FARM AND HOUSEHOLD.
liaising Tomatoes from tlio
Cuttings.
We recently saw Route very
good, strong tomato plants raised
from cuttings from last year’s vines
and they were very strong and
vigorous plants, much more so
than those raised from seed.
Those we saw were at the gar
dens of an amateur florist and
cultivator, who ha? done much ex
cellent practice himself, Jackson
l-ewis, Esq.. of San Jose.
Wc recently read the communi
cation nf 1\ K. Bucks to the (’a
nadian Farmer upon this subject,
lie says: “There is tio doubt iti
my mind, from practical experi
ence, that cuttings taken from the
plants in Autumn, just before
freezing up time, stuck in damp
soil, and when well rooted removed
to nix teen inch pots, kept in an
atmosphere of forty to fifty de
grees, and w atered just sufficiently
to keep them alive din ing Winter,
and by keeping the shoots ns they
appear properly pinched,and a part
off the larger leaves, so its to re
tard growth as much as possible,
is the true way of ohtai ing the
earliest fruit. It, will l found
that if the plants are well attend
ed to, by the Spring they will be
thick nmi strong at the base, arid
as woody almost as a wall flower,
(•rowing tomatoes, as almost all
gardeners do, in hot-beds, is de
cidedly tho wrong method as im
doubt many of them have found
out. The hot bed plants are weak
ami spindling. Many put down
seeds in this way so early that the
plants run up to the glass before
the weather becomes sufficiently
warm to put them out in the open
ground, and the leaves either j
scorch or become frost bitten. I
have seen many a Irame of toma
toes for which I would not give
five cents for the best live hundred
plants in them.”
We hope, with our genial clime,
our gardeners will try this | lan ;
we feel sine it will succeed. Cal
ifornia Farmer.
Fastening Loose Window Sash
es.— 1 lie most convenient way to
prevent loose window sashes from
tattling unpleasantly when the
wind blows, is to mu..e f •r.r one
sided buttons of wood, and screw
them to the stops which arc nailed
to the face-casings of the window,
making each button of proper
length to press the side of the sash
outwtnds wilt'll the end of the but
ton is turned down horizontally.
The buttons operate like a earn.
By having them of ihe correct
length to i r >wd the stiles of the.
sash outwards against the out r
stop of the window frame, the sash
will bo held so firmly that it can
not rattle, but the crack w hich ; d
tniitt-d dust and a cm tent of cold
air will Ire closed so tightly that
no w indow straps will he required
The button** should l>c placed
about half-way IVom the upper to
the lower end of each stile of the
naslics.
Vi oktaiii.k Soit Peel and slice
six onions, six tomatoes, six car
rots and six tin nips, (the number
to be increased or diminished no
cording to the size of the family).
Fry them in half a pound ol but
ter. and pour on them four quarts
of boiling water. Toast a piece of
light bread as brown and as hard
sis possible, but do not burn it.—
Put that, some celery, sweet
herbs, white pepper and salt to the
above. Stew tho whole gently for
four hours, then strain through a
coarse cloth. Have ready sliced
tomatoes, celery and a little turnip
aud stew till tender in the soup.
This will be found to be a deli
cious soup for summer.
Insect I. in:. —Some one says:
“Insects generally’ must lead a
truly jovial life. 'Honk what it
must be to lodge in a lily. Imag
ine a palace of ivory or pearl, with
pillars of silver and capitals of
gold, .-ill exhaling such a perfume
as never rose from human censer.
Fancy again, the fun ot tucking
yourself up for the night in the
folds «il a rose, rocked to sleep by
the gentle sighs of a sumim i’w ait ;
and nothing to do when you aw*ike
but to wash yourself in a dew
drop and fall to and eat your bed
clothes 1“
Tomato Catsciv— Moil half a
bushel of peeled tomatoes and
seven or eight large onions until
perfectly tender, taking care to
stir them constantly to prevent
their burnimr. Strain through a
line seive. Then add one quart of
good vinegar, one cup full of salt,
two ounces ol black popper, one
ounce of cayenne, one ounce of
cloves and two pounds of sugar.
Boil until thick enough aud put
away in bottles.
Lime For Fkiit Trees. — It is a
good plau for fruit growers to ap
ply lime freely in their orchards
every two or throe years. A half
bushel to each tree,or one hundred
bushels broadcast to each acre,
will stiflioe. Light, loamy lands
will bo the best benefited l>y tho
lime, ami shell lime is better for
fruit than tho usual stone lime.—
