Card of Thanks
We desire to return our most

such marked kindness and hospi

hearts and hands, sending in o'

pantry to smile with plenty. This

day of o r arriva , which was ihe
diy before Christ mas, we
were greeted with many baskets
laden with the best the confect

tue rarest and richest the market

good things were seen coming in
from every direction. On new
years day the same spirit of kind
ness was manifested. An abund

mention, from the closet,
granary, smoke home, poultry
yard, thiiv, many loads of wood
etc., Suffice it to say, a grand dis
play of a benevolent spirit. Cer

thu k(givings at such tokens of
appreciation*. It nerves our
hearts and strengthens om hands
for preaching the glorious gospel
of Cl list to a w orld lying in ein

brethren in Christ, we tender our
warmest thanks, and pray that
t o bread that they have so gerer

at the Markham, getting out of
money he drew a Check on his
father for 9100, paid S4O to the
Hotel, and retained the Iml nee
in cash. Ttie check was returned

of his arrest.
Marshal Adair had himin charge
until bed-time and at Bensons re

rather than put him inpiison. lb
seemed cheerful and played card i
until bed-time when he and the
Marshal went, to bed in the same
room but in different beds.
Next morning a litide after day
the marshal was aroused by bear
ing a struggling noise at Bensons
bed. tie hurried to l iiu aud found
him s' ot and struggling in death.
Adair wen* down stairs after Mr.
Bates but when they returned he
was dead. He had shot himself
with a small pistol. The suicide
was carefuly planue 1. /'lie [list ot
had evidently been held against
his left breast just over the heart
and fired, /lie powder burning his
undershirt. Adair didn’t even
hear the report, the pistol being
covered by the bed clothing and
it is supposed the report woke
hitr.
The pistol belonged to N B
Bates and had Leen taken from
his room several days before, show
ing ttiat he had prepared for the
worst.
It Aetna that he was something
of a gay Lothario, at a number o !
letters from young ladies wen

Mr. Herring telegraphed the
house, with which Benson former
