f ARM AND HOUSEHOLD^
From tbc Rural Curolinian.
Thoughts and Suggestions
for the Month.
Making crops is not all of the
farmer's life, or should not he a!!
The body must he fed and clothed
the*refqre we must make corn ami
ci tton C l . hut the *mind and the
d earl should be improved as well
as the soil, or our existence will
lie* barren, and no mental harvest
be garnered v\ ith its autumn days.
X,,w is a good time to think ol
til's, anil to ask ourselves if wc
; ,iv U '\i gsufHcient attention to
1 lie'higlier ends of our being.—
i\ cause one cultivates the ground,
he need not grovel. 11 is posi.
’ion is a proud one, and his
ihaiaeler and attainments should
ijpncspond. lie should be educa«
ted, refined, polite, nj right and
lioiiorable; and every means of
intellectual, social and moral cul
ture within his reach should lx;
laid hold of, and made subservient
tu his elevation in the scale of
Christian civilization. No farmer’s
house should be without hooks,
- cmspapers and magazines, and
his iending, though it should om
iiiace agriculture, should not be
fined to that; and he should
; to vide for the mental as well as
■.he physical sustenance of his
ti.eniy. Now, also, is the time to
i'. . . 1 . farmers’ clubs and (Irart
,u« s, a,.d to perfect the workings
~f (! ■*: ■' aii eady in existence, so
get all the good out of them
1 wh > h tl. -\ are capable.
'.bit w* • the agriculturist should
; v« • i i If leisure, at tiiis season
■ 1’ Ih year, for reading, study
• vial recreation, he must not
fir- a moment entertain the idea
it ho has time for idleness or
aim! ss lounging about the country
store i i tavern. In our delightful
climate, the wilder furnishes the
proper time for doing much of the
heaviest work of the plantation
or farm Fence building, stmnp
puiling, el itching, and tl te general
clearing up, of which there is al
ways enough to be dune, should
be pushed energetically, so as not
to stand in the way of the next
season's crops. Above all, the
fences must not be neglected. Some
of the worst annoyances and
heaviest losses to which’the farmer
is .subjected result from inadequate
fillies; and, later fin the season,
wii a other work will press, it will
beJvery difficult to give than the
attention they requite.
The wise farmer will not delay
making his labor contracts for
the next season, till the last mo
meat. It is well, ns far as possi
ble. io keep the same bunds from
year to year, where they have con
dttited themselves p. opcrly. New
bands will need some special traili
ng to adapt them to any peculiar*
i ies of management or working
that yiu may have instituted.
I'be profits of farming should
eon sis*, in a large measure, in the
improvement of the farm itself
and its belongings, and there cun
tie no better investment than this.
That is very* poor farming, if wor
thy to be called farming, which,
though it may nominally show a
cash balance, leaves the homestead
in a worse it,stead of abetter eoudi.
tion than it found it.
For Curing Meat.— Tho follow
ing is said to be an excellent ro
c pt, and if properly tried will
i.e\ er be abandoned :
To one gallon of water, add one
lueiPa half pounds of salt, half a
. ouud of sugar, half an ounce of
saltpeter, half an ounce of potaali.
In this ratio the pickle lobe in

Let those be boiled together until
all the dirt from the sugar rises to
the top and is skimmed o(T. Then
d-sow it into a tnl) to cool, and
when cold pour it over youi beef

Jv a t, iw days after killing, during
v-rich time it should be slightly

and clean.
