FARM AND HOUSEHOLD.
What Snow I>oe» for the Soil.
The question undoubtedly arise*
in the minds of many persons, ‘’What
w the effect of snow upon the soil,
ami upon vegetables?" It “wrap*
the eaith in a fleecy mantle,’’ aud,
like a mantle it keeps it warm.
It prevents the radiation of the
beat accumulated in the earth.
When it falls upon ground but
slightly frozen, and remains, the
ground continue* unfrozen, thus
preventing the injury to the roots
of the grasse*, grains, bulbs and
trees.
When the snow falls in November
as it usually does iu Canada, before
the ground is frozen to any con
siderable depth, the bulbs of the dah
lias and even the potatoes remain
unijured, and germinate in the
spring. In Massachusetts, the
ground becomes so deeply frozen
before the snow lies permanently I
upon it, that all such roots
are usually destroyed. When the
snow comes early and remains
through the winter, the rools of the
grain and grass remain green and
succulent, arid are ready lot au early
start in the Spring.
The snow also protects the suiface j
from sweeping winds, which dry it,
and remove the soil from the roots 1
of the Winter grain When the
snow lies in a deep body upon the
ground, if we have occasion to dig
into the earth, we find there is little
or no frost. People say tho snow
has taken the frost out of the ground.
This is not exactly true. The snow
lias protected the ground from the
cold air, and the heat radiating from
the earth has melted what frost
there was under the snow.
The white color of snow prevents
the absorption of tbe sun’s rays and
their Iran-mission to the ground, so
that the alternate thawing and freez
ing does not take place in a snow
covered surface which floes in one
on which the snow does not lie.
It is often said the snow is the poor
man's manure. But it is the rich
man’s a» we 1 !, for it brings dowu
elements of fertility from the atmos
phere, and retains them, and when
it melts conveys them into the soil.
When the snow is converted into wa
ter by the genial influence of thesun's
rays, it penetrates the soil so quietly
that it does not displace the seeds, or
disturb the rootlets of the plants, but
softens and swells them, and at the
same time dissolves the elements
of nutrition around them, which they
are thus enabled to absorb into their
circulating vessels and convey* to
their teuder shoots and buds.
Thus a good Providence supplies
its with the means of life and com
fort. It sends the snow to retain
the warmth of the earth, and protect
all vegetable life. Without it, in the
higher la'itudes, the earth could not'
he inhabited by man. The ground
would freeze to such a depth that it
would not be thawed till mid-summer.
We would raise no Winter grains,
and the short seasons would limit
our cultivation to a few of the hardier
plants.
The snow, then, is not only “»
beauty and a joy,” but it is a safe
guard aud protection to all vegeia- j
hie life. It adds largely to the fer- 1
tilily and productseness of the soil, l
and enables it to produce a much
greater variety and abundance of
crops for the supply of man, and the
cherished animals which contribute
so largely to his necessities and com
forts, than it would otherwise do.—

Has Corn should have its first
working as soon as the cotton is in,
if not before, then go back to the
cotton and give it the first working,
Hun close to the corn with a small
plough, or ti e the cultivator with the
front tooth out, and the frame con
tracted so that the first two side
teeth shall run close to the corn, your
double team straddling the row. Mr.
Minter’s new cultivator would do the
work admirably where the soil does
not need deep stirring You may go
deep if you like, or the land requires
it, for if the corn he young, as it
should he, there will be no danger of
breaking roots.
Lime Water for Fowls. —Lime
water, ns an occasional drink for
fowls, is »aid to be a prevenative of
many diseases, and assist* the forma
tion of bone and eggs. It should
l>* prepared as follows: Pour over
quick lime some water, and when
the lime is slacked and settled, draw
the clear water off, which can be
kept for a considerable time.
To Mash Potatoes —Boil the
potatoes thoroughly, peel them, and
break them to paste; then to every
two |»ounds of potatoes add a quarter
of a pint of milk, a little salt, and two
ounces of butter, and stir all well
over the fire. Either serve them
thus or place them ou the dish in a
form, or in scallops, then brown with
• salamander.
Grape vines will throw out
extra shoots and suckers, which
should be rubbed off at once. Young
peach trees should be looked after
for the same purpose. Mulch newly
planted trees and vines to keep the
ground moist about the roots. This
is better than watering.
jLg- Strawberry beds must be
kept free from runners, if you desire
fruit rather tbau an increase of plants.
It is better to cut than to pull them
off.

“I shall see what labor will do

Labor will turn up something.
