tetter from Ceres of the State
Grange.
White Bluet, Ga., Sept. 14,1874.
Editors Herald and Georgian :
It is very gratifying to me to find
that the resolution I introduced at
the January meeting of the State
Grange, known as the “Calico Reso
lution,” and passed in such compli
mentary terms, has excited so much
fttterest that a slight variation in a
portion of my drees, at the Co-opera
tive Feast on the third instant, in
wearing a cheap skirt of two sum
mers’ use, was noticed by some of
my sisters. This, to my mind, is con
clusive proof that the resolution has
impressed the sisterhood, and I trust
is resulting in great good. For the
future, my sisters, I shall strive to
avoid even the appearance of a viola
tion of what I commended so ear
nestly to others. I will take occasion
to say just here, however, that the
resolution did not contemplate the
discarding of dresses already pur
chased—as there would be no econ
omy in that—bat the quality of goods
to be bought for our own use in the
future.
In attending Grange meetings in
various parts of the State, and adher
ing so strictly to calico in my dress,
many sisters have often apologized
for not doing the same. Sisters, let
us be in earnest in economizing.
Tho times demand it. The depressed
condition of our section demands it.
Yes, all the surroundings demand it,
and I intend adhering strictly to the
resolution; wearing only calico, and
using my little influenco in making it
tho leading dress among the matrons
in Georgia. Sisters, our fall pur
chases are near at hand. Let us not
be tempted to deviate in the least
from the rule of economy we have
adopted. Remember our distressed
country, and make your purchases
conform strictly to your necessities.
Let tho world see and know that
we are what we profess—matrons in
deed, and not unworthy co laborers
w ith our struggling husbands, fath
ers and brothers. I.et us by exam
ple and every influence wo can com
mend be true to the necessities of
the times, making economy our watch
word.
It is gratifying to mo to hear from
a prominent Patron that the resolu
tion in question had saved him two
hundred dollars at least. Suppose
out of the large number of Granges
in Georgia every family had saved as
much in propor’ ja to the size of the
same, what an immense amount of
money would have remained in the
pockets ©f our husbands, brothers,
eto.
Our order, composed as it is of only
the tillers of the soil, producing cot
ton as the monied staple crop, making
its consumption of momentous impor
tance, we should interest ourselves
in lending our influence in that direc
tion. Our adopting prints as our
dress is not only important in poiut
of eoonomy, but the consumption of
cotton in laudable, for the price of all
commodities much depends upon the
consumption thereof. So the double
advantage accomplished, my Bisters,
will induce us to adhere strictly to
the resolution in question.
Sisters, let the next meeting of tho
State Grange, on the 8d Wednesday
in January, 1875, bo long remem
bered for tho display thero made by
our sisters in calioo. Yours fralor
nally,
Mbs T. J. Smith,
Ceres of Gn. State Grange.
Sultuub bob Fecit.— A very in
telligent fruit grower, noticiug that
grapes always seemed to flourish on
soils of volcauio origin, assumed it
was attributable to the sulphur pres
ent, and determined to try that sub
stanoe as a fertiliser for them, which
he did with very satisfactory results.
Knoouraged by this he made a mix
ture of lime, salt and sulphur, and
applied it to his peach trees with a
surprisingly good effect.

years been a steady advance in the
consumption ol cotton by southern
manufacturers. A few years after
the war it was estimated at 80,000; it
