive
oil over the affected surface. He
'states that one such application in al
most all such cases, causes boils to
dry up and disappear. The applica
tion should be made at morning,
noon and in the evening. He avers
that the same treatment will cure
whitlows, and all injuries of tips of
fingers. As soon as pain and redness
appear, the finger should be soaked
for ten minutes in camphorated sweet
oil. The relief is said to be immedi
ate, and three applications are gener
ally enough to effect a cure.
A Substitute fob Ice.—lt is prob
able that many good housewives do
not know that butter may be kept
firm and nice-looking by merely in
verting oyer it a flower-pot covered
with damp cloths. In the same way
a water-pitcher enveloped in wet
cloths will keep its contents cool and
grateful to the parched throat this
hot weather.
On a large scale the same plan
may be used in the fields. The con
tents of a barrel enveloped in cloths
which are kept constantly wet, will
he so pleasant aa almost to induoe
the laborer in the field to drink more
than is good for him.
The reason why water kept this
way is eool is, that the evaporation
of the outside dampness carries off
the heat from the inside—just as per
spiration carries off the heat from the
human frame, and renders a live man
capable of withstanding a heat which
will cook beefsteak.
Smut Preventive.— A corrsspon
dont of the Western Rural says:
“ Farmers that hare smutty wheat
should not sow such wheat without
picking it.
To prepare seed wheat for sowing:
Make a weak brine, or, better jet,
have urine kept in an out of the waj
plaoe to wot the seed. One gallon
of brine will be sufficient for each
bushel of wheat. The brine should
not be too strong. I prefer the urine,
beoause it giros more rigor to the
young wheat plant.
'While wetting the seed, shorel the
pile from side to side until every
kernel of wheat is wet. Then add
slaked lime, one bushel for eaoh ten
bushels of wheat. Seed wheat should
be prepared iu the evening for tho
next day’s sowing. In the morning
before bagging the seed, wet the pile
with water and shovel the pile until
the limo adheres to the wheat. This
prevents dust while lowing.”
Remedy fob Insect Stings.— M.
Dauverne says that 30 or 40 grains
of quick-lime dissolved in water is a
thorough remedy for the stings of in
sects, and far superior to ammonia
cr other alkali.
Cobn Fob Hogs.— The Southern
Planter advises those who have not
yet planted thoir corn, to leave a por
tion of their crop only partly thinned,
to be out up and fed whole to the
hogs, stalk and all, as soon as they
have gleaned the harvest fields. It
fattens the hogs in summer, saves
corn, and is cheaper and better than
root crops, Mr. Ruffin states that
he has tried it for eleven years, and
never regretted ih
Trichinae in I loos.—The Ameri
can Agriculturist says a hog may
have sixty million trichina) in ite
muscles and give no evidence of the
disease in ite life; unless long affected,
when it becomes stiff, and on dose
inspection with a good naked eye,
little white specks, (cysts) may be
teen in the skin. These contain tho
parasites which require a microscope
to be recognised and examined. All
such infected meat should be made
into soup, and not eaten; and care is
needed to cook bacon and all pig
meat at the heat of boiling water to
kill these enemies.

If you think of buying a Sewing Machine,
it will pay you to examine the records of
those now use, and profit by experience.
The Wheeler & Wilson stands alone as
the only Light Running Machine using the
Rotary Hook, making a Lock Stitch alike on
both sides of the fabric sewed. All shuttle
machines waste power in drawing the shuttle
DAck after the stitch is formed, bringing dou
ble wear and strain upon both machine and
operator; hence, while other machines rap
idly wear out, the Wheeler & Wilson lasts
a Lifetime, and proves an economical invest

by so-called ‘cheap’ machines: you should
require proof that years of use have tested
their value. Money once thrown away can
not be recovered.

treatment, a purgative, exerting a
powerful influence upon these vari

There is no cathartic for the purpose
equal to Dr. J. Walker’s Vinegar

the dark-colored viscid matter with which
the bowels aro loaded, at the saino time
stimulating tho secretions of the liver,
